SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY The Two Walks: Works on Paper selected by Judy Karkour
DESCRIPTION:A group show of new and archival works on paper selected by Judy Karkour that brings together 14 artists with distinct material and artistic backgrounds – Sarah Almehairi\, Faris Alshafar\, Olaf Breuning\, Bernhard Buhmann\, André Butzer\, Nadine Ghandour\, Monika Grabuschnigg\, Amir Khojasteh\, Nour Malas\, Solimar Miller\, Philip Mueller\, Mayar Obedo\, Edgar Orlaineta\, Amba Sayal-Bennett. \nThe title refers to “the corridor that souls use to travel between worlds\, to the thousand lives that live within one\, and to those who resist conformity” and the exhibition explores paper as a medium that challenges scale as grandiose; there is something uniquely revealing about working with paper\, and each of the artists uses and manipulates it in different ways that expand beyond its traditional associations – to express hidden existential thoroughfare\, complex intentions\, and explore innovative techniques.

SUMMARY:Nothing Worth Mentioning
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition featuring more than 40 works by 16 photographers (of different nationalities\, but all based in the UAE) that seek to find beauty and meaning in the small moments of everyday life\, personal rituals\, routines\, brief encounters\, simple gestures and humble places we often overlook. As the gallery puts it\, “It reminds us that sometimes the things we dismiss as ordinary are the things that tell us who we are\, where we come from\, and what we remember”. \nThe exhibition is curated by Ola Allouz\, herself an award-winning photographer; her idea for the exhibition grew from taking groups of photographers on trips to the village of Kumzar. For Allouz\, the moments around the table stayed with her the most\, sharing food\, stories\, laughter\, and conversation. That led to the question at the heart of the exhibition: ‘Can a feeling be archived?”’ \nThere are works by Abdallah Alastad\, Abdulla Al Ghurair\, Abdulla Alblooshi\, Aisha Esmaeilzadeh\, Akhilesh Nair\, April Ann Vocal\, Fatima Al Amiri\, Fatima Albudoor\, Judite Serafim\, Latifa Almazrouei\, Maitha Alqassmi\, Maria Khodzhamberdieva\, Mohamed Al Alawi\, Preschelle Ann Bigueras\, Sara Al Shamsi and Ola Allouz herself. Additionally\, Emirati writer Ayesha Alyassi also joins the exhibition with her Therapy Mail Club\, an interactive installation that invites visitors to write\, send\, and share messages related to the heart of the exhibition’s theme. \nTo 27 September. \nRight: Latifa Almazrouei\, Umaya’s wonders and wanders

SUMMARY:The Dirty Dozen Brass Band / Fanfaraï
DESCRIPTION:A terrific start to the new season at The Arts Center – a high-octane double bill featuring two bands\, both making their Gulf debuts\, who really know how to deliver. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (above) is the pioneering group that brought funk to traditional New Orleans jazz : the New Orleans-based Grammy Award winners blend traditional jazz and bebop with funk and R&B/soul – lots of energy\, lots of musicality\, and how can a band that includes both a tuba and a bass sax not deliver a good time all round? And Fanfaraï (below) is a kind of French/North African equivalent\, a brass and percussion ensemble founded in 2005 and based in France with musicians from a variety of cultural backgrounds who merge Arab-Berber\, Afro-Cuban\, Latin\, and jazz sounds with reggae and funk – and as the name indicates\, there’s going to be a lot of brass and a real overlay of raï (their 2018 album Raï is not Dead says it like it is). This will be a great evening …

SUMMARY:Amna AlMemari\, Lubnah Ansari\, MG\, Andrew Riad: Infrared
DESCRIPTION:This group show is the culmination of the second edition of NIKA Project Space’s Open Studio programme: four artists based in the UAE were invited to develop new bodies of work in dialogue with the space\, one another\, and the public. Curated by Rahel Aima\,  the exhibition brings together projects developed during the residency themed around the observer effect – “in which a wave becomes a particle and the body becomes a tongue through ritual\, accumulation\, and the heat of the eye … Rather than producing works in response to a prescribed theme\, the participating artists continued investigations proposed during the Open Studio application process. Over the course of the residency\, these projects evolved through experimentation\, research\, conversation\, and material exploration\, offering a glimpse into artistic practice as an unfolding process”. \nDubai-based Singaporean artist MG has new paintings from her ongoing series Collecting the Collectors\, which examines the private interiors of art collectors as psychologically charged spaces where identity and power are negotiated through objects and images. Drawing from real interiors while deliberately disrupting their spatial logic\, her paintings transform domestic settings into unstable environments in which artworks\, decorative objects\, and their owners become participants in an intricate theatre of collecting and self-construction. \nAndrew Riad expands his multidisciplinary research into dance\, ancient Egyptian mythology\, and the material history of copper through an installation combining painting\, sculpture\, text\, and ritual gesture. The project interweaves personal memory\, Coptic funerary traditions\, and the persistence of language; copper\, roses\, milk\, water\, and movement recur throughout the installation and individual objects\, connecting ideas of ancestry\, spirituality\, and cultural survival. \nLubnah Ansari continues the material investigations initiated through recent research; her practice considers the migrations and transformations of the word haq across South and Southwest Asia\, approaching language as a material capable of translation and renewal. Working with ash\, stone\, sand\, glass\, photography\, and found objects\, Ansari develops sculptural and photographic works that reflect on memory and the ways meaning persists across histories and geographies. \nAnd Emirati artist Amna AlMemari presents a new chapter in her ongoing exploration of Tarflowers\, a fictional ecosystem that draws on the landscapes and visual culture of the Gulf. Combining photography\, drawing\, and mixed media\, her works construct speculative environments where geological\, political\, and media narratives become layered into new visual ecologies. \nTo 31 October. \nRight: Amna AlMemari\, Tarflowers (fragment) (2026)

SUMMARY:The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning contemporary dance from Aotearoa/New Zealand\, one of the hits of Edinburgh 2025. Created by Oli Mathiesen with Lucy Lynch and Sharvon Mortimer and inspired by the energy and emotion of rave culture\, it’s a spectacle of stamina\, sweat\, and sheer willpower performed to a pulsating soundtrack of techno\, house and more by Detroit DJ Suburban Knight’s album Nocturbulous Behaviour. \nOli Mathiesen has described it as “an endurance-based dance work” that “embraces the movement vocabulary of techno and rave culture\, creating a contemporary nightclub experience expressed through three bodies … We like to think of it as a three-day rave condensed into 60 minutes of relentless\, seamless movement\, perfectly synced to every beat … The piece taps into that primal need to keep going\, keep pushing\, and chase more – no matter the cost”. \nIt runs Thursday to Saturday\, 10 to 12 September. Each performance will be followed by a short dance party\, with audiences invited to stay for DJ sets by Dubai’s very cool Analog Room.

SUMMARY:Karak After Dark Vol 3
DESCRIPTION:It looks like this night of improvisational comedy has been so successful that progenitors Tall Tales Productions and The Junction will be running it regularly. The team for this show looks a particularly good mix of acting and comedy talent: Asad Raza Khan\, Tarek El Saad \, Paul Jones\, Osama Farooqui\, Court Ash Dale\, Nour Al Kaddour\, and Salman Qureshi.

SUMMARY:The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave
DESCRIPTION:Second of three performances for this award-winning contemporary dance from Aotearoa/New Zealand. Each performance will be followed by a short dance party\, with DJ sets by Dubai’s very cool Analog Room.

SUMMARY:The Jury Experience: The Deadly Boat Ride
DESCRIPTION:The audience for this show has been called for jury duty. As the story proceeds you hear the testimony\, analyse the evidence\, and ultimately decide whether the accused is guilty or not … It’s a courtroom drama where you get to vote at key points – and your decisions shape the case\, altering the progress of the drama and making every show different! \nThe story that you hear is satisfyingly meaty: the son of a powerful politician takes the wheel of the family’s speedboat with a party of friends including an ex-lover. A few hours later\, one is dead\, another is in a coma\, and the son is facing a murder charge. Was it an act of jealous rage? Or is there far more to this tragedy than meets the eye? \nThere are two shows\, at 5pm and 7pm.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Time That Grows Slowly
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition based around site-specific installations and considering ecological\, feminist\, philosophical\, and postcolonial concerns. The core inspiration however is “philosophical reflections of time as growth rather than movement … Time\, as humans experience it\, is inseparable from the vegetal. The oxygen we breathe\, the food we consume\, the rhythms of agriculture and settlement — all are shaped by plant life. Yet this dependency remains largely invisible”.  The curator\, Alexander Burenkov\, suggests that the exhibition “proposes a toolkit for slowing down\, a reorientation of our sensorium to the rhythms of plants\, the creation of space for vegetal attunement\, reflection and contemplation in dynamic urban conditions\, and the raising of questions about how duration\, memory\, and lived experience are produced within such environments …” \nThe artists: \nMaha Alasaker Kuwait / UAE\nSrijon Chowdhury Bangladesh / USA\nOdonchimeg Davaadorj Mongolia / France\nPatricia Domínguez Chile\nLouis Guillaume France\nMevlana Lipp Germany\nSulafa Mohammed UAE\nTabita Rezaire France / French Guiana\nShaima Shamsi Saudi Arabia / Bahrain / UAE\nFarah Soltani Iran / UAE\nAntoine Renard France\nNadia Waheed Saudi Arabia / Pakistan / USA

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Petr Kirusha: Every moment is a fresh beginning
DESCRIPTION:A solo show featuring works that Petr Kirusha developed during his residency at Dom Art Projects. At a time of heightened geopolitical tension between the US and Iran\, Kirusha documented the landscapes of Al Quoz and the rapidly changing cityscape of Dubai – observations that evolved into paintings and works on paper. “Working with a post-digital approach to colour\, he leaves the white of the paper active — like a blank screen — and employs a technique that preserves luminosity in the lower layers of paint”. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Rana Begum: Boundless Geometry
DESCRIPTION:Selected works from the Farjam Collection. Through a refined language of Minimalist abstraction\, the London-based artist blurs the boundaries between sculpture\, painting and architecture – “bringing together works that explore light\, colour\, perception\, and spatial experience\, the exhibition reflects Rana Begum’s distinctive visual language\, where geometry becomes fluid\, atmospheric\, and deeply sensory … Through shifting reflections\, layered structures\, and luminous surfaces\, Boundless Geometry invites viewers into a contemplative encounter with form\, movement\, and space”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Ahmad AlAttar: Human in the Loop
DESCRIPTION:Human in the Loop is a sound-based interactive installation that takes the form of a game of hide-and-seek between visitors and an unseen algorithm. Hanging ropes are suspended from the ceiling and visitors are invited to pull on them; each pull interrupts the continuous ambient sounds of nature with a brief\, glitch-like sound. At first\, these responses may feel random\, but with repetition\, patterns begin to emerge; and when the correct rope is found\, the system responds with a distinct and heightened auditory moment – a brief reward that signals discovery. Almost immediately\, the algorithm relocates\, hiding once again within the field of ropes\, and the search resets. \nSo what begins as playful interaction gradually becomes an act of careful listening and navigation. Human in the Loop reflects a contemporary paradox: we take pleasure in interaction even as it draws us deeper into technological rhythms that are increasingly difficult to step away from. \nAhmad AlAttar\, currently is a Senior Robotics Engineer at Dubai Future Labs\, was a participant in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program (ADP)\, facilitated by Jolaine Frizzell. During preparation for the exhibition he was also mentored by Khalid AlAwadhi\, Founder & CEO of Remal\, and Dr Pradeep Sharma\, Director of the Arts\, Culture and Heritage program at the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation. \nTo 13 September.

SUMMARY:Blind Symphony
DESCRIPTION:A concert with a difference – venue is absolutely dark\, and each audience member dons a light-blocking mask. The idea of course is that without visual perception your full attention is on the sound: “the most subtle musical nuances\, delicate vibrations\, and inner rhythms become clearer and more intense\,” as the blurb puts it. “Even familiar compositions reveal themselves in a new\, deeper\, and more powerful way under these conditions.” \nThe programme features works by JS Bach\, Arvo Pärt\, Philip Glass\, Max Richter\, and Ludovico Einaudi. It’s performed by a chamber ensemble (we don’t know exactly who) “enriched with rare instruments collected from different cultures around the world”.
