SUMMARY:Radouan Mriziga: Libya
DESCRIPTION:In Libya\, Radouan Mriziga collaborates with dancers to elaborate on transgenerational shared histories and epistemologies from an Amazigh perspective\, where the memories of the body play a pivotal role (the Amazighs are the indigenous inhabitants of the North African littoral\, isolated from the rest of Africa by the Sahara). North African music\, dance\, landscapes and cave paintings depicting prehistoric dance moves are among the interconnected elements that inform a complex choreographic adventure. Layers of meaning are uncovered before us\, drawing the features of an imagined\, shared future from an Amazigh point of view. \nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which runs from October 2023 to February 2024\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n

SUMMARY:Candlelight: Beethoven's Best Works
DESCRIPTION:The title of this concert certainly sets the bar high\, though it seems a pretty good selection of the composer’s works for piano. The pianist is Magdalena Wajdzik\, and the other plus is the way these recitals are lit by candlelight. The programme last around 65 minutes: \n♦ Piano Sonata op.13 ‘Pathetique’ – 1st\, 2nd and 3rd movements\n♦ ‘Für Elise’ (Bagatelle no.25 in A minor)\n♦ Piano Sonata No.17 op.31 (The Tempest) – 1st and 3rd movement\n♦ Piano Sonata op. 27 No.2 (Moonlight) – 1st\, 2nd and 3rd movements\n♦ ‘An die Freude’ (aka Ode to Joy – transcr. Liszt) \nThe programme lasts about 65 minutes; there are performances at 5pm\, 7pm and 9pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Firdaus Orchestra’s Mini Maestros
DESCRIPTION:An introduction to music generally and the orchestra in particular by Expo City Dubai’s all-female Firdaus Orchestra via a concert of classically arranged music for children aged 0 to 6 years old and their parents. The programme includes a range of music\, with arrangements of classic children’s songs plus popular Disney numbers; it’s described as “an immersive and educational musical journey” in an “interactive musical environment”. \nMonica Woodman\, conductor of the Firdaus Orchestra\, is quoted as saying: “the significance of classical music in children’s cognitive development cannot be overstated. Classical music ignites creativity and activates areas of the brain not typically stimulated by other music genres … Mini Maestros will offer a truly unique opportunity for children and their parents to interact with live music”. \nIt sounds great\, though the ticket price (AED 495 for one child and one adult) is surely going to restrict its appeal …

SUMMARY:Rayyane Tabet: The Return
DESCRIPTION:This performance piece traces the 50-year journey of a marble sculpture depicting a bull’s head\, using interviews as well as inventory lists\, photographs\, legal documents and other evidence presented to the New York Supreme Court from investigations that lasted for years. Eventually restituted to Lebanon\, the sculpture is now on display at the National Museum in Beirut. \nThere are performances on 27 and 28 January. \nOriginally scheduled for last Autumn and postponed in sympathy with the plight of Gaza\, this is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Shane Todd: MUMMY
DESCRIPTION:The reliably funny Northern Irish comic is currently touring his new standup show – from here he zips over to Australia and New Zealand\, then to mainland Europe for a few more dates\, all before the end of March … He’s arguably the funniest man in Belfast and probably hasn’t had the exposure he deserves. Well worth catching (especially if he resurrects his Stormont election candidates\, the smarmy Mike McGoldrick and the uber-creepy Alistair Maxwell). \n

SUMMARY:Le Petit Prince
DESCRIPTION:Two final performances for this spectacular dance/circus interpretation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s fable of an aviator who lands in the middle of the desert and meets the Little Prince\, who’s travelling from one planet to another looking for his sheep. We’re told that this production “weaves together narrative\, emotion\, and movement\, exploring profound themes of love\, friendship\, and the essence of the human experience”\, and if it’s essentially the same one that wowed Dubai in 2020 we can recommend it enthusiastically … \nThere are performances at 3pm and 7pm. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Beauty and the Beast: dir Gary Trousdale\, Kirk Wise (1991)
DESCRIPTION:A newly restored print of Disney’s family-friendly animation: the beast (an enchanted prince\, of course) tries to win the love of the young and beautiful Belle with the help of the caste’s enchanted staff (who have been transformed into a fetching collection of utensils and tableware). Great script\, good songs\, a tale as old as time\, and another fine free pick from the Cinema Space programmers. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Karama Arts Club: In the UAE Frame – Photography
DESCRIPTION:The intelligent networking session for creative peers continues its ‘Arts Unfiltered’ panel series\, this time delving into photography in the UAE. “We aim to cover a broad range of topics\, then open up to the floor to hear your questions … whether you’re an established UAE photographer\, a passionate hobbyist\, or someone simply curious about picking up a camera”. \nThe panel session starts around 7.30\, with a private bar from 5.30. \nAccess to the Club’s evenings is free\, sort of\, but (a) you have to be a member … and membership is free\, too\, but you have to be nominated by an existing club member since this “ensures the sound\, organic growth of a trusted community”; and (b) the venue requires a minimum F&B spend in advance. These packages start at AED 50 for an alcoholic drink\, AED 60 for three non-alcoholic; food will be available. \n

SUMMARY:Past Lives: dir Celine Song (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Celine Song’s first feature has been nominated in two of this year’s Oscar categories (Best Motion Picture category and Best Original Screenplay – but criminally not Best Director). It’s the story of a modern romance; Na Young’s family emigrated from Seoul to Canada when she was 12\, she lost touch with her childhood sweetheart Hae Sung\, and a decade later they find each other again … \nPast Lives is a deeply romantic love story that also embraces destiny\, nostalgia and the immigrant experience. The result is a masterclass in how you have to make a story specific for it to be universal. It’s also (almost incidentally) a portrait of a very specific form of masculinity\, one that’s about decency\, selflessness\, understanding and fear – not something you see very often\, and perhaps a portrait that could only have been realised by a woman. \n“A divine cinematic experience; this is what we go to the movies for” says Cinema Space\, which has programmed this brilliantly realised film for us at no charge. \nVery highly recommended \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
