Al Nahyan’s practice is based on foraging — materials she collects on her walks through her family farm and elsewhere\, are accentuated in the shapes they leave behind after being subjected to bleach and vinegar. Nadine Khalil\, who curates the exhibition\, describes Al Nahyan as “an artist who lets the natural world take the lead in her process of mark-making … She is interested in how a landscape can hold memories and renders this thought in subtle\, abstract works that represent both zoomed-out and magnified perspectives”. \n

DESCRIPTION:Efie Gallery continues its commendable promotion of artists of African origin with this group show featuring María Magdalena Campos-Pons\, ahead of her debut solo exhibition in the Middle East at Efie in April\, alongside works by JK Bruce-Vanderpuije\, Dina Nur Satti and Myles Igwebuike. The gallery says the exhibition “offers a nuanced exploration of the symbolic and performative dimensions within contemporary African art\, focusing on themes of contemplation\, devotion\, and transcendence – each of which resonates with deeper cultural narratives. \nIt’s certainly an interesting group: María Magdalena Campos-Pons is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work explores themes of memory\, identity\, and history\, drawing from her Cuban and Yoruba heritage. JK Bruce-Vanderpuije (1899 – 1989)\,has an extensive archive of photography documenting the cultural history from West Africa. Dina Nur Satti creates ceramics deeply influenced by her studies of African art and pre-colonial African societies. DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Mexican artist whose practice focuses on hybrid sculptural forms that draw inspiration from modernism\, popular culture\, and specific historic moments. In particular\, Orlaineta explores post-war design and architecture\, generally depicting biomorphic shapes with a strong surrealist influence. \nIn his new body of work\, Orlaineta reflects on the philosophical explorations of perception and essence\, challenging traditional notions of art and the birth point of objects through a profound engagement with materiality and meaning. His exploration of objects as non-functional or decontextualised allows him to strip them down to their purest form: a thing. What is it that differentiates things from objects\, or even from art? How do these things interact with their environment? Is it the environment that gives them meaning\, or vice versa? At what point during the process of making something\, does it actually become something? \nThrough his works\, Edgar Orlaineta seeks to eliminate any pre- conceptualised notions of the depicted objects\, reducing them to what they appear as to the naked eye: things.

DESCRIPTION:Two weeks of Emirati culture\, past and present – “a living expression of Abu Dhabi’s cultural heritage” – in what is probably the traditional heart of Abu Dhabi. \nBuilding on the success of the last festival\, the 2025 event sees the return of the traditional crafts area Makers Space – “through a rich programme of workshops\, talks and design showcases\, guests can learn skills for camping\, adventure and navigating the environment\, and explore how a deep history of life lived in harmony with the landscape is echoed in fresh approaches to design in the UAE today”. \nAlso returning is the Gahwa Championships for the preparation of traditional Arabic coffee; House of Artisans will present Al Teeb\, a celebration of traditional Emirati perfumery; and isitors can also learn more about Emirati culture with Sanad Al Sanaa\, a play showcasing national values like hospitality\, solidarity and cooperation.  \nThe festival’s rousing main show\, created in partnership with Abu Dhabi Heritage Police\, brings together shadow-play projections\, grand poetry recitals\, and a performance of the traditional Al Tcholeeb – horseriders chant poetry in rhythm with their horses’ hooves as they celebrate their victorious return to Qasr Al Hosn. \nNew this year is a Women’s Majlis\, rooted in the desert environment\, and a chance to get up close and personal with the hunting animals of the region. SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:This English version of an award-winning French comedy has been winning rave reviews\, and the production has popped up a few times at various Dubai venues in the last few months – most (deservedly) selling out. \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. An imposing Shakespearian actor tells incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nMatthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht\, two-time winners of the local Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival\, for Complices Théâtre. There’s a second performance on 26 Janaury. \nNote that as well as the ticket price\, you’ll need access to Alserkal Avenue’s Quoz Arts Fest to get at the Junction. So add an extra AED 63 to the cost of the outing. It’s still worth it. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Zé Tepedino: Marina
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the UAE by Brazilian carioca artist Zé Tepedino is curated by Amanda Abi Khalil and also features a work by Hassan Sharif. \nSays the gallery: “Marina is not a place but a tide\, a rhythm carried in folds\, fibres\, and fragments”. Zé Tepedino presents works that reflect on the layers (both physical and emotional) that shape our world. He collects the leftovers of Rio’s streets and beaches for his pieces – faded towels\, fabric from beach chairs and umbrellas\, crumpled plastic bags\, styrofoam beer coolers\, discarded Havaianas. \n“Tepedino works with urban fabrics (literally)\, speaks to the resilience of materials\, and the beauty found in the traces we leave behind.” It’s a practice that definitely echoes Hassan Sharif’s way of elevating the mundane into “art”. His Towel 4 (2013)\, included in this exhibition\, uses towels to create a bold\, gestural sculpture\, embodying the energy of repetition and transformation.

DESCRIPTION:A second performance for Complices Théâtre’s production of this fun comedy. It’s mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. An imposing Shakespearian actor tells incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nNote that as well as the ticket price\, you’ll need access to Alserkal Avenue’s Quoz Arts Fest to get at the Junction. So add an extra AED 63 to the cost of the outing. It’s still worth it. \n

SUMMARY:Slavs and Tatars: Simurgh Self-Help
DESCRIPTION:This is The Third Line’s third solo exhibition with the artist collective Slavs and Tatar\, presenting a new body of work inspired by Marcel Broodthaers’ Musée d’Art Moderne – Département des Aigles (1968-1972) – one of the most influential works of conceptual art of the 20th century. In Simurgh Self-Help\, Slavs and Tatars embark on an inventive ‘translation’ of the eagle through the lens of Simurgh\, a mythical bird deeply rooted in Turkic and Persianate folklore\, Sufi traditions\, and the literature of the Caucasus and Central Asia. \nGallery One is dedicated to exploring the mythology of Simurgh\, a winged creature often depicted with the body of a peacock and the head of a dog. The exhibition offers a speculative history\, presenting an alter-ego for contemporary societies dealing with dilemmas about national identity and nationalism. If the eagle serves as a repository for nationalism and empire\, rooted in geopolitical concerns\, the Simurgh evokes an empire of senses and a dominion of the otherworldly\, bridging the affective and the extractive. \nIn Gallery Two\, the exhibition pivots to explore melons as Central Asian repositories of value\, knowledge\, and world-building. Writing\, central to Slavs and Tatars’ practice\, appears in the texture of melon skins and within the pages of books. SUMMARY:Adrian Pepe: A Shroud is a Cloth 
DESCRIPTION:Adrian Pepe’s poetic meditation on fragmentation and renewal gets an extended run at NIKA Project Space. It uses a monumental 200m2 woollen textile piece that previously wrapped a building damaged in the 2020 Beirut Port explosion to highlight the relationship between materials\, cultural landscapes\, and ecological intimacy\, “challenging the rigid demarcations between art\, labor\, nature\, and performance through a textile medium” as the gallery has it. \nThe works in this show\, all derived from a single source\, range in scale from intimate to monumental. Wool – cleansed\, processed\, manipulated\, and recontextualised – becomes a vessel for gestures\, images\, and rituals. Debris extracted from it – dirt\, seeds\, remnants of vegetable matter – captures the landscape within the material. Stitching\, felting\, and acts of assembly transform these materials into new compositions\, reflecting on material processes\, ecological intimacy\, and the fragility of being. “Wool has this capacity to hold time – it is resilient yet malleable\, intimate yet expansive\,” says Pepe. “In this exhibition\, I am exploring how materials are never neutral; they shape\, and are shaped by care\, labor\, and the environments they inhabit.” \nTo 17 May. \nAbove: Adrian Pepe\, Entangled Matters (fragment) (2024)

DESCRIPTION:The UAE’s biggest and best literary event is back at the newly renovated InterContinental Dubai Festival City\, with the usual cornucopia of writers\, creators and thought leaders – a total of around 150 events. That’s slightly fewer than usual\, and the festival is a day shorter than last year; there’s still the usual favourites (Desert Stanzas\, LitFest After Hours\, Discovery Talks\, the LitFest Families programme) running alongside the busy schedule of author talks and panels. \nBig-name authors this time include Abraham Verghese\, Hala Gorani\, Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket)\, Chigozie Obioma\, Abdel Illah Benarafa\, poet and author Khalid Albudoor\, and the celebrated Palestinian chef and cookbook author Fadi Kattan. \n“Global conversations around identity and culture have never been more crucial\,” said LitFest director Ahlam Bolooki\, “and we are honoured to welcome literary icons from across the globe whose works speak to the heart of these issues … Now\, more than ever\, we need stories that connect us to our shared humanity\, and the Emirates LitFest is where those stories happen”. \nThe full programme is here\, including prices. This show features one large-scale installation and over 50 sculptures in glass\, all embodying Chihuly’s innovative techniques\, bold use of colour\, and captivating forms. \nA beacon within the exhibition\, Chihuly’s Tower and Persian Wall installations are monumental glass sculptures that redefine the spaces in which they are placed. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of ten works by the influential Khor Fakkan artist\, one of the “Pioneer Five” who bolstered the contemporary art scene in the UAE in the 1980s and influenced a generation of artists in the region. Curated by Tarek Abou El Fetouh\, this show offers a reflection on his decades-long artistic practice; expanding on the work initially presented in the UAE National Pavilion at the 2024 Biennale di Venezia in 2024. \nIn his practice\, Al Saadi embodies a wanderer\, chronicler\, cartographer\, poet\, decipherer\, memory carrier\, and storyteller. This exhibition includes works that were produced on his journeys in the wilderness\, and invites viewers to explore his creative process in relation to the practices of Arab poets from centuries ago. \nTo 4 May.

SUMMARY:Alla Abdunabi: Are your memories of me enough for you?
DESCRIPTION:Alla Abdunabi’s first solo exhibition presents a new body of work that critiques and engages with simulacra\, a concept used in philosophy and cultural studies to analyse how symbols shape our perceptions of what is accepted as “real.” \nThe work emphasises the ways that iconography has been preserved and restored across different periods of history. In doing so\, it raises crucial questions about how symbols not only endure but gain new significance as they are continually reintroduced into contemporary contexts. This restoration process\, rather than simply reviving a historical moment or object\, often reinforces the power structures embedded within them.Through the preservation of these icons in art\, museums\, or public spaces\, Abdunabi investigates their influence and how they shape cultural and political narratives into the future. \nCentral to the exhibition is the narrative of the Barbary lion\, whose physical extinction and symbolic immortality serve as the perfect illustration of this phenomenon. Once native to North Africa\, the Barbary lion was hunted into extinction by imperial powers\, becoming a casualty of both ecological destruction and colonial assertion of dominance over nature. Yet\, even in death\, the Barbary lion lives on as a potent symbol of imperial power and grandeur. \nAlla Abdunabi is participating in the 2025 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program\, an annual capacity-building initiative that provides early-career artists in the UAE with the opportunity to explore new techniques\, test ideas\, and create a cohesive body of work for their first solo exhibition. \nTo 4 May.

DESCRIPTION:The latest edition of what is being presented as one of Dubai Culture’s flagship initiatives is back in Al Shindagha Historic District. We’re not sure exactly what you’ll get this year – the website wasn’t working when last we tried it\, though you may have better luck; there seems to be no overall directory/guide available; and the Instagram feed is busy but somewhat incoherent. \nStill\, we’re promised “a rich agenda filled with exhibitions\, programmes\, activities\, live performances\, visual arts\, unique culinary experiences and beyond … a celebration of art which focuses on supporting and showcasing the works of Emirati\, UAE and GCC-based artists”. \nWe do know that something over 40 public art pieces and installations will be displayed across 19 houses and en plein air around Al Shindagha. The festival programme has more than 450 workshops\, talks and panel discussions\, over 100 live performances\, 13 theatrical shows\, and six orchestral performances (among them performances by the Firdaus Orchestra\, the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra\, and the Dubai City Sound ensemble). \nThe last Sikka Art and Design Festival apparently attracted nearly 162\,000 visitors. “This year’s edition promises to raise the bar even higher\,” opines the press release. It must be worth checking out …

DESCRIPTION:The rebranding of Custot Gallery Dubai to Waddington Custot Dubai is coming up trumps with some big names (the partnership of long-time London art dealer Leslie Waddington\, and French dealer Stephane Custot dates back to 2010\, and Custot became sole owner in 2015). This time its a solo exhibition by Marc Quinn that aims to explore humanity’s complex relationship with nature and our environment: “playing with scale and materiality\, Quinn is able to draw out the balance that exists between us and nature\, revealing how almost everything in the world today has been manipulated and influenced by human desire …” Must be worth seeing.
