DESCRIPTION:“Sometimes we laugh so hard we cry. And sometimes we cry so hard we laugh …” Amer Zahr’s show is described as “a comedic journey through being Palestinian and Arab in today’s times”. The Palestinian-American comedian (and author\, political activist and  adjunct professor at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law) brings more than 10 years of comedy experience to Dubai. He’s performed often with other Palestinian-American comedians like Said Durrah\, Mona Aburmishan\, and Mike Easmeil (and sometimes produced the shows); he runs a comedy festival in his native Dearborn\, Michigan; he has produced and headlined in three of his own comedy tours; and in 2016 and 2020 he served as a surrogate for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. He’s well worth the price of admission to this Dubai Comedy Festival gig.

While refusing to embrace a prevailing pessimism about technological progress\, she seeks for opportunities to expand our intimate relationships with technologies. In addition\, she explores issues of identity\, gender and sexuality through a distinctly erotic component\, while it also challenges dominant narratives. Through her hybrid\, disturbing yet optimistic artistic language\, Chatriot is capable of generating unconventional approaches relating to technological tools. Yet there’s no pessimism about technological progress\, just an exploration of opportunities to expand our relationships with it. Torn is described as “a sexy\, fast-paced\, brutal\, funny and at times moving dissection of post-millennium relationships … with echoes of Patrick Marber’s Closer“; lawyer Susan (Nadine Basiony) is in a relationship with advertising executive Cade (Osman Aboubakr)\, and voiceover artist Gerry (Elie Choufani) is in love with Susan’s PA Daniella (Lis Panilla). “Torn is about the impossibility and possibility of love in a modern world where choices abound and nothing is forever …” \nAlex Broun knows how theatre works best\, and he does good dialogue and excellent plots. This should be a good show. There are performances today at 7.30pm and 9.30pm\, and again on 20 April (4pm\, 7.30pm\, 9.30pm) and 21 April (7.30pm and 9.30pm).

Away from the standup circuit he co-hosted The Big Narstie Show on Channel 4\, had a long stint as a judge on The Masked Singer UK\, and runs his own production company. This Dubai Comedy Festival show is highly recommended. \n
