SUMMARY:PowerPointless Networking Night
DESCRIPTION:One of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs is back after a couple of months’ hiatus: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team for an iftar (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\,but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. It’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n

SUMMARY:Shrek the Musical
DESCRIPTION:The always excellent Abu Dhabi Choral Group\, the city’s best-established and best-regarded community theatre company\, offers this “hilarious and heartwarming” adaptation of the popular film\, a successful Broadway and West End musical (music by Jeanine Tesori\, book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire). It’s based on the first film\, albeit with elements of the sequels: so we have the grumpy but lovable ogre embarking on a quest to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona for the scheming Lord Farquaad. Along the way\, Shrek is joined by a lively cast of fairytale characters\, including his wisecracking sidekick Donkey. There’s a message – “they challenge stereotypes\, discover the meaning of friendship\, and prove that beauty lies within … Shrek The Musical celebrates individuality and self-acceptance” but it’s the jokes\, the repartee\, the songs and the sheer fun that will get you applauding for encores … \nThere are further shows on 30 and 31 May at 7.30pm and on 31 May and 1 June at 2pm.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro

SUMMARY:Making of: dir Cédric Kahn (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Cinema has always been very interested in itself. In Cédric Kahn’s Making of we are introduced to a movie\, a story about workers fighting to protect their factory from being relocated. And we meet a variety of characters involved in it – there is the director (Denis Podalydes) who can’t seem to get everything into place\, the producer (Emmanuelle Bercot) who wants to rewrite the ending and cut the budget\, the veteran lead actor (Jonathan Cohen) who is a diva on set\,and the budding director (Stefan Crepon) who has been commissioned to shoot a behind-the-scenes ‘making of’ documentary. \nThe result makes for a satisfyingly complex fly-on-the-wall comedy\, with a large ensemble cast of French actors having fun with the long list of roles. There’s a nod to social topics too; the issues discussed in the film-within-a-film – underpaid workers\, torn labourers\, possibilities of losing work – all mirror the stressed film crew trying to just finish this production. And it’s timely\, given the strikes that have been going on in Hollywood recently … \nIn French with English subtitles. AF members pay AED 25\, the rest of us pay AED 35. \n

SUMMARY:Parasite: dir Bong Joon Ho (2019)
DESCRIPTION:The South Korean smash hit and multi award winner (including the Cannes Palme d’Or in 2019 and a Best Picture Oscar) is a black comedy thriller: it follows the street-smart Kim family scamming their way into the household of the Park family\, the epitome of aspirational wealth. It’s widely regarded as a critique of late-stage capitalism; it’s also very funny\, in an agreeably dark way\, and features an impactful soundtrack by Jung Jae-il. … \nThis film screens as part of the ninth edition of the Korean Film Festival\, presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Cultural Center. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hazem Harb: Not There\, Yet Felt
DESCRIPTION:Unlike earlier works that centred around collective narratives\, this new body of work from Hazem Harb is highly personal and intimate; it aims to draw the viewer into Harb’s own lived environment\, reflecting his sense of disembodiment\, a feeling of being simultaneously connected to and distanced from his home. ‘Peeling’ is a central metaphor to reveal layered memories and histories embedded within the walls of Harb’s Gaza home; through evocative collage\, neon installation\, and a poignant self-portrait\, the artist raises themes of displacement\, memory\, and our emotional and physical connections to home.

DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE A Room of One’s Own
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Duygu Demir\, NYUAD assistant professor of Art History and curator at the Art Gallery\, this exhibition features new work by current MFA students Maha Alasaker\, Yuehan Dai\, Nour Elbery\, Almaha Jaralla\, Tooba Shaikh\, and Shaima Shamsi that has been developed over the past year. A Room of One’s Own invites viewers to consider the possibilities that emerge when artists are given the freedom to create; the exhibition borrows its title from Virginia Woolf’s 1929 essay\, which argued that creative work requires both physical space and material support; the works on show reflect on personal and shared histories\, examining themes such as colonialism\, displacement\, systems of power\, environmental transformation\, and the boundaries\, mental and physical\, that define experience.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Habuba Farah: Beams of Light
DESCRIPTION:A selection of works from the 1970s to the present by the noted Lebanese-Brazilian artist\, including oils on canvas\, gouache on paper\, and pencil drawings. A highlight is her exploration of ‘neutral gray’ or coloured gray\, achieved by blending primary colours with their complementary counterparts in geometric compositions that often resemble beams of light. \nDespite facing health challenges and well into her 90s\, Farah remains devoted to her practice. “My body may be fragile\, but my mind is a whirlwind. DESCRIPTION:How do contemporary artists grapple with the shifting role of text\, literature and knowledge in an age of AI? This group exhibition curated by Tor Seidel tries to answer that question. As Seidel puts it\, “Has access to texts and images become so easy that we must ask ourselves what we still read\, write\, and know? What influence do these texts written by AI agents have on visual productions\, and how enduringly do they shape what was once conceived of as collective memory? … In this exhibition\, we have invited artists whose works engage with classical literature\, examine scientific imagery within the context of its interpretation\, engage in\nconversations with AI identities\, or consider machine sounds as creators of independent poetics”. \nThe artists: \nAbdulghani Alanahawi\nBrian Gonzales\nBao Li\nMarcel Buehler\nDaniela Friebel\nMutasim Al Kubaisi\nJens Lystraeten\nChristiana De Marchi\nUnaiza Ismail\nIsaac Sullivan\nTor Seidel\nCharlie Koolhaas\nShahad Mohamed AlBlooshi \nTo 30 June.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Maryam Hoseini: Swells
DESCRIPTION:The second solo exhibition at this gallery for the Iran-born\, NY-based artist features new paintings that revels in transplanting elements within themselves. Hoseini says “the figures have moved from architecture to landscape”; so the flat figure expands and multiplies in rounded limb\, breast\, buttock\, organ\, and thigh … Ground\, now rectangular\, sometimes rounded\, is repossessed by this swell. It grows as if vegetal. Devouring itself\, boring into the wood panel’s visible\, soaked\, grain like a termite\, the figure makes of such pictorial amplification a carnal feast …”
