SUMMARY:Hana El-Sagini: Counting Fingers
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition that presents a newly commissioned large-scale installation rooted in the instability and fragility of the human experience — more than 200 fantastical ceramic objects arranged as surreal sculptures and structures that replicate and reimagine healthcare spaces\, such as medical waiting rooms\, hospital corridors\, and doctors’ offices. These spaces\, typically perceived as sterile and stoic domains\, are transformed into dreamlike sites that are bizarre\, eerie\, and amusing. \nProduced after Hana El-Sagini’s long battle with illness\, the objects featured in this exhibition encourage viewers to find joy and humour in envisioning a strange world where humans\, animals\, plants and inanimate objects blend into semi-distinguishable forms and figures. The exhibition prompts us to pause and contemplate the inherent mechanisms that enable us to endure pain\, trauma\, fear\, and adversity in ways that may potentially reconnect us with our vulnerability and\, ultimately\, our humanity. \nEl-Sagini is a participant in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program\, organized in partnership with The Institute for Emerging Art. \nTo 28 April. \n

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents projects by 12 of the participants in 421’s Homebound Residency Program\, which ran annually from spring 2020 to fall 2023; it is both a celebration of the work produced during the programme and an acknowledgement of the importance of community in artistic practice. \nThroughout the programme\, artists\, curators\, researchers\, and cultural workers came together digitally during the pandemic to support each other and to provide for generative conversations\, critique\, and creative experimentation. The title ‘network culture’ is also a nod to the historical phenomena we are witnessing today – an increasingly interconnected world that is shaped and influenced by the digital. \nThe works featured are by Yara Asmar\, Mona Ayyash\, BaRiya (above)\, Raghvi Bhatia\, Kimia Collective (Chahine Fellahi and Kaïs Aïouch)\, Nihaal Faizal\, Batool Desouky and Zain Mahjoub\, Engy Mohsen\, Roger Mokbel\, Fatma Belkıs and Onur Gökmen\, Mahshid Rafiei\, Ayesha Singh\, and Salem Al Suwaidi. \nThe exhibition also acts as a departure point for future artists who will be part of a new residency programme which will take place in winter 2024 at our new artist studios here in Abu Dhabi. \nTo 28 April. \n  \n

Headliners include Tiësto; Armin van Burren; Hardwell; Ellie Goulding; and the excellent Sebastian Ingrosso\, once of house supergroup Swedish House Mafia. But the list really is very strong\, and tickets are reportedly selling fast: “get ready for music genres from A to Z\, life-changing experiences\, epic arts and entertainment activities\, and the experience of a lifetime …” \nDay passes are AED 300\, a four-dayer is AED 700\, and there are premium access-all-areas packages too. The exact schedule isn’t on  yet\, which is a shame if you want to catch a particular artist on a particular day\, but you can expect music from early evening through to early morning; tickets are apparently valid from 4pm to 5am. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Some of the sessions in the Museum of the Future’s Future Experts talks series have been a tad over-technical\, but this one should hit the mark. Apparently it’s designed “to ignite intellectual discussions and foster collaborative exploration at the intersection of academia and artificial intelligence” by providing “a unique platform for academia to come together\, exchange ideas\, and share cutting-edge research on AI’s pivotal role in design and various other domains”. \nIn fact the speakers all look well qualified to deliver ideas and insights\, albeit in bite-sized chunks – they only get ten minutes apiece\, with a wrap-up Q&A to round out the hour. DESCRIPTION:In modern society\, where listening to others is often replaced with the consumption of visual media\, Hunkaro – meaning ‘verbal affirmation’ in Marathi – is an important counterweight. This performance piece\, co-presented by Ishara Art Foundation\, invites the audience to practise the precious gift of attention through active\, participatory listening. \nIt interweaves three stories of human trials and tribulations\, tied together by the vital importance of hope and the impossibility of life without it. Using traditional singing and vocal techniques\, the stories are narrated in different styles\, languages and dialects by six professional actors. In the absence of musical instruments\, the performers emphasise the aesthetic value of language and the importance of the spoken word. \nThere is a second performance on 18 February. \nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”.
