SUMMARY:A Real Pain: dir Jesse Eisenberg (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Jesse Eisenberg wrote\, directed and stars in this whip-sharp comedy of two Jewish American cousins touring Poland in honour of their grandmother. The fun comes from the verbal sparring between uptight\, neurotic David (Eisenberg) and his outgoing\, unpredictable cousin Benji (Kieran Culkin)\, but it’s also a substantial and emotionally nourishing character study – and the final shot of the film is absolutely devastating. A BAFTA Award winner\, and tipped for an Oscar too. Very highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Mobius Design Studio: Crystal No.6
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition celebrates the historic Dubai neighbourhood of Freej Al Murar (on the Deira side of Dubai Creek) as a living archive of artistry\, community\, and resilience. In this research project\, Sharjah-based Mobius Design Studio – led by Hadeyeh Badri\, Hala Al-Ani\, and Riem Ibrahim – has explored the layered histories and vibrant culture of Freej Al Murar. \nAt its core\, the project acknowledges the erasure driven by capitalism\, where the beauty of traditional garments often overshadows the labour and stories of their makers. The project began with an exploration of the mkhawera\, the traditional embroidered garment of Emirati women; this work pays homage to the artisans who are often excluded from the narrative. \nThe exhibition features an installation of nine addas (embroidery stretchers) with embroidered personal narratives by artisans\, a short film by Abdulla Majjan\, and a publication with essays that explore the neighbourhood’s significance. \nTo 11 March.

SUMMARY:Nada Baraka and Esraa Elfeky: Across A Velvet Horizon
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative presentation of Egyptian artists Nada Baraka and Esraa Elfeky that plays on “a sense of incompleteness … Here\, history is unfixed and left open to question. Viewers are invited to sit with uncertainty\, to embrace the search even when the full picture remains tantalisingly out of reach”. Baraka’s evocative paintings and Elfeky’s tactile sculptures offer a visual narrative that blurs personal\, cultural\, and environmental histories\, occupying a space between the real and the imagined. \nTo 8 April. \nAbove: Nada Baraka\, Lukewarm Library

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s most peopular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:The final performance for this version of the Shakespeare play – featuring a five-piece band\, songs by Queen\, dancing\, and lots of swordfighting. \nSays the blurb: “Imagine Shakespeare’s classic envisioned by Freddie Mercury\, blending elements of Zeffirelli\, Baz Luhrmann\, Jamie Lloyd and Bridgerton into a magical spectacle. The production features iconic Queen hits such as Bohemian Rhapsody\, We Will Rock You\, Somebody to Love\, Who wants to live forever and We are the Champions …” Director Alex Broun says the adaptation by Lydia DeSouza “takes the original story to a whole new level and reveals magic that may often be lost in the text. The show literally has everything – dancing\, duels\, romance\, singing\, and one of the greatest love stories of all time. This will be a night of pure joy you won’t forget.” And of course it opens on Valentine’s Day … \nThe production is directed by Broun for the highly rated Cross Bronx Crew\, “an award-winning theatre group that loves the art of acting\, making good theatre\, and having fun while we do it …”. The cast features a mix of some of the city’s top actors plus recent Sharjah Performing Arts Academy graduates ”and exciting new faces”. SUMMARY:Remote Abu Dhabi by Rimini Protokoll
DESCRIPTION:Rimini Protokoll pushes the boundaries of conventional theatre. During this performance walk within the collective’s ‘Remote X’ series (2013–ongoing)\, you are invited to explore the growing presence of artificial intelligence in future cities; for this tour\, designed specifically for Abu Dhabi\, you wear headphones (provided) and are guided by a computer-generated voice (in Arabic or English) into familiar and unfamiliar sites “that emerge as if from an imagined film”. \nThe starting point is the Landmark Tower on the Abu Dhabi Corniche Family Park. The Rimini Protokoll experience is remarkable and can be eye-opening; the collective has done Abu Dhabi a couple of times in the past\, as part of early Abu Dhabi Art extras\, and we’d heartily recommend the trip … \nThis is part of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. \nFuture dates: \n6 April\n13 April\n20 April\n27 April \n

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Boiler Room Six
DESCRIPTION:Now this should be an impressive piece of theatre: Boiler Room Six tells the almost impossible but true survival story of Frederick Barrett\, lead firemen in one of the boiler rooms on the Titanic. Barrett’s story is one of the most devastating accounts of the last few hours of Titanic\, and Tom Foreman’s one-man play gives a voice to the working men below deck … The play premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2024\, selling out its entire run\, and receiving widespread acclaim\, including being awarded the Best Overall Show of the festival by the Derek Awards. \nBoiler Room Six is a production of Foreman’s own company\, and it’s touring right now. The play is directed by Tom Foreman\, but we don’t know who’s playing Barrett (in UK shows it’s been Max Beken\, who got some very good reviews). There are just two performances\, on 15 and 16 February.
