DESCRIPTION:Augustine Paredes’ artist’s room brings together his own personal histories and stories that explore his relationship to identity and family via his personal journey as a migrant\, navigating constantly between time\, places and identities. Gradually moving away from the camera as a main source of image-making\, he has embraced a more process-based approach that focuses on the inherent qualities and agency of materials used within his work. \nThe exhibition’s central work is Mother – a portrait of Marife\, an all-important figure in his life and one that embodies his connection to home and sense of belonging. Other works present traces of burns\, verses of poems\, paintings\, ink stains\, fibres\, pearls and wool threads. Together\, these works explore the artist’s reflections on guilt\, desire and devotion.

DESCRIPTION:The final day of the 16th edition of Abu Dhabi Art. It has five principal sectors: \nModern & Contemporary: for established galleries (who have been operating for at least seven years) with curatorial framework for booth presentations. This is the main section\, with more than 30 galleries showing \nSpecial Projects: solo or dual artist presentations by individual galleries – we count 28 of these \nEmerge: for artworks priced under $3\,000 – nine participants this year \nBidaya: for emerging galleries (operating for less than three years) who are first-time participants. There are two exhibitors \nFocus: galleries invited to participate with specific artists chosen by a guest curator. There are Focus sectors for Hong Kong\, Latin America\, Women Artists and Sustainability (some very interesting selections here\, curated by Riccarda Mandrini) \nThis year there’s also a new regional section called Something Bold\, Something New; eight participating galleries – most of them regular participants in Abu Dhabi Art – will present works by modernist artists “whose practices and legacies are long overdue recognition and appreciation”. \nSilk Road; Drifting Identities is another new section\, this one for artists and galleries from Central Asia and the Caucasus. “These seem important debuts\, because they open long-forgotten discussions around the Silk Road\, which has come to represent a journey of self-discovery for travellers\, a search for identity\, and a time of metamorphosis”. \nThe Collectors Salon is perhaps the most interesting innovation. It’s described as a response to the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s lead in exploring connections between civilisations and cultures across time; so eight exhibitors will present manuscripts\, astrolabes\, historical objects\, rare books and 19th century Orientalist paintings.

DESCRIPTION:“This festival aims to strengthen the alternative music community as well as introduce new audiences to the underground sounds and creative vibrancy of Dubai” – it should be a groovy evening to celebrate the UAE’s nearest approach to an alternative subculture scene There will be DJ sets\, live performances (they’re cramming five stages into the Monkey Bar\, apparently)\, a film screening and panel chat\, marketplace pop-ups\, and “exclusive experiences”. \nIt runs 4pm till late (they’re aiming for 2am) and the ticket price includes one free drink (but confusingly there’s a free-entry option too: see this link). DESCRIPTION:Daniel Roby’s film has a Parisian couple whose daughter suffers from an incurable disease that forces her to live in a hermetically sealed glass bubble. Then a mysterious toxic fog begins to spread in the Parisian streets\, killing anyone who gets caught in it. The parents find shelter on the roof above the mist\, but the daughter is still in her bubble in the now fog-filled apartment … Her parents must now cope with the lack of food\, power\, and information\, but the bubble won’t hold forever so they also need an escape plan … \n\n\nThe film is well directed throughout and has some strong set pieces\, managing along the way to avoid most of the trite conventions of sci-fi or the usual survivalist story; the characters are sensible and likeable – Romain Duris\, Olga Kurylenko and Fantine Harduin are the leads – and the storyline builds to a strong climax. And is it a warning sign? Well\, the source of the toxic fog is never explained; Paris is a city that has seen an alarming increase in air pollution and toxicity rates over the past years. Make up your own mind. \n \n\n\nThis is the last film to be screened in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. DESCRIPTION:Nabil Ayouch’s grittily authentic tale of a rapper turned teacher helping his students find their creative voices is a class act. It manages to combine familiar cinematic tropes like ‘strength through making music’ and the inspirational teacher with a taste of social realism\, discursive politics and accessible rebellion. \nShot over 15 months\, which allowed the project to grow organically and gave time for the screen first-timers to develop\, Ayouch’s cinéma vérité style camerawork gives the film a documentary feel\, but Khalid Benghrib’s choreography elevates the action above the everyday through scenes that take the cast from the classroom to the recording studio\, the stage and beyond. Casablanca Beats has an infectious energy that is both enticing and accessible. Highly recommended. \nScreens in the MOVE ON FILM season.
