SUMMARY:Singin’ in the Rain
DESCRIPTION:The highly successful stage adaptation of the iconic MGM film about silent film actors who face their share of struggles over the gradual transition to talkies. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ayesha Sultana: Fragility and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The first major solo show in the GCC for the Bangladesh-born US-based artist. Her practice spans drawing\, painting and sculpture\, “exploring the material and conceptual possibilities of form and medium … Sultana proposes that fragility can be a form of strength while encompassing profound vulnerability. This thematic exploration is particularly pertinent in the contemporary world as social\, ecological and personal upheavals continually test the limits of sustainability”. \nThe exhibition has new oil paintings\, watercolours on Japanese silk tissue\, works on clay-coated paper\, hand-blown glass sculptures\, and some past photographic explorations. Interestingly\, there’s also a hint of the creative process through the inclusion of sketchbooks\, diaries\, in-progress artworks and an unfinished video. This kind of soul-baring is all too rare in conventional gallery shows; sometimes it can get in the way of the works themselves\, but obviously there will be occasions when the artist (and/or the gallerist) understands that it might provide additional insights. As the blurb puts it\, these additions “reveal the meticulous planning\, experimentation and emotional investment underlying each finished piece\, highlighting the fragility and resilience inherent in all creative acts … The exhibition reflects the fluidity and openness that characterise Sultana’s approach to art\, allowing viewers to witness the raw\, unpolished stages of her creative journey” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jazz At The Island: Aleksandra Krstic / Tania Kassis
DESCRIPTION:Jazz under the stars on Sharjah’s Al Noor Island – though again we’re not sure either artist would regard themselves as characteristic of (or confined to) the jazz genre. The Dubai-based Serbian singer\, songwriter\, pianist and composer Aleksandra Krstic has performed in a classical\, jazz\, funk\, soul and pop styles\, both solo and in bands; she’s also worked as a recording artist with jazz and electronic music artists. She has a nice sultry voice for self-accompanied Ella Fitzgerald style jazz. The award-winning Lebanese singer Tania Kassis (above) has won acclaim for her powerful soprano and crossover jazz-tinged Arabic melodies (check out our her Live at l’Olympia disc to get some idea of her range and capabilities\, especially the lovely ‘Islamo Christian Ave’). \nThe schedule: \n4-5.30pm Tour of the island and the Butterfly House\n6-6.40pm Jazz piano workshop with Rami Atallah (included in the ticket price\, we think\, but first come first served)\n7-8.30pm Interval for dinner\n8.30-9.30pm Aleksandra Krstic\n9.30-10.30pm Tania Kassis \nThe AED 100 ticket price buys you entry to the music\, but there’s also a 250 AED option which includes dinner before the main acts.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Steven Naifeh: Found in Translation
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in Abu Dhabi in 50 years of works by Steven Naifeh\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, businessman and artist – particularly of large-scale geometric abstractions that owe much to hos appreciation of geometric art in the Middle East. \nNaifeh\, whose family is of Arab origin though his parents were US diplomats\, grew up in the Middle East\, Africa\, and South Asia before pursuing art history at both Princeton and Harvard. His practice is closely tied to his family’s experience in the UAE and his exposure to Islamic art; Naifeh’s large works reference the glorious Middle Eastern geometric heritage\, while integrating the newer traditions of geometric abstraction of Europe and America from Kazimir Malevich to Sol Lewitt. The result is a body of work that is both physically imposing and intricately wrought. In both paintings and sculptures\, Naifeh takes specific precedents from millennium-old Islamic and Arab prototypes that were inspired by mathematical principles\, removes them from their temporal and material context\, and reimagines them in the world of twentieth-century international art.

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mezzotono
DESCRIPTION:A Mezzotono concert is always engaging\, always interesting. They describe themselves as a small orchestra without instruments – just five voices\, quality singing\, and a unique style which blends vocal harmonies\, beatboxing\, and vocal percussion. They aim to cover many music styles with Italian and dialect songs (they’re Italian) from jazz to pop via mambo\, tango\, folk music\, big band jazz and classical – and all a capella. The genial stage presence is another plus\, and this is a show that should really suit the Cultural Foundation’s outdoor amphitheatre very well. Recommended\, especially at this price.

SUMMARY:Compagnie Nacera Belaza: La Nuée
DESCRIPTION:The title of this dance piece by Nacera Belaza holds two meanings in French: a dark cloud and a dense flock of birds. She developed the performance following a research visit to the First Nation Dakota tribes in North America; she was struck by the communal festive rituals\, where participants from different communities danced individually and collectively to an ascending rhythm. For La Nuée\, ten dancers move in a pitch-dark space in a performance that unfolds like a painting being drawn on a black canvas; the successive moving tableaux become visible under very precise jets of light that appear and disappear in tandem with the rhythm of a distinctive and singular soundtrack. \nThis performance is La Nuée‘s Arab world premiere; Belaza has seven professional dancers from her own company plus three SPAA students for this special version of the piece\, which is part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme.

SUMMARY:Theatresports: Santas vs Elves 1
DESCRIPTION:A newish Courtyard tradition: competitive improv. In Theatresports\, teams of improvisors are selected to compete against each other for points awarded by a panel of judges. The teams issue challenges to each other on the seasonal theme\, and the judges are looking for how well the improvisors react (usually in terms of narrative\, technique\, and entertainment – judges can hand out warnings or penalties for being boring). One team will get to win the coveted Theatresports trophy … \nIt’s great fun\, and it’s free. You need to put your name down on the webpage’s guestlist\, though\, and turn up early because the RSVP doesn’t guarantee you a seat. \nThere’s a second Theatresports Special on 11 December.

SUMMARY:Singin’ in the Rain
DESCRIPTION:The highly successful stage adaptation of the iconic MGM film about silent film actors who face their share of struggles over the gradual transition to talkies. The plot isn’t what matters\, of course; it’s the songs – classics like Good Morning\, Make ’em Laugh\, Moses Supposes\, and of course Singin’ in the Rain – and the dancing (the choreography by Andrew Wright is just great). There will also be live rain showers on stage every night … The result is a celebration of Hollywood’s golden era with romance\, humour and wall-to-wall entertainment. \nThere are further shows to 14 December: \n\n\n11 Dec 8pm\n12 Dec 8pm\n13 Dec 8pm\n14 Dec 2pm\n14 Dec 8pm
