SUMMARY:La Ferme des Bertrand (The Bertrand’s Farm): dir Gilles Perret (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Reflective\, slightly elegiac documentary on rural French farming life via three visits over 50 years to a family farm in Haute-Savoie. In 1972\, the Bertrand dairy farm — run by three brothers and home to a hundred animals — is filmed for the first time. Director (and neighbour) Gilles Perret returned in 1997\, when the farm is being passed on to nephew Patrick and his wife Hélène. Twenty‑five years later\, he picks up the camera again as Hélène prepares to hand over the reins. Through the voices and gestures of those who shaped the farm across generations\, the film traces intimate life paths shaped by work\, continuity\, and change … \nIn French with English subtitles. Screens as part of the series Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Charlie Koolhaas: AFTER THE IMAGE
DESCRIPTION:Developed in relation to the UAE Modern Architectural Heritage Grant\, AFTER THE IMAGE transforms a gallery presentation and a room of the XVA Art Hotel into an immersive archive of Dubai’s modern architectural heritage. Through photography\, sculpture\, textiles\, and garments\, the exhibition explores the city’s changing urban landscapes and the stories embedded within them. Koolhaas reimagines the archive as something lived\, worn\, and experienced\, where architecture\, memory\, and everyday life converge …

SUMMARY:Bookends Book Club: Tuesdays with Morrie
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled ‘An Old Man\, A Young Man and Life’s Greatest Lesson\, this 1997 memoir by the award-winning sports columnist Mitch Albom is based on a series of Tuesday visits he made to his former sociology professor\, Morrie Schwartz\, as Schwartz was dying from motor neurone disease (the book was written in part to help defray Schwartz’s mounting end-of-life medical expenses).  Each chapter covers a different topic of conversation — including death\, fear\, ageing\, greed\, marriage\, family\, forgiveness\, and the meaning of life — interspersed with Albom’s reflections on his own career-driven lifestyle and flashbacks to his college years. The results are sincere and the writing skilful; but is it inspirational? Or even sentimental? \n

SUMMARY:A Cosmic Voyage: dir Vasilij Zuravlëv (1936)
DESCRIPTION:This Soviet-era silent film was one of the earliest to represent a realistic spaceflight\, including weightlessness. It’s pitched in the year 1946\, with Professor Sedikh\, who is planning to lead the first crewed exploration to the Moon\, denounced by a rival as being too old and too mentally unstable for the mission. Aided by his assistants Marina and Andryusha\, Sedikh makes the journey anyway – with a successful landing\, a few adventures on the Moon\, and a triumphant return to Moscow. The last Soviet silent feature to be made – it was produced at a time when talkies had become firmly established – A Cosmic Voyage deploys elaborate special effects that are especially convincing for the lunar expedition. \nScreens as part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Sunday Cinema Club – a free film followed by a talk or a workshop\, 3pm each Sunday from 5 July to 30 Aug at the Photography Gallery in Al Manakh. Films are child-friendly animations (5–19 July)\, pioneering science fiction (26 July–9 Aug)\, or “significant works of Arab cinema” (16-20 Aug).

SUMMARY:Book Cellar Dubai: The Elephant in the Brain
DESCRIPTION:Another really interesting pick by Book Cellar. The authors – software engineer and writer Kevin Simler and economics professor Robin Hanson – start from the premise that we are often unaware of the real reasons for our behaviours: they go through several examples\, explaining them through that framework of signalling and self-deception. Meaty and interesting. (The publisher’s website describes the book as aiming “to track down the darker\, unexamined corners of our psyches and blast them with floodlights”.)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Supermarket
DESCRIPTION:A great idea from Foundry Downtown – a group exhibition featuring artists based in the UAE who are not (currently) represented by galleries. The organisers describe it as “for the first time\, a selling exhibition structured around accessibility\, discovery\, and dialogue. The project seeks to encourage a broader public to engage with contemporary art with greater confidence and curiosity\, while offering artists an opportunity to present their work in a context that is both visible and commercially supportive …” \nIn that context\, the title represents a quite deliberate borrowing from retail – though the curators are keen to emphasise that doesn’t mean crudely reducing art to merchandise rather than “critically asking what it means to ‘shop’ for art at a moment when value is shaped not only by artistic quality\, but also by visibility\, narrative\, and systems of legitimacy”. Still\, it is a selling exhibition\, with works at “an accessible price point” …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Noor Al Suwaidi: The Sky Forgets\, the Heart Remembers
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition of a new body of work\, curated by Cima Azzam\, Noor Al Suwaidi approaches colour as a field of sensation where form appears and dissolves within shifting tonalities – “figures hover at the edge of abstraction; colour gathers\, disperses\, and returns again … allowing forms to surface briefly before receding again\, like a feeling remembered but never fully named”. Alongside the paintings\, monochrome marble-like sculptures introduce a contrasting presence with absence of colour to offer a quiet counterpoint to the chromatic intensity of the canvases. And the gallery itself has been tuned to suit: “deep maroon walls hold the paintings in a state of quiet intensity … the architecture of the space has been softened. Surfaces are sanded and corners eased into gentle curves. The room no longer insists on edges. Instead\, it moves with a quieter rhythm that echoes the sensibility of the works themselves …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Salmah Al Mansoori: Who I Become
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in her surroundings\, the work of Salmah Al Mansoori\, an Emirati artist from Abu Dhabi\, begins with acts of noticing: fragments\, residues\, and overlooked materials drawn from everyday life. These are reworked into new forms that carry both personal and collective memory; handmade paper\, infused with desert grasses\, palm fibres\, and natural pigments\, holds traces of landscape and labour\, while extending the life of what might otherwise disappear. Documentation gives way to transformation; what begins as an act of collecting becomes a process of reconfiguration\, where materials shift\, forms evolve\, and associations remain open. \nCurated by Cima Azzam and featuring artworks loaned by Firetti Contemporary\, the presentation reflects an ongoing exploration of memory\, material\, and place.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Juma Al Haj: Interoception
DESCRIPTION:Centred on the concept of ‘interoception’\, the body’s ability to sense and process its internal state\, this exhibition examines how moments of crisis are internalised and transformed into material expression. Developed in response to the first missile attacks reported in the UAE in February 2026\, Interoception traces Al Haj’s instinctive return to painting as a means of processing fear\, uncertainty\, and collective anxiety; working through layered surfaces\, fragmented script\, and visceral mark-making\, the artist transforms deeply personal reactions into visual expressions of disruption and resilience.  The show is curated by Shamma Al Mheiri.

SUMMARY:Vantage Point 13
DESCRIPTION:The latest edition of Sharjah Art Foundation’s open-call photography exhibition examines the evolving possibilities of documentary photography through newly commissioned works by six artists – Luisa Dörr\, Latifa AlBokhari\, Sathish Kumar\, Adam Rouhana\, Guanyu Xu and Maheder Haileselassie. \nThe principle is that photography is not simply as a tool for recording reality but can be treated as a medium through which histories and systems of representation are negotiated. So through portraiture and observational strategies\, Dörr\, AlBokhari and Kumar probe the nuances of lived experience\, tracing intimate connections between land and belonging via long-term collaborations with individuals\, families and communities; Rouhana\, Guanyu Xu and Haileselassie explore themes of absence and rupture\, photography as a means of grappling with questions of visibility and with histories interrupted by conflict or erasure. As SAF puts it: “The works position documentary photography as a field in transformation – one defined not by static truths\, but by continual discernment”. \nVantage Point 13 is curated by Sara Al Mheiri and Osemudiamen Ekore of the SAF curatorial team. \nTo 29 November. \nAbove: Sathish Kumar\, Dream (2026). SUMMARY:Shan Castelino: To Live Boldly\, To Love Wildly
DESCRIPTION:Castelino has spent nearly three decades in Dubai with an extensive career at Christie’s and senior positions within leading contemporary galleries\, working with some of the most celebrated contemporary artists of our time and gaining a rare perspective on artistic practice\, materiality\, and the emotional possibilities of abstraction. As a result\, her debut solo exhibition – a new body of paintings that covers “resilience\, memory\, transformation\, and the enduring dialogue between humanity and the natural world” – should be well worth the visit. \nRather than depicting landscapes\, says the gallery\, Castelino paints “emotional terrains”. So nature is never treated simply as scenery; instead\, it becomes a living metaphor for the human condition. Built through successive layers of paint\, texture\, gesture\, and light\, the paintings reveal themselves gradually. “Botanical forms emerge before dissolving into luminous fields of colour. Leaves become fragments of memory. Water suggests movement\, surrender\, and healing. The surface itself records time\, with each layer preserving traces of experiences that can never be erased but continue to shape what follows …”

SUMMARY:Habeeb Abu-Futtaim: The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude
DESCRIPTION:Two interconnected exhibitions\, both curated by Mo Reda and supported by the Department of Painting and Printmaking at VCUarts Qatar. Together\, The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude mark the culmination of a two-month residency at Bayt AlMamzar; they present several different bodies of work developed over the past ten years\, drawing from an artistic practice shaped by sustained research\, investigation\, and critical inquiry. \nWorking across painting\, installation\, performance\, video\, and writing\, Abu-Futtaim investigates the construction and performance of collective identities\, examining how inherited symbols\, political imaginaries\, and cultural narratives become internalized as expressions of belonging. Songs in Solitude reflects on the intimate space of artistic practice through playfulness\, imagination\, intimacy\, and selfhood; The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia turns outward to examine the inherited performances of collective identity and the burden of unrealized political futures. Between them the exhibitions move between the personal and the political\, revealing how solitude\, memory\, and collective imagination continually shape one another. \nTo 2 October.

SUMMARY:2001 A Space Odyssey: dir Stanley Kubrick (1968)
DESCRIPTION:Kubrick redefined sci-fi movies with 2001: A Space Odyssey\, a film widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential ever made. It wasn’t just the scientifically accurate depiction of spaceflight and the pioneering special effects\, or even the rejection of conventional cinematic and narrative techniques – there’s very little dialogue\, for instance\, and lengthy sequences are accompanied only by music. The main point of contention is the ambiguity; in theory it’s the account of a journey to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith (with the explicit suggestion that an alien intelligence has been fostering human development through millennia). But beyond that the film has accumulated a variety of interpretations\, ranging from the darkly apocalyptic to an optimistic reappraisal of the hopes of humanity – there are themes of human evolution\, technology\, artificial intelligence\, the possibility of extraterrestrial life\, and how humanity can cope with any or all of that. It was nominated for four Academy Awards\, winning Kubrick the only Oscar he would receive – for his direction of the visual effects.
