SUMMARY:Vikram Divecha: Short Circuits
DESCRIPTION:Vikram Divecha’s exhibition covers the Dubai-based artist’s practice since 2013\, showcasing his playful and poetic site-specific works\, public art\, installations\, videos\, photography and drawings. In particular\, Divecha has long had an in-depth interest in the invisible structures of planning\, construction\, demolition and maintenance that shape the cities of the UAE and beyond; it’s this creative obsession that informs most of his work. \nCurated by Art Jameel’s Dawn Ross\, Head of Collections\, and Lucas Morin\, Curator\, the exhibition includes works from the Art Jameel Collection\, local and international loans\, and new commissions.  This is one exhibition we’re really looking forward to\, and it’s good that it is getting such a long run. \nTo 16 June. \nAbove: Vikram Divecha\, Fee Transfer (2017) \n

SUMMARY:Roma città aperta | Rome Open City: dir Roberto Rossellini (1945)
DESCRIPTION:This harrowing drama about the Nazi occupation of Rome was shockingly authentic\, conceived and directed amidst the ruin of World War II. The result has been cited as one of the greatest films ever made; certainly it’s a landmark of Italian neorealism\, an important stepping stone for Italian filmmaking as a whole\, and the launchpad for Rossellini\, his principal screenwriter Federico Fellini\, and his lead actress Anna Magnani. A genuine landmark in cinema art. \n

SUMMARY:Rahu
DESCRIPTION:An adaptation of Kurosawa’s Rashomon transposed to Punjab (and delivered in Punjabi\, with English subtitles). A man is found dead and his wife abused; a bandit confesses\, but the wife’s story is different – and the dead man himself has another story to tell … “The drama heightens as the characters navigate a world painted with shadows and uncertainty”. \nThe adaptor and director of the show\, Shah Fahad\, promises “the flavour of historic drama woven through innovative story-telling\, hard hitting dialogue and performances that will leave [the audience] with an everlasting impact”. The show is one of two collaborations between DramaED Productions\, Dubai’s own Tall Tales Production\, and The Junction – the other play is Ketu\, based on 12 Angry Men and showing on 2 February. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ras Al Khaimah Art
DESCRIPTION:Ras Al Khaimah Art\, the new incarnation of the Ras Al Khaimah Fine Art Festival\, opens to the public at 9pm on Friday 2 February. As ever\, it’s at the Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village\, which has increasingly been developed with houses holding exhibition and meeting spaces for the festival. \nThe festival is curated by the award-winning Swiss photographer and artistic director Alfio Tommasini with them ‘In Motion’. Tommasini’s curatorial statement speaks of the 2024 Festival seamlessly integrating “motion\, culture\, and perception”. Elsewhere he writes: “Amidst this evolving scene\, movement becomes an opportunity to discover new cultures\, reconnect with forgotten histories\, and celebrate uniqueness. This Festival unveils more than art – it reveals a story flourishing in this remarkable place\, a testament to our human journey.” \nThat is symbolised by Ephemeral Whispers (above)\, a kinetic art installation on the tower of Al Jazeera Al Hamra Fort; this speaks of unity\, but also suggests the dynamic nature of human interaction. It’s a fabric-based work that uses traditional and contemporary materials from several cultures\, suspended like tapestries and serving as a visual metaphor for the marketplaces that throughout history have provided a rich heritage of human experience. \nThis is also echoed in The Souq\, an international contemporary art exhibition that aims to explore the human experience – “our interactions\, movements\, and existence on Earth … Delving into gender\, culture\, and spirituality\, it aims to transport visitors on a profound ‘Human Condition’ tour\, encapsulating the highs and lows of our earthly journey”. \nThe main exhibitions are in the houses of Al Jazeera Al Hamra\, the bayts. There are nine housing the open call exhibits – photography\, 2D art and sculptures from around three dozen artists. In addition\, seven of the bayts will be showing special exhibitions – one of which is for the Festival’s artist in residence\, the Chilean-born multimedia artist Indira Urrutia Zuniga. \nThe US Mission to the UAE is taking another of the houses for guest artist Kim Carolino\, whose exhibition Possible Forms is described as “a meditation on the expansion and contraction of time while moving forward through a linear construction of reality”. The Foundation of the Croatian collector and psilanthropist Marinko Sudac has two bayts\, one for the 3D paintings of Radomir Damnjanovic Damnjan and the other for the “arte programmata” of Italian artists Lucia di Luciano and Giovanni Pizzo. \nBayt 5 has the interesting sounding Pearls of Motion\, an AR exhibition by W3rlds Metaverse that “weaves a narrative of movement\, seamlessly blending the rich heritage of the region with contemporary digital art”. And Daniel Rode’s installation in Bay 6\, for the German Embassy and Goethe Institut\, highlights the beauty of the present in his exhibition Erstmal bin ich hier (For Now I am Here); concealing letters in a foreign language\, Rode’s work creates a deliberate barrier between it and the viewer that the artist sees as a fertile field for interpretation around “the profound beauty of the ordinary”. \nAs well the curated exhibitions\, the 12th edition of the festival will also host a variety of workshops\, from wire knitting and resin ocean art to photography and ceramics; Live Performance Saturdays with music and stand-up comedy; a programme of six talks on culture\, innovation\, and sustainability subjects; and Friday Film Nights featuring documentary and fiction shorts. \nThe RAK Art Festival has always been distinguished by its themed weekends with hands-on activities\, workshops and performances – a Pet-Friendly Weekend on 9-11 February\, the Family & Community Weekend on 16-18 February\, and the Cultural Weekend for traditional activities and crafts on 23-25 February. \nThe festival site is free to enter and is open 10am to 11.30pm from 2 to 29 February. \n

DESCRIPTION:An adaptation of Sidney Lumet’s courtroom drama 12 Angry Men\, transposed to Punjab in the 1890s (and delivered in Punjabi\, with English subtitles). The members of a jury deliberate a guilty verdict that means death for the accused; one of them casts doubt on key elements of the case … “This gripping narrative in a charged courtroom\, explores themes of justice\, morality and the relentless pursuit of the truth”. \nThe show is the second of two collaborations between DramaED Productions\, Dubai’s own Tall Tales Production\, and The Junction – the other was Rahu on 1 February. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Judit Böröcz\, Bence György Pálinkás and Máté Szigeti: Singing Youth
DESCRIPTION:The original Singing Youth is a larger-than-life memorial statue of three young people by Greek sculptor Memos Makris\, a political refugee in Hungary. In 1953\, the statue was installed in front of a sports stadium in Budapest; it still stands there today\, having survived the collapse of communism and later the demolition of the stadium and the construction of a replacement. \nIn this a cappella performance\, also titled Singing Youth\, a theatre maker\, visual artist and composer team up to bring the sculpture to life. Composed of excerpts from newspaper articles\, interviews and statements made by politicians over the years\, the lyrics present the sculpture as a witness to political upheaval\, current affairs and the use of arts and sports for political ends. \nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Everyday Life in the Spectacular City – Making Home in Dubai
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel is running a third season of Night School\, a seminar programme where UAE residents can discuss urbanism and history in Dubai. Under this season’s theme\, There You Are\, participants will assess how much we can know about a place just by taking a good look around. The seminar itself is fully booked\, but there are three public events in Art Jameel’s lobby; this is one of them. \nDr Rana AlMutawa from NYUAD introduces her new book in a discussion with Neha Vora sbout how scholars develop honed senses of sight and hearing. The book shows how Dubai’s inhabitants adapt themselves to top-down development projects\, from big malls to megaprojects\, to find “a more nuanced story of belonging”\, and sounds genuinely fascinating.

SUMMARY:The Gold Rush: dir Charles Chaplin (1925)
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Chaplin’s tramp goes looking for gold and fortune in the Klondike\, gets mixed up with some burly characters\, falls in love with the beautiful Georgia (Georgia Hale) and tries to win her heart … It’s the now-familiar mix\, but none the worse for that; and some of the gags are just brilliant. This is reputedly the film that Chaplin most wanted to be remembered for. \nThis Cinema Space presentation is a new restoration of the original silent film\, complete with a newly recorded orchestral score. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:A warm-hearted and thoughtful holiday story of three lonely\, shipwrecked people who find support in the most unlikely of places. A curmudgeonly teacher (Paul Giamatti) is forced to remain on campus at a New England prep school over Christmas to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go; as the days pass\, the grumpy prof forms an unexpected bond with smart-but-troubled student Angus (Dominic Sessa) and the school’s head cook Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph). SUMMARY:Sharjah Light Festival
DESCRIPTION:Regular readers will know that magpie has always been a fan of the Sharjah Light Festival\, the 13th edition of which runs 7 to 18 February. SLF is being joined by two more light festivals that have emerged in the UAE over the last few months – Manar Abu Dhabi\, which runs to the end of the month\, and Dhai Dubai Light Art Festival at Expo City Dubai from 26 January to 4 February. \nThey both look like becoming exceptional additions to the calendar\, but they are very different constructions to SLF. Their artworks in the Dubai and Abu Dhabi installations stand alone\, even when they are site-specific. By contrast\, the Sharjah Light Festival generally takes a more conventional approach – the kind of thing we’re familiar with from some of the European city light festivals\, which typically means illuminating iconic cultural (and some natural) landmarks. \nThis year’s Sharjah Light Festival features light shows crafted by around 15 international artists in a dozen locations – three of them new to the schedule this year: Kalba Waterfront\, the General Directorate of Sharjah Police\, and the General Souq at Al Hamriyah. They join Khalid Lagoon\, Al Majaz Waterfront\, BEEAH Group Headquarters\, Al Dhaid Fort\, Sharjah Mosque\, Sheikh Rashid Al Qasimi Mosque\, Al Noor Mosque\, and Al Rafisah Dam. \nThere’s also the Light Village in front of the University City Hall building\, which will have around 55 F&B and retail vendors plus entertainment and activities. That opens from 1 February. \n

SUMMARY:Ökozid | Ecocide: dir Andres Veiel (2020)
DESCRIPTION:ÖKOZID / ECOCIDE\nDirector: Andres Veiel\nFeature\, Germany\, 2020\, 90 min. \nStarring Nina Kunzendorf\, Friederike Becht\, Edgar Selge and Ulrich Tukur \nFebruary 7\, 2024 @ 7pm\, at Manarat Al Saadiyat \nIt is the year 2034 and drought and flooding are destroying the livelihoods of millions of people. The International Court of Justice has had to evacuate to Berlin\, where the climate catastrophe is the subject of legal proceedings. Two lawyers are representing 31 countries of the Global South\, which are doomed without the support of the international community; they raise the question of responsibility\, demanding compensation and a right to the integrity of nature in order to ensure their own survival. The court must decide whether German politicians will be held accountable for their failure to protect the climate and thus set a precedent … Andres Veiel has designed a meticulously researched setting\, and the facts of present events make this film a bold\, effective and prescient work of art. \nThis film is screened as part of the NAAS film programme\, a collaboration by several cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the French and Canadian Embassies\, the Italian Cultural Institute\, and Manarat Al Saadiyat.

SUMMARY:Aakash Odedra & Aditi Mangaldas: Mehek
DESCRIPTION:The world premiere of a new dance piece\, devised and performed by two of the pre-eminent South Asian dancers of their time – Aakash Odedra\, well known to Abu Dhabi audiences from previous visits; and Aditi Mangaldas\, a dancer and choreographer long recognised both for her skill and for bringing a contemporary evolution to Kathak dance. \nDerived from the Hindi word for fragrance\, the title Mehek alludes to the enduring power of memory and the essence of love itself. Aditi Mangaldas\, dancing the first ever duet of her 50-year career\, and Aakash Odedra weave a narrative that celebrates love in all its forms: raw\, authentic\, and infinitely resonant. \nMehek is described as “an enchanting exploration of the human heart\, its desires\, courage\, and resilience\, masterfully brought to life”; the piece gives a voice to a story that is often regarded as contentious\, love between a mature woman and a younger man. The stage transforms into a canvas where rhythmic tales of desire unfold\, entwined with the elements of nature; the use of mirrors in the set literally reflects the duality of a tranquil surface above and the tumultuous waves beneath. \nMehek is at The Arts Center for two performances\, with a second show on 8 February. As part of its Off the Stage series\, The Arts Center will also be hosting a dance workshop with Aakash Odedra on 9 February at 6.30pm; request an invitation here. \nMehek is created by Aakash Odedra Company and Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company / The Drishtikon Dance Foundation\, and is presented with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels. It was co-commissioned by The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi Sadler’s Wells; The Lowry\, Salford; Birmingham Hippodrome; and the Bagri Foundation. \nmagpie interviewed Aakash Odedra in advance of the performance; read the feature here. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n

SUMMARY:André Butzer: Becoming Matisse
DESCRIPTION:A solo show from one of Carbon 12’s regulars. Butzer’s style is characterised by “Disney figures painted by Munch”: iconic characters\, expressive language\, deceptively careful use of colour\, all done in “in honour of Henri Matisse” says the artrist. “Simultaneously offering intro- and extrospection\, contemplation and avoidance\, Butzer’s painting is embedded in his methodical and investigative nature toward basic humanity as its incorruptible leitmotif” says the artist. \nTo 30 March. \nAbove: André Butzer\, Untitled (2023)

SUMMARY:Le Dîner de Cons
DESCRIPTION:Francis Veber’s highly successful modern French farce gets the Culture Emulsion treatment. Pierre Brochant is one of the Parisian businessmen who have a weekly ‘idiots’ dinner’\, where guests bring along a dimwit who can be ridiculed. Brochant finds an excellent candidate in François Pignon\, but well before the dinner things start to go wrong when the businessman finds himself getting more and more involved with the gaffe-prone walking disaster Pignon as Brochant tries to make it up with his estranged wife … There are phantom mistresses\, unlikely offstage car accidents\, a tax inspector\, and misunderstandings and mistakes by the tonne. And of course it’s in French. \nThere are further performances on 9 February and again on 21\, 22 and 23 February. \n  \n
