SUMMARY:Thousand Nights and One
DESCRIPTION:“A mesmerising tapestry of tales” promises the blurb. Written and directed by Rasika Agashe\, it’s a magical look at the fate of Scheherazade\, the narrator of the original ‘One Thousand and One Nights’. Rasika Agashe says she has long been fascinated by the Arabian Nights stories; “reading them now\, I realize they are about strong women who navigate their survival through storytelling. That’s the power of storytelling!” \nAt the core of her approach to the Scheherazade story (a Sultan weds anew each day\, only to have the bride slain at dawn to preempt any treachery: Scheherazade bucks the trend by captivating him with her stories\, sparing her life with each new sunrise) is the enigmatic Fakir (Dee Gee)\, who holds the key to Scheherazade’s storytelling; and Amina (Audrey Vaz)\, whose journey of secrets and survival embodies the resilience of women in the face of destiny. \nThere’s a second performance on 9 March.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Zineb Sedira: A way of surviving\, a way of life …
DESCRIPTION:Sedira’s films represent a profound archival exploration of identity\, and cultural activism. Born in 1963 to Algerian parents\, her work is deeply rooted in her self-narration but also sheds light on broader\, interconnected global anxieties surrounding cultural emancipation and diaspora. \nThis exhibition of Sedira’s pioneering cinematic practice is centred on the award-winning Dreams Have No Titles (2022)\, presented as a constructed full-scale cinema box in the Cultural Foundation’s atrium. Originally conceived for the French Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale\, Dreams Have No Titles is an immersive installation comprising film\, sculpture\, photography and performance\, that interweaves the artist’s biography with activist films produced across France\, Algeria and Italy in the 1960s and 1970s\, a pivotal moment in the history of avant-garde film production. \nAlso featured are mise-en-scène (2019); Image Keepers (2010); and Mother Tongue (2002). These films all carry key concepts in the artist’s practice as they illustrate the complexities of migration\, memory\, and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge.

SUMMARY:Mariana Oushiro: The Higher We Soar
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition by the Japanese-Brazilian artist marks the culmination of her V-Residency programme at Volery\, during which Oushiro has developed a new body of work that (according the gallery) “pushes the boundaries of abstraction\, inviting the viewer into a dynamic exploration of movement\, perception\, and spatial depth”. \nOushiro’s practice is characterised by bold strokes of colour and geometric forms\, drawing from the expressive vibrancy of Brazilian art and the precision of Japanese aesthetics. The Higher We Soar is “an invitation to experience abstraction as a visceral\, multi-sensory language—one that speaks to both the intellect and intuition\, navigating the space between rigour and release\, stillness and motion”. \nTo 5 April.

SUMMARY:Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:Carl Orff’s choral crowdpleaser gets the full production from Dubai Singers & Orchestra – some 120 singers accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra. \nIt will be conducted by Dubai Singers’ Music Director Jennie Lee-Foster\, The performance will feature a trio of soloists: soprano Ana Kovacevic and tenor Charles McGlone (both local) plus bass James Atkinson\, flying in specially from the UK. Dubai Singers will also be joined by members of the Abu Dhabi-based Al Khabairat Choral Society. \nCamena Burana is an exciting work musically\, percussive and highly rhythmical. Its background is interesting too; the cantata is based on a collection of Mediaeval poems and dramatic texts of the same name\, written (probably) by students\, clergy and young monks. Most of the pieces are irreverent and satirical\, some are very bawdy too. There are more than 250 in total\, but Carl Orff only picked a couple of dozen for his work. \nOrff actually expected performances of Carmena Burana to incorporate something else happening on the stage\, dance or theatre (or in some productions a kind of live painting session); that rarely happens these days\, though this time there will be a musical interlude featuring an ensemble from the Dubai Ballet Centre. \nDoors open at 6.30pm\, and there will be an iftar in the lobby area before the performance starts at 8pm.

SUMMARY:PowerPointless Networking Night
DESCRIPTION:One of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs is back after a couple of months’ hiatus: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team for mocktails (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\, with donations welcome; but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. SUMMARY:Perfect Days: dir Wim Wenders (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Writer-director Wim Wenders tells a Tokyo-set story that celebrates the hidden joys and minutiae of Japanese culture . Winner of Best Actor at Cannes 2023\, Koji Yakusho stars as Hirayama\, a contemplative middle-aged man who lives a life of modesty and serenity\, spending his days balancing his job as a dutiful caretaker of Tokyo’s numerous public toilets with his passion for music\, literature and photography; as we join him on his structured daily routine\, a series of unexpected encounters gradually begin to reveal a hidden past that lies behind his otherwise content and harmonious life. This is a subtle\, shimmering and ultimately life-affirming reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world around us.

SUMMARY:Emo de Meideros: Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – the Artist\, the Machine and the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:The Benininese artist\, often associated with afrofuturism\, considers how the AI revolution is opening up a new area of uncertainty in contemporary art: that of the complex triangulation between artist\, machine and mind. Is this a redefinition of the contours of creation? Is there opposition or complementarity between human creation and artificial logic? Control or abdication? Does the mind transcend algorithmic matter\, or does it risk losing itself in its own mechanized echoes? de Medeiros will introduce us to his work as an artist and thinker and question the stakes of new tools in contemporary creative processes. \nThis talk is given in English.

SUMMARY:Max Richter
DESCRIPTION:Max Richter\, a leading figure in contemporary classical music and top film scores (and something of a favourite with Dubai audiences)\, is touring his latest studio album In a Landscape – field recordings from his travels and from around the rural studio where he recorded the album\, some of which have been lauded by critics as among the most beautiful pieces in his catalogue. The concert\, which is being performed with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble\, also includes selected pieces from his much-praised 2004 album The Blue Notebooks to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s most peopular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Arooj Aftab
DESCRIPTION:The uber-cool Pakistani-American singer (and songwriter\, and producer) brings her latest – and very good – album Night Reign to Dubai. It’s elegantly jazzy\, earning a 2024 Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Jazz Album (she didn’t win: it was a very strong year); the Wall Street Journal said “[Night Reign’s] beauty is self-evident\, and it stands on its own”. Recommended\, even if it looks a little pricey (but tickets to Zabeel Theatre concerts do buy you a 20% discount on F&B at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray\, which might help soften the blow).

SUMMARY:Remote Al Ain by Rimini Protokoll
DESCRIPTION:Rimini Protokoll pushes the boundaries of conventional theatre. During this performance walk within the collective’s ‘Remote X’ series (2013–ongoing)\, you are invited to explore the growing presence of artificial intelligence in future cities; for this tour\, designed specifically for Al Ain\, you wear headphones (provided) and are guided by a computer-generated voice (in Arabic or English) into familiar and unfamiliar sites “that emerge as if from an imagined film”. \nThe starting point is Al Jahili Fort. \nThe Rimini Protokoll experience is remarkable and can be eye-opening; the collective has done Abu Dhabi a couple of times in the past\, as part of early Abu Dhabi Art extras\, and we’d heartily recommend the trip … \nThis is part of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. \nFuture dates: \n6 April\n13 April\n20 April\n27 April \n

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Nadine Ghandour: Rooms for Error
DESCRIPTION:Nadine Ghandour’s first solo exhibition in the UAE\, curated by Dawn Ross\, features recent works informed by her experiences in various cities\, including Dubai\, Sharjah\, Cairo and Rotterdam. Working with drawing\, writing\, performance and sculpture\, Ghandour creates works that depict imagined (and often farcical) situations set within cities\, exploring the impact of rapid urban development on those environments. “The fast-forward city gives rise to characters who are chronically uncertain”\, says the gallery\, “navigating and coexisting within these fragile architectures\, while constantly teetering on the brink of change or collapse”. \nTo 18 May.
