SUMMARY:Remote Abu Dhabi by Rimini Protokoll
DESCRIPTION:Rimini Protokoll pushes the boundaries of conventional theatre. During this performance walk within the collective’s ‘Remote X’ series (2013–ongoing)\, you are invited to explore the growing presence of artificial intelligence in future cities; for this tour\, designed specifically for Abu Dhabi\, you wear headphones (provided) and are guided by a computer-generated voice (in Arabic or English) into familiar and unfamiliar sites “that emerge as if from an imagined film”. \nThe starting point is the Landmark Tower on the Abu Dhabi Corniche Family Park. The Rimini Protokoll experience is remarkable and can be eye-opening; the collective has done Abu Dhabi a couple of times in the past\, as part of early Abu Dhabi Art extras\, and we’d heartily recommend the trip … \nThis is part of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. \nFuture dates: \n5 January\n19 January \n2 February\n9 February\n16 February \n6 April\n13 April\n20 April\n27 April \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Way of the Forest
DESCRIPTION:This travelling edition of the Colomboscope arts festival features work by 19 artists from South Asia and Africa. \nTaking over Galleries 1 and 2 inside 421 Arts Campus\, it focuses on interdependence\, custodianship\, and restorative practices across rainforests\, wilderness\, mountain cultivations\, and riverine wetlands. It invites approaching the forest as a multispecies school – moving from the lexicon of plunder\, reckless supremacy\, and extinction\, to embrace its lessons in organic networks of mutual aid and restorative balance. As the blurb has it: “This exhibition is an intricate study of our eroding ecological histories\, of lost environmental wisdoms\, monstrous developmental agendas\, and ghosts of extraction. It endeavours to plot legacies of colonization of resources and minds that operate in disguise. Within mutating landscapes\, artists question who owns forest lands\, who gets displaced\, and who is restricted from sites marked for conservation …” \nParticipating artists are Rakibul Anwar\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Shiraz Bayjoo\, U. Arulraj\, Jayatu Chakma\, Nahla al Tabbaa\, Pathum Dharmarathna\, Sangita Maity\, Karachi LaJamia\, Sanod Maharjan\, Saodat Ismailova\, Pushpakanthan Pakkiyarajah\, Sarmila Sooriyakumar with Pirainila Krishnarajah\, Otobong Nkanga\, MTF Rukshana\, Tamarra Jayasundera\, Karunasiri Wijesinghe\, Kulagu Tu Buvongan\, and Thava Thajendran. \nOriginally presented in Colombo in January 2024\, the exhbition has been adapted to engage audiences in the UAE. It’s the second time that 421 has partnered with Colomboscope\, a collaboration exemplifies 421’s “commitment to fostering cultural dialogue\, forging new modes of institutional support\, and inspiring ways of thinking about art and its role in addressing global challenges”.

SUMMARY:Home Alone: dir Chris Columbus (1990)
DESCRIPTION:The original and the best of the Home Alone franchise\, funny and slightly sad because eight-year-old Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left behind while his family heads to Paris for Christmas and they simply don’t notice that he’s not there … He does a great job defending the family home from two bumbling burglars on Christmas Eve\, though.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Farid Abu Shakra: Threads of Landscape — Engraved Narratives
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of works that fuse engraving\, embroidery\, and landscape\, presented by Gallery One\, Ramallah. In Abu Shakra’s work\, landscapes are more than geographical representations: “they are woven tapestries of experience and narrative”\, says the gallery. “Each piece captures a layered perspective\, where fine lines and punctuated textures convey the enduring presence of land and community … The engravings draw from traditional forms while experimenting with contemporary techniques\, creating a visual language that is both timeless and strikingly relevant … Landscape is not merely a backdrop; it is an active storyteller\, revealing the layered histories and enduring spirit of the communities it represents”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Thaier Helal: Navigating Through Nothing
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition featuring Helal’s most recent body of work and a pivotal moment in the artist’s evolution\, a more straightforward yet deeply expressive style without the constraints of his previous methods. The new approach\, characterized by loose\, dynamic strokes\, invites viewers to engage with the artwork instinctually; “by focusing on the expressive potential of each stroke\, he draws on the tradition of abstraction\, where the act of painting becomes a narrative in itself” as the gallery puts it.

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

\nFuture dates: \n19 January \n2 February\n9 February\n16 February \n6 April\n13 April\n20 April\n27 April \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdoulaye Konaté: Sambadio
DESCRIPTION:This solo show for the pioneering Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté is inspired by the final track of Ali Farka Touré’s iconic 1976 album Le Jeune Chansonnier du Mali. The song Sambadio celebrates farmers with lyrics reflecting a father’s passionate plea for his son to honour the earth. In a similar vein\, Konaté’s latest works draw upon themes of Bedouin culture\, integrating motifs that pay tribute to their relationship with the land. \nKonaté creates large-scale textile-based installations using woven and dyed materials native to his homeland Mali. His abstract and figurative tableaux explore both aesthetic language and diverse socio-political and environmental issues; this show includes a new monumental work 9m wide.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Eman Alhashemi: Superficial Transactions
DESCRIPTION:Alhashemi’s second solo exhibition at the gallery is her first after returning from the States with a Master’s in Fine Arts. Curated by Nasser Abdullah\, this exhibition presents a series of works that build on her previous experiences\, “appearing as annotations and reflections that encapsulate different phases she has undergone since the beginning of her career”. From her early days with hand-printing and producing repetitive editions\, she has moved on to sculpture and ceramics\, then performance art and multimedia video; her practice is characterised by an ability to embrace mistakes and inconsistencies across editions\, a reconciled perspective on imperfection and difference that echoes the diversity of human nature.
