DESCRIPTION:“Amidst the unsettled times of an uprising in Iran\, grappling with uncertainties\, sadness\, and paradoxes\, artist Amir Khojasteh sought solace in his studio and tried to make sense of what was happening … In this topsy-turvy world\, the artist persisted in painting and crafting head sculptures of the divs\, as if triumphing over them in a parallel timeline” (a div in Persian mythology is a supernatural creature or demon\, often depicted as a powerful and malevolent entity with magical abilities). Khojasteh’s sculptures symbolise victory over the divs\, capturing the demons in their defeated state. \nAlongside the heads are paintings that echo monotype print accidents and textures on canvas. Every painting can be read as a self-portrait or a commentary on a bizarre situation. “Dazed by the smoke of the ongoing fire\, one will need to find ways to make that situation more apprehensible. Khojasteh laughs at what he witnessed\, and through this laughter\, he exposes its contingency\, its ephemerality\, and irreality [sic]”. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:A rare chance to see an unusual\, indeed exceptional hip hop artist at work. Oddisee has always ploughed his own furrow – making his own music for the last 20 years and running his own label now\, avoiding the temptations of big-money promoters\, organising his own promotion and tours. He merges elements of jazz\, funk\, and go-go into his production\, and his lyrics eschew the easy clichés and repetition of so many hip hop artists these days in favour of an articulate\, lyrical approach. “We hear of people like Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe being great American authors and writers\,” he says. “But what we love about them is being displayed in rap times ten: double entendres\, metaphors\, similes\, plays on words\, the ability to use poetic devices. These are all standard mechanisms to create beautiful literature and poetry\, which are executed on an Olympic level in rap music.” \nOur feature on Oddisee is here. \nOddisee will be performing with DJ Unown. The support act is Jindi\, probably the closest homegrown equivalent to Oddisee — there are stories in his songs\, melodies that mix genres from funk to dancehall via Afrobeat. We’ll be getting pieces from his brand new album\, Reign & Fire (released 23 May). The warm-up sets come from the everr-reliable Big Hass and DJ Katt\, known for his high-energy Afrobeat-and-house-music sets.

DESCRIPTION:“If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth\,” said Albert Einstein\, “man would have no more than four years left to live”. Well\, all over the world bees have been dying for the past few years. Although the causes for this are still a mystery\, one thing is already clear: there is more at stake than simply a few dead insects\, and a great deal more than just honey. Imhoof’s documentary embarks on a journey to meet some of the people whose lives depend on bees – a Swiss beekeeper in he Alps\, the gigantic almond plantations of California\, a bee brain researcher in Berlin\, a pollen trader in China. \nThis film screens as part of the NAAS film programme\, a collaborative presentation by several cultural institutions in the UAE in partnership with Manarat Al Sadiyyat:  the Embassies of France\, Austria\, Switzerland and Canada\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, and the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region.

DESCRIPTION:The best ever concert film? Certain one of the best; and one of the best suits\, too … Jonathan Demme captured the energy and artsy groove of David Byrne\, Tina Weymouth\, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison at their best. Shot over three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983\, it shows you what all the fuss was about as Tallking Heads run through some of their best\, from Psycho Killer and Take Me to the River to Burning Down the House. The Hollywood gigs were part of the tour that promoted the Heads’ Speaking in Tongues album\, which brought a lot more funk into the white Eno-based arthouse sound of their previous releases. The inspiration for that included Tom Tom Club\, the side project of drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth\, which was real a dance-funk outfit that also features in the Hollywood gigs … Highly recommended\, especially as this is a newly restored print to celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary.

After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. DESCRIPTION:A reprise of Culture Emulsion’s careful and effective treatment of the Vagina Monologues; the dramatist Eve Ensler based her text on more than 200 interviews with women who confided their sensations\, their traumas\, their aspirations\, their anxieties\, their joys … As the publicity for this Francophone presentation originally put it: “plus qu’une pièce de théâtre\, c’est un véritable phénomène de société”. This powerful piece of feminist theatre is performed (in French\, of course) by Solena Banks\, Marie-Alice Drissi and Chrystele Rossignol and directed by Stéphane Brismontier as part of Culture Emulsion’s annual Tous en Scène festival of Francophone theatre.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mr Brainwash
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the French-born LA-based street artist who started filming graffiti art and subsequently became an artist in his own right after an off-hand suggestion from Banksy. As it happens\, many of the 10 works on show here are reworkings of Banksy originals (there is a persistant rumour that Mr Brainwash was/is Banksy’s alter ego\, or possible vice versa: but Mr Brainwash’s artistic evolution was mapped in Banksy’s 2010 documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop\, and Banksy has confirmed that Mr Brainwash is indeed real and a friend). Mr Brainswash has also deployed other iconic images in his paintings\, notably from Warhol and Haring. The resulting blend of Pop Art and Street Art he describes as his own form of “graffiti hybrid”.

SUMMARY:Mohamed Yousif and Maggie Otieno: Solace in Soil
DESCRIPTION:A duo exhibition for Emirati artist Mohamed Yousif and Kenyan sculptor Maggie Otieno that “celebrates the grounded connections between the practices of the two artists and the cross-cultural exchange between the Middle East and Africa”. Or as curator Shamma Al Mheiri puts it\, “Maggie Otieno and Dr Mohamed Yousif share leitmotifs of expressing generational sentiments and experiences through tangible expressions. Perhaps distinct in visual identities\, Otieno and Dr Yousif manifest connections deeper than the aesthetic portrayals in a state of continual solace …” The gallery is equally effusive: “This exhibition fosters a symbiotic exchange between the artists and their artistic practices\, intimately linked to their earthy foundations\, enabling their work to converse and showcase the interconnectedness between the regions”. \nMohamed Yousif is regarded as a pioneer of UAE sculpture and is one of the founders of the Emirates Fine Art Society. His 3D work is typically carefully crafted and delicate wooden sculptures\, many woven out of palm tree fronds handpicked in the UAE desert. He has featured in several exhibitions\, including The National Pavilion of the UAE at the 2015 and 2017 Venice Biennales. \nMaggie Otieno characteristically works with long abstract figures comprised of distressed railway sleepers\, originally from India and used to lay the ‘iron snake’ railway line in Kenya at the end of the 19th century – carrying within them stories of travellers\, labourers and communities. “Through her deft manipulation of form and texture\, she endeavours to imbue her sculptures with a sense of temporal continuity\, affording them a palpable resonance with the viewer’s own lived experiences”. \nTo 6 October. \nAbove: Dr Mohamed Yousif\, Camel Movement Series (2005)

SUMMARY:Ballet Hispánico
DESCRIPTION:An Arab World Premiere for Ballet Hispánico\, the largest Hispanic cultural organisation in the States. The company (and subsequently its associated School of Dance and Community Arts Partnerships) was founded in 1970 to challenging stereotypes and demonstrate the joy and celebration to be found in Latindad and Hispanic diasporas; the company tours widely – it has performed for more than 2.5 million people in three continents – and champions choreographers and dancers of all ages from the Hispanic community. “Performances by the Ballet Hispánico dancers are always vibrant and richly textured\,” said The New York Times recently; we don’t know which show they’re doing in Aby Dhabi\, but it may be the En Familia programme that a magpie fan recently saw in New York. This tour through Latin American culture and traditions featured excerpts of classics from the Company’s repertory\, including a restaging of Talley Beatty’s electrifying Recuerdo de Campo Amor. Recommended\, especially at prices starting as low as AED 100. \nThere’s a second and final performance on 1 June.

DESCRIPTION:Hans Zimmer is probably best known for some of the most listened-to soundtracks in the history of cinema – The Lion King\, Gladiator\, Pirates of the Caribbean\, The Dark Knight\, Dune – but his live show is also pretty special. It features new arrangements from the Oscar-winning composer’s stellar back catalogue\, recreated on stage by Zimmer himself (he’s an excellent keyboardist and plays a mean guitar) with a large orchestra and dancers (45 of them in total). Recommended. \nThere’s a second show on 1 June.
