SUMMARY:Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi: Harleking
DESCRIPTION:Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi\, based between Berlin and Turin\, have been working as a duo since 2008 with a style that merges dance\, performance and visual art. Harleking is a choreographic work that was first seen in 2018 and has since been featured at several dance festivals; its subject is a harlequinade style of mannered gestures through jerky\, robotic movements that manage to combine a courtly formality with a sense of danger and mistrust. There are obvious references to the Harlequin of the Commedia dell’Arte\, a sly servant moved by an insatiable hunger\, a trickster who ultimately derives from a devil character in medieval Passion Plays. Harleking‘s mode of communication has something of ancient wall decorations in which monstrous figures blend in with elegant ornament – figures which can evoke amusement without any joy. \nThis piece is part of the Frontiers dance programme. There’s a second performance on 14 December at 7pm; and Panzetti and Ticconi are giving a workshop on the techniques used in Harleking on 14 December at 1pm.

SUMMARY:Zé Tepedino: Marina
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the UAE by Brazilian carioca artist Zé Tepedino is curated by Amanda Abi Khalil and also features a work by Hassan Sharif. \nSays the gallery: “Marina is not a place but a tide\, a rhythm carried in folds\, fibres\, and fragments”. Zé Tepedino presents works that reflect on the layers (both physical and emotional) that shape our world. He collects the leftovers of Rio’s streets and beaches for his pieces – faded towels\, fabric from beach chairs and umbrellas\, crumpled plastic bags\, styrofoam beer coolers\, discarded Havaianas. \n“Tepedino works with urban fabrics (literally)\, speaks to the resilience of materials\, and the beauty found in the traces we leave behind.” It’s a practice that definitely echoes Hassan Sharif’s way of elevating the mundane into “art”. His Towel 4 (2013)\, included in this exhibition\, uses towels to create a bold\, gestural sculpture\, embodying the energy of repetition and transformation. \nThis exhibition coincides with Zé Tepedino’s public art residency at Al Serkal in collaboration with TAP (Temporary Art Platform)\, culminating in a site-specific intervention by the artist during Quoz Arts Fest on 25–26 January. \nTo 26 January. \nAbove: Zé Tepedino\, Meia maré II (Half tide) (2024)

SUMMARY:Farhad Ahrarnia: No Scheherazade
DESCRIPTION:Farhad Ahrania’s fourth solo exhibition at this gallery celebrates all things 1980s via “a multi-textual autopsy which invariably examines the complex legacy of Princess Diana [and] Keith Haring”. SUMMARY:Máté Mészáros: Mechanics of Distance
DESCRIPTION:This piece for three different trained dancers – they come from backgrounds in classical ballet\, folk dance and contemporary dance – has been performed several times since its 2019 premiere\, but it is always different since it is always adapted to the specific the space provided. Mechanics of Distance is about positioning static and moving bodies\, the dancers all interfering with one another’ s personal space\, cramming matching and mismatched systems into them and examining the distance between the bodies; the choreography aims to ask how far the limits of dance can be extended\, what potential there is in an open space waiting to be explored. \nThis piece is part of the Frontiers dance programme. There’s a performative version of the choreography\, with participants following the moves and experimenting with the space taken by bodies\, on 15 December at 3pm.

SUMMARY:Samaa Wakim & Samar Haddad King: Losing It
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in a war zone means living and breathing politics. The Palestinian choreographer and performer Samaa Wakim asks herself how these experiences impact her identity in this solo performance which explores how the trauma of previous generations manifests in her own body through movement and sound. The piece dives into her memories of growing up under occupation\, exploring the various realities she lives in and the fantasies she’s created in order to survive. As fear overtakes her\, her world begins to disintegrate: the floor becomes unstable\, and the sounds begin to warp into a world where reality and fantasy blur … \nCreated in conversation with a live score by Samar Haddad King\, the soundscape features field recordings taken throughout Palestine since 2010. Accompanied by Wakim’s vocals\, the sounds of fear and safety come together to the point where past and present cloud the future. \nThis piece is part of the Frontiers dance programme. Samaa Wakim and Samar Haddad King discuss their work in a conversation on Interdisciplinarity in Dance at 4.30pm on 15 December.

SUMMARY:Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi: Harleking
DESCRIPTION:The second performance\, part of the Frontiers dance programme\, for this piece by Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi.

SUMMARY:Le Trio Joubran
DESCRIPTION:Music under the stars on Sharjah’s Al Noor Island with a noted oud trio playing traditional Palestinian music with Western stylings. Brothers Samir\, Wissam\, and Adnan Joubran\, originally from Nazareth and now dividing their time between Nazareth\, Ramallah and Paris\, will happily admit to gathering musical influences anywhere they can find them; but the results through several CDs and many spectacular performances are never less than potently nationalistic in their intent. “The Trio Joubran talents as musicians are complemented by their compassion as human beings\,” wrote Brian Eno. “Their longstanding and determined commitment has made them a symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance. Trio Joubran\, in its brilliant and fiery exuberance\, sends out a message: Palestine is alive.” \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Art Here 2024
DESCRIPTION:Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Art Here 2024\, now in its fourth edition\, has rapidly become a significant entry in the Middle East’s art exhibition calendar – a regional competition for 3D work that benefits from sponsorship by luxe watchmaker Richard Mille to the extent that at the end of the exhibition one of the five artists shown will get a not insignificant $60\,000 cash award as part of the Richard Mille Art Prize. \nThis year\, Louvre Abu Dhabi and guest curator Simon Njami invited responses to the theme ‘Awakenings’; the selected artists are tasked with translating the concept of openness into visual forms via sculptures or audiovisual installations “that address questions of today and the near future”. \nThere were 230 submissions in total\, and five have been selected for the exhibition. The competition this year has been expanded to include North Africa alongside the GCC\, and three of the shortlist came from outside the Gulf. Franco-Tunisian artist Férielle Doulain-Zouari explores the coexistence of natural and artificial worlds via installations\, sculptures\, and weaving. Moataz Nasr from Egypt investigates the geopolitics and social development of Egypt and Africa\, testing the notion of identity and belonging in a world of globalisation. And Nicène Kossentini (Tunisia) uses video to capture the slow transformation of people and things\, revealing intimate places and bodies and uncovering the buried truths of her heritage. \nThe other two on the shortlist will probably be more familiar to local arty audiences – Lamya Gargash (Dubai) and Sarah Almehairi (Abu Dhabi). Gargash usually works in film and photography to document the essence of inhabited and abandoned spaces\, delving into cultural heritage amidst rapid modernisation\, and capturing the beauty of human trace and the value of the mundane – “my desire for seclusion\, and my grieving for our inevitable fate\, has led me to find beauty in ordinary things and bring to life these reticent moments in time …” She’s a Third Line artist and has had several shows there\, including one of our favourites. \nSarah Almehairi has worked in various media – sculpture\, painting\, book art\, fibre art\, photography\, poetry – to explore themes of identity\, language\, materiality and memory. Now signed with Carbon 12\, she was part of the 2019 Youth Takeover at Jameel Arts Centre\, was one of Abu Dhabi Art’s 2022 Beyond: Emerging Artists (a group which also went to Cromwell Place the following year)\, and was commissioned for Alserkal Avenue’s public art projects in 2022 for Alserkal Art Week – she transformed the passages alongside Concrete into a rather good visual poem with her work don’t overlook the weather (as your thoughts collect)\, asking visitors to linger and observe both the earth and the sky as they passed through. \n

SUMMARY:Máté Mészáros: Performative Walk – Mechanics of Distance
DESCRIPTION:During the pandemic\, Máté Mészáros came up with an alternative form of his piece Mechanics of Distance that could still be shared and experienced while spaces were closed and gatherings prohibited. He developed a participative walk to enact nine stages of the choreography; participants can follow a route of printed pictograms\, on their own or together\, and can piece together the choreography of the performance. The result is that participants become quasi-performers themselves\, gaining the physical sensation of the changing proximity of bodies in the space – in this case streets of Alserkal Avenue. \nThis piece is part of the Frontiers dance programme.
