SUMMARY:Willow: dir Ron Howard (1988)
DESCRIPTION:Warwick Davis stars as Willow Ufgood in this Tolkien-ish family-friendly mix of fun\, fantasy and action; the diminutive Willow teams up with a wandering rogue swordsman (Val Kilmer) to protect a baby princess who has miraculously fallen into his care. It is foretold this baby girl will bring about the end of the rule of evil sorceress-queen Bavmorda (jean Marsh\, obviously having a lot of fun in the role) … A swashbuckling epic adventure with heart and soul\, and some brilliant special effects too.

SUMMARY:Gidion's Knot
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of a parent/teacher conference\, a grieving mother and an emotionally overwhelmed primary school teacher have a fraught conversation about the tragic suicide of the mother’s son. Gidion may have been bullied – or he may have been an abuser … \nAs his story is slowly uncovered\, the women try to reconstruct a satisfying explanation for Gidion’s act as they come to terms with their own feelings of culpability and the roles of the school system and parents in the development of children. \nThe title of this powerful two-hander by Johanna Adams is a punning reference to the Gordian Knot that Alexander the Great famously cut with a sword instead of untying like so many before him had tried but failed to do. The knot that remains tied is the play’s unanswered puzzle: what drove Gidion to suicide? What was he really like? \nOsman Aboubakr directs Eliane Germanos and Caroline Hamrén. There are further performances on 8 and 9 February at 2pm and 8pm both days. \n

SUMMARY:Sharjah Biennial 16 opening programme
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Alia Swastika\, Amal Khalaf\, Megan Tamati-Quennell\, Natasha Ginwala and Zeynep Öz\, Sharjah Biennial 16 features works by more than 190 participants\, including over 200 new commissions. \nThe SB16 Opening Programme weekend\, which runs at locations in Sharjah City\, Al Hamriyah\, Al Dhaid\, Kalba\, Al Madam and other venues across Sharjah\, will give us a chance to see how the curators have approached their theme – ‘to carry’. That’s described as “a multivocal and open-ended proposition … The ever-expanding list of what to carry\, and how to carry it\, is an invitation to encounter the different formations and positions of the five curators as well as the constellation of resonances they have gathered”.  What do we carry when it is time to travel\, flee or move on? What are the passages that we form as we migrate between territories and across time? What do we carry when we remain? What do we carry when we survive? \nSo sB16 curatorial projects reflect on what it means to carry change and its technological\, societal\, animistic or ritualistic possibilities. “As carriers of different processes and offerings\, the curators have cultivated their projects together and apart\, allowing room for listening\, mutual support and the sharing of resources.” \nSB16 runs to 15 June. SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s most peopular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mary Gatchell
DESCRIPTION:Accolades like “accomplished singer/songwriter” and “talented musician” are bandied about all too easily; Mary Gatchell really does seem to deserve them. Here’s a partial CV: A graduate of NYU with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Theory and Composition and a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Performance in Jazz Piano\, she has performed in small clubs and large stadiums\, in solo shows and with the groups that she’s in – like NYC’s premiere a cappella choir\, Ghostlight Chorus\, and the New Orleans southern funk bank Strangeland. \nShe’s a member of the Leon Lacey Orchestra of which she has been principal oboist; she’s also played principal oboe with the New York Chamber Players. Mary was the co-founder and artistic director of the Italian chamber music festival Siena Summer Music\, held from 2008 to 2016\,;and in 2023 her classical composition Paradiso Canto 33\, setting Dante’s text to music for a cappella choir\, was premiered in Siena. \nMary is a choreographer and musical director as well (for productions of West Side Story\, The Wiz\, Jesus Christ Superstar\, and Dreamgirls among others). She is currently a rehearsal pianist and substitute conductor for the Broadway hit\, Six The Musical. \nShe’s a music teacher too; she’s a visiting lecturer at NYU\, she has implemented a sustainable music curriculum for HIV-infected and impoverished children in Ethiopia\, and she has taught music to orphans with special needs in Bulgaria. \nAnd she’s a recording artist\, of course\, with seven albums of her original music plus three albums of hymns and spirituals\, a Christmas album\, and an album of jazz standards. \nMary’s imminent 13th album\, What’s My Name? Destiny\, sets music to a collection of love poems from such as Rabia of Basra\, Rumi\, Hafiz\, St Catherine of Siena\, and Farouk Henry. It’s this music that she will be performing at NYUAD. Especially given that tickets are complimentary\, this is a concert not to be missed …

SUMMARY:Cascadeuses | Stuntwomen: dir Elena Avdija (2022)
DESCRIPTION:“Cinema has a fascination with sexist violence. We like to see women suffer\, getting kidnapped or raped\,” said Avdija in a Variety interview. These are the scenes the stuntwomen protagonists of her telling documentary – Virginie Arnaud\, Petra Sprecher and Estelle Piget – are usually asked to portray. The film questions how cinema and television distribute roles and violence on the screen; “There will always be work for stuntwomen\, because there will always be stories about women getting hurt”. \nThis film screens as part of the NAAS Film Programme: She-Reel. SUMMARY:Eltiqa: How to Work Together?
DESCRIPTION:More 100 artworks by the Palestinian artist collective Eltiqa\, \nEltiqa (Arabic for “encounter”) is an artist collective from Gaza City founded in 2000. Eltiqa members have developed artistic practices together – including the setting up of a dedicated exhibition and workshop space in Gaza City\, and supporting younger generations of artists through workshops\, exhibitions and by offering a space to meet and dialogue. Eltiqa: How to Work Together? includes a selection of Eltiqa’s artworks spanning several years of collaboration. The works on display were collected from various locations worldwide; some artworks produced and exhibited years ago remained with institutions and individuals because of the difficulty of returning them to Gaza\, other works were transported out of Gaza during the ongoing genocide. \nIncluded in the exhibition is an annotated timeline that traces the history of Eltiqa – the collective’s formation and early days\, their efforts at creating structures of support for themselves and others\, and the historical\, political and personal events that have marked their lives as a collective and as individuals. Through anecdotes recounted by members of Eltiqa and research conducted by The Question of Funding collective\, the displayed narratives accentuate Eltiqa’s practice and survival amid political\, social\, economic and personal distress. \nThe exhibition opens with an evening of conversations on 5 Fenruary from 6pm to 7.30pm\, begining with a panel of Eltiqa members Dina Matar\, Mohammed Al-Hawajri and Mohamed Abusal in conversation with exhibition curator Yazan Khalili discussing Eltiqa’s early days and its role within the arts ecology of Gaza. \nFollowing this\, Yazan Khalili and Mohammad Abusal will be in conversation with Dr Martin Heller around cultivating support networks for artists\, in the framework of the Lumbung Gallery Collective\, set up to support artists following documenta (15). \nThe exhibition runs to 20 July.

SUMMARY:Hoda Tawakol: My Mothers – The Siren\, The Vessel\, The Womb
DESCRIPTION:Through film\, photography\, and sculpture\, Tawakol reclaims the female body as a site of creation and resistance\, reflecting on motherhood and the complex layers of identity. This exhibition’s centrepiece is a three-channel video made from stitched Super-8 film fragments (1960s–1980s) which portray three maternal figures: Tawakol’s mother\, Honey\, her grandmother\, Toutou\, and her nanny\, Hosneia. Each channel reveals intimate narratives\, from Honey’s complex personality to Toutou’s pivotal role in raising Tawakol and Hosneia’s nurturing presence. \nIn the series Fragments of Return (2024–25)\, black-and-white photographs from the artist’s family archives were manipulated by incisions backed with vibrant\, almost metallic-gleam colours\, and tattoo-like interventions. Studio portraits or holiday snaps are overlaid with snake\, shell\, or flower motifs\, exploring identity and resistance. Sculptural works like Lure (2024) and Nude (2025) reference femininity\, fertility\, and control; Hair (2011-14) and Warrior (2010) redefine hair as a symbol of strength and defiance. \nTo  28 March. \nAbove: My Mothers (2025\, still from three-channel video) \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Nour Malas: Evil is Banal
DESCRIPTION:Nour Malas’ solo exhibition starts with Hannah Arendt’s quote about the Nazis’ unconscionable acts of genocide: they were not exceptional but part of a wider belief that estimated some human lives as disposable. For Malas\, displacement upheaves feelings of belonging; this unsettling becomes one’s condition\, not merely an effect. When home is an ambiguous place\, the desire for consistency carries reassurance even as one remains aware of the cracks in this elusive safety. Her work traverses the physical and emotional landscapes of worlds increasingly marked by pervasive violence. The artist layers paint\, blurring the distinction between abstraction and the presence of figures; she uses a palette of colours she associates both with the materiality of the body and responses of alarm or anxiety\, manifestations of psycho-social reactions. \nTo 5 April. \nAbove: Nour Malas\, Evil is Banal (2024)

SUMMARY:Shama Al Hamed: I Jump - Will I Stick the Landing?
DESCRIPTION:This first solo show by Shama Al Hamed\, curated by Walter Williems\, features a collection of paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that offers insight into the formative experiences and emotions that have shaped the artist’s creative practice and artistic perspective. \nSays the gallery: “Shama uses the metaphor of jumping as a symbol of movement – through time\, memory\, and emotion. Each leap becomes a reflection of her ongoing efforts to navigate and transcend the spaces that define her\, whether driven by joy\, individuality\, or quiet defiance”. \nA recurring theme in her work is the integration of architectural patterns\, derived from photographs of buildings that framed her childhood. These designs\, transformed through repetition and abstraction\, evoke defining memories and the influence of physical spaces on her creative vision. \nTo 5 April. \nAbove: Shama Al Hamed\, Quiet (2023)

SUMMARY:Seher Shah: Of Dust and Woven Air
DESCRIPTION:Shah draws inspiration from Agha Shahid Ali’s poem\, The Dacca Gauzes – “Those transparent Dacca gauzes / known as woven air\, running / water\, evening dew: / a dead art now\, dead over / a hundred years”. Says the artist: “There is an unknown quality that materials hold by weaving histories and cultures speaking to each other. I thought of this material resonance when I first read Agha Shahid Ali’s poem\, … His words evoked memories of my maternal family and the cities they inhabited; a cartography between the real and imaginedOf Dust and Woven Air are studies into absence and memory through drawing\, printmaking and poetry. A poetry of loss and erasure revealed in line\, form and materiality on paper. Working with dust and its accumulations\, I draw on Bengal muslin (gauze)\, the ethereal cloth of Agha Shahid Ali’s poem …” To 5 April.

SUMMARY:Athar Jaber: Vestiges
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for an artist only recently signed by Ayyam Gallery. This large body of work\, an exploration of the fragile relationship between the human form and the forces that shape it\, re-imagines the human form as figures that transcend mere physical disfigurement to serve as symbolic representations of how individuals are torn apart by the weight of the world. Athar’s sculptures embody an ideal of beauty\, but their fractured state suggests that this is in fact an illusion.\nThe artist statement speaks of human forms that emerge and recede – “fragmented\, eroded\, and incomplete\, yet alive … They appear as remnants of something once whole\, as though time has worn away at them … In the absence of features\, the viewer is invited to project their own reflections of memory\, identity\, and impermanence. \nTo 1 April. \nAbove: Athar Jaber\, Marble Head – Opus 5 nr.2 (2015)
