The men are both established\, both very funny\, and both get less attention than they deserve; Tiernan is everything you want from a droll Irish comic (with a dash of the slightly baffled inhabitant of modern life that he parlayed into a starring part as the hapless dad in Derry Girls)\, Bridges comes with acid Scottish wit (“working in Poundstretcher\, eh? Working in a shop where everything is worth a quid except you”). Irish comic and podcaster Joanne McNally was a late addition to the bill\, which has bumped up the ticket prices. Even so\, this gig is highly recommended

DESCRIPTION:An important documentary: Reyhaneh Jabbari was a female student in Tehran who was hanged for murder\, but she had acted in self-defence against a rapist. She would have received a pardon and a short jail term if she had retracted her testimony; she didn’t. Niederzoll has had access to personal and secretly recorded videos provided by Reyhaneh’s family\,plus their testimonies and the letters written by Reyhaneh Jabbari in prison; the result is a powerful and poignant story of a woman who became a symbol of resistance and women’s rights in Iran and beyond. Farsi with English subtitles. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. Currently\, he is still teaching filmmaking at NYUAD while working on an upcoming feature film. \nIndividual films on weekdays are AED 30 per head\, weekends are AED 50 per day\, and there’s an all-inclusive ticket at AED 150.

Donya\, an Afghan refugee with PTSD\, Donya already has memories aplenty – which may explain her insomnia\, the way she stares solemnly into space\, or the maturity that she possesses as a 23-year-old. It also means that\, as her boss predicts\, her fortune cookie messages pierce the hearts of strangers … This Jarmusch-like black-and-white comedy is a deadpan delight that eschews ostentatious set pieces and favours sombre reflection. It was a big hit at Sundance and SWSX last year. SUMMARY:At the Edge of Land
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition\, curated by Lucas Morin\, highlights unexpectedly interconnected geographies\, resources and commodities\, moving between land and sea to tell stories of conflict\, erosion and extraction; it’s based on works from the Art Jameel Collection plus loans and new commissions by 18 international artists. It originated at Hayy Arts in Jeddah (where it ran November 2023 to April 2024) and the works presented trace the trade routes on which both Dubai and Jeddah are located – the busy maritime path connecting East Asia and Europe via the Gulf\, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.  It’s accompanied by a film programme in Gallery 9 up to 18 August 18.
