SUMMARY:Alserkal Lates
DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Lates takes place in the middle of Alserkal Art Week\, so there should be more than two dozen exhibitions in Avenue galleries open till 10pm (half of them taking the opportunity to open on the night) – with the chance to see art but also to chat with curators\, artists and artsworld movers ‘n’ shakers. There will be scheduled artist- and curator-led tours of some of the exhibitions\, too\, which is always going to be interesting. \nAlso opening is This is Not Your Grave\, a new commission by Dima Srouji that marks the return of Alserkal’s programme of public art commissions for 2024. This edition is curated by the American art historian and gallery curator Zoé Whitley under the umbrella title ‘Walk With Me’; apparently she was particularly struck by Alserkal Avenue’s accessibility and cultural and experiential offerings for audiences on foot rather than by car; the 2024-25 commissions will be “ambitious new works whose expressive modes make concepts physically palpable\, immediately relatable and widely accessible. Dima Srouji will lead a guided tour of This is Not Your Grave at 11.30am on 28 February. \nWhitley has also curated the Majlis Talks programme\, running from 4pm under the umbrella title Let the beauty we love be what we do. She’s taking part in one of the sessions with Dima Srouji; there’s also Mandy El-Sayegh in conversation with Sara Raza\, Abbas Akhavan\, Salima Hashmi\, and Graciela Magnoni. The event will conclude with a lecture performance by Himali Singh Soin and David Soin Tappeser. \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Faisal Samra: Immortal Moment II – Coping with the Shock
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition with the second body of work from Faisal Samra’s Immortal Moment project\, artworks created through the accumulation of instances that push the viewer to question the opportunities of a single moment. In the first chapter of this project\, Faisal describes the technique as an expression of emotions; for the current show he defines the outcome as a shock; the exhibition will reveal the process of Coping with the Shock. \n“The dialogue between the abstract and figurative\, conceptually or formalistically\, is essential to Faisal’s work. Time\, being one of the most abstract ideas\, becomes figurative when Faisal visually notes down specific points in time through the use of charcoal and paint. The result is formalistically abstract\, but the final creation becomes figurative through several interventions\, which represent a culmination of temporal instances.” \nTo 15 April. \nAbove: Faisal Samra\, PSF-P2 (2023) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mohammed Kazem and Vikram Divecha: Rest
DESCRIPTION:Two of the most distinctive Dubai-based artists with works that explore the intricate relationship between labour\, rest\, and the ever-evolving urban landscape of the UAE. “Considering the dynamics of human existence\, alternating between cycles of depletion and restoration\, the exhibition highlights the vital role of rest in the perpetual movement of cities\,” says the gallery. “Rest challenges societal norms that discourage rest\, aiming to disrupt the prevailing narrative and explore possibilities on the other side of exhaustion …” To 15 April. \nAbove: Vikram Divecha\, Resting Bodies (Island No.4) (2024)

SUMMARY:Farah Al Qasimi: Toy World
DESCRIPTION:The Third Line’s fourth solo exhibition with Farah Al Qasimi\, Brooklyn based but Abu Dhabi born\, is a collection of still and moving images in colour and – for the first time – black and white too. \n“Black and white images automatically historicize\,” she says. Adds the gallery: “The glossy veneer of history allows us to indulge in theory immune from personal responsibility. Too often\, we forget that the now we live is but prototype for future history.” This looks like being an important show\, about images\, meaning and how the links between them need to be decoded. “All we have are our sigils\, these images. Without them\, we lie alone\, prostrate in the desert under a starless sky …” \nTo 19 April. \nAbove: Farah Al Qasimi\, Camel Bones n.d. (archival inkjet print)

SUMMARY:Charmaine Chanakira: Taking L’s
DESCRIPTION:The latest work from the Zimbabwean artist is described by the gallery as “a vibrant celebration of life’s unexpected lessons\, captured through a fusion of neo-expressionism\, Japanese Manga\, Pop Art\, and African art influences … Her art – alive with bold hues\, playful doodles\, and profound symbolism – serves as a mirror to our innermost thoughts and feelings\, revealing the unseen layers of our consciousness”. \nTaking L’s explores themes of loss\, love\, and learning through an upbeat lens\, offering a visual storytelling experience that celebrates resilience and the joy found in artistic exploration: “Chanakira’s exhibition is a testament to the strength derived from involuntary lessons\, vulnerability and the power of collective support”. \nTo 20 March. \n

SUMMARY:Manjit Bawa: I Was Born a Poet …
DESCRIPTION:Paintings and drawings by Manjit Bawa (1941-2008)\, a modernist master of 20th-century Indian figuration whose work is distinguished by expressive line and colour. To 30 April. \nThe exhibition marks the inauguration of Volte Art Projects’ new Alserkal Avenue space under the name Volte Masters – the focus of which “will be to showcase international modern masters and create new art historical dialogues around their work”. \nThe main direction would appear to be the promotion of modern Indian masters in particular; for Alserkal Art Week\, two works by the noted Indian video artist Nalini Malani are being presented by Alserkal Avenue with support from Volte Art Projects. Curated by Nada Raza\, Director of Alserkal Arts Foundation\, these will be at Concrete between 25 February and 3 March – an evening outdoor projection of the multimedia installation Ballad of a Woman (2023)\, with Malani’s 2020 Whitechapel commission Can You Hear Me? showing inside the space. \nAbove: Manjit Bawa\, Krishna (offset print). SUMMARY:Rachid Koraïchi: An Ode to Intertwined Histories
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition with examples of many of the disciplines and media that made up Koraïchi’s practice\, all “showcasing his abiding fascination with the creation of deeply layered seams within the spiritual\, political and intellectual”.\nKoraïchi often speaks of belonging entirely to writing\, wanting to reveal the secrets of texts by great mystic poets and writers such as Rûmî\, Ibn Arabi\, Attar and Rabia Al Adawya. “Writing and drawing are not two different things'” he said in a recent interview. “They are essentially one and the same – they come\, so to speak\, from the same breath”. Koraïchi’s ‘alphabet of memory’ is anchored in the world of glyphs and cyphers\, where he nurses his fascination for texts function\, aesthetics and cultural significance. \nThe exhibition is centred on the two site-specific scultpures Les Prieurs and Les Priants (above); accompanying them will be 2D work ranging from 3m silk organza tapestries to meticulously detailed canvases. \nTo 25 May. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Phantom of the Opera
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its policy of attracting established blue-chip touring performances\, Dubai Opera is running Broadway Entertainment Group’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed musical for a three-week run. \nThe story is based on Gaston Leroux’s classic novel of a musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House in the 19th century. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of the young soprano Christine\, the Phantom grooms her as his protégé – but that doesn’t go too well\, and his obsession sets the scene for a dramatic collision of jealousy\, madness and passion. \nThe show\, which celebrated 37 years last October\, has won over 70 major theatre awards – it’s Lloyd-Webber’s most successful – and reportedly has been seen by more than 160 million people worldwide; now it’s our turn … There are performances between 22 February and 10 March (not Mondays)\, with shows at 8pm on weekdays and 2pm and 8pm on Saturdays\, 2pm and 7.30pm on the Sundays. Tickets look a tad pricey\, but this is a lavish production with a big cast and a 2h45m run time that could well justify the cost. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Germany Year Zero: dir Roberto Rossellini (1948)
DESCRIPTION:Amid the ruins of war-torn Berlin immediately after the Second World War\, 12-year-old Edmund struggles to support his ailing father; he gets caught up in black market schemes and falls to a Nazi-sympathising former teacher – with tragic consequences. The concluding part of Rossellini’s celebrated War Trilogy\, this daring and heart-rending portrait of a decimated post-war European city remains one of the most affecting films in the history of cinema. SUMMARY:Laura Lappi: Metamorphosis
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the MENA region for the Finnish artist. Her work draws inspiration from ancient basilicas\, cathedrals\, and other Scandinavian wooden structures. Using wood as her primary medium\, Lappi establishes a direct connection to her homeland and the natural world through sculptures that evoke architectural qualities. \nTransformation is central to Lappi’s practice; the wall sculptures from her Basilica series show wood transitioning from a living organism to a shaped\, discarded\, reused\, cut\, and organised material. Layering wood to form intricate geometric patterns\, she employs a charring technique using fire; the material  undergoes a profound metamorphosis\, assuming an in-between state\, half-dead and half-alive\, resistant to preservation. \nThe exhibition also introduces a collection of drawings that offer a glimpse into her creative process and inner thoughts. These drawings serve as a bridge between the conceptual realm on paper and the tangible manifestation of transformation in her art\, providing an illuminating perspective on her artistic journey. \nTo 26 April.

SUMMARY:Eco(ed) Visions
DESCRIPTION:A group show\, curated by Sanaz Askari\, that brings together artists whose works explore nature’s sanctuary amidst the urban sprawl\, forging an intimate connection. The starting point is Mark Foster Gage’s proposal that urbanisation has transformed architectural edifices into the primary backdrop of our reality.; nature’s role is diminished to that of a leisurely destination. And as the relentless tide of urbanisation swells\, a palpable reliance on art to fill the void left by nature becomes a necessary consequence … \nSays the gallery: “the works in the exhibition echo an invitation for the re-imagining of futures that intertwine nature and human life over their constructed boundaries. Can we manifest new realities by widening our awareness of the relationship between the urban and the natural? What do we find when we seek sanctuary in nature against the backdrop of uncertainty and existential crises? How do we hold on to the visions of a new spring\, waiting to be born again?” \nThe artists: Abbas Akhavan\, Ali Akbar Sadeghi\, Claire Cical Quassine\, Dana Dawud\, Farideh Lashai\, Fereydoun Ave\, Hadieh Shafie\, Hashel Al Lamki\, Negar Farajiani\, Salé Sharifi\, Sasan Abri. \nTo 3 March. \n

SUMMARY:Carpets of Eden\, Gardens of Fantasy
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition of carpets designed by artists and curated by Behrang Samadzadegan is described by the gallery as “a territory where artists navigate unbridled fantasies … Like architects of dreams\, they go beyond the surface\, delving into the unseen\, weaving layers of imagination that transcend the tangible. Here\, carpets cease to be mere floor coverings; they metamorphose into canvases\, hosting a symphony of dreams where fantasy begets more fantasy”. \nThe artists: Etel Adnan\, Faig Ahmed\, Maryam Al-Homaid\, Ayman Baalbaki\, Melis Buyruk (above)\, Josefina Concha\, Ali Cha’aban\, Mohammad Ehsaei\, Bijan Ghaseminejad\, Shoeib Gorgani\, Marcos Grigorian\, Shahzad Hassan Ghazi\, Areen Hassan\, Mona Hatoum\, Debbie Lawson\, Aref Montazeri\, Soheil Rad\, Farid Rasulov\, Marwan Sahmarani\, Antonio Santin\, Parviz Tanavoli\, Shaheer Zazai. \nTo 20 September. \n

SUMMARY:Aref Montazeri: Immortal Mirror
DESCRIPTION:Montazeri’s solo show emphasises the mirror’s role as a time capsule\, capturing time layer by layer – “with a single gaze\, time halts\, letting the audience see themselves in the present\, amid past moments and a myriad of images within the mirror’s layers … Montazeri uses what the gallery terms an innovative chemical oxidation process\, “mimicking the effects of time”.

SUMMARY:Nalini Malani: Can You Hear Me?
DESCRIPTION:This show looks like something of a coup for Alerkal Avenue. Widely considered the pioneer of video art in India\, and embodying the role of the artist as social activist\, Malani has a 50-year multimedia practice that includes photography\, painting\, performance\, and theatre as well as film\, video and animation.; her visual stories tyically take the form of immersive\, multi-layered installations that explore themes of feminism and politics\, racial tensions and post-colonial legacies. \nIn Can You Hear Me?\, which first impressed us at the Whitechapel Gallery a couple of years ago\, a large-scale\, nine-channel video installation of over 88 iPad-drawn animations made between 2018 and 2020 is projected on to the space’s walls; text and visual quotations\, annotations and snippets of sound and music — what the artist calls ‘thought bubbles’— come together\, intersect\, and are taken apart in Malani’s ‘Animation Chamber’. \nOne of the starting points was the abduction\, rape and brutal murder of an eight-year-old girl in India in 2018\, but that launches a flow of images and ideas which transcend national trauma to address global issues of feminism and social injustice. In Malani’s universe the voiceless share the stage with mythic characters\, intellectuals and poets; moral outrage combines with satire and absurdity. \nIt’s a powerful piece\, and it should suit this space very well (“the work inhabits the architectural expanse of the OMA-designed Concrete with unprecedented theatrical impact\,” says the blurb). The exhibition will be open 10am to midnight up to 3 March. \nIt will be accompanied by special outdoor screenings of an adapted version of the artist’s seminal work\, Ballad of a Woman\, a five-minute single channel stop-motion animation hand-drawn on an iPad. Screenings take place on 25 February at 7pm\, 27 February at 7.45pm\, and 2 March at 7pm. \n \n

SUMMARY:James Blunt: The Who We Used To Be Tour
DESCRIPTION:The hip may find him unredeemably uncool\, and his voice is definitely a bit of an acquired taste\, but James Blunt’s songs are well-crafted\, articulate\, often accessibly personal\, and speak to a broad audience of wildly enthusiastic fans. It helps that he has a nice line in self-deprecation; famously he started a 2022 concert by saying this was a greatest hit (singular) evening\, and he was going to play You’re Beautiful about 22 times. \nHe’s touring his seventh studio album Who We Used To Be\, a decent collection of songs about love\, loss\, self-discovery and personal growth of – so the lyrical mix much as before – that blends elements of folk\, pop\, upbeat rock and even housey beats (as on the new album’s first single\, Beside You: a possibly relevant fact is that Blunt has a house on Ibiza). The album divided critics (“one of Blunt’s best albums to date” vs “completely tedious and unmemorable”) but Blunt always puts on a good show\, so we’re happy to recommend this one … \n  \n
