SUMMARY:Ras Al Khaimah Art 2026 Festival
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years the Ras Al Khaimah Art Festival has grown into a solid contributor to the UAE’s arts and culture scene\, with a community-oriented twist to the mix of exhibitions\, performances\, workshops and film screenings. There’s always a theme – this year it’s ‘Civilizations’\, a catch-all which should be able to accommodate just about any kind of culture – but the characteristic feature is the community engagement and the strong sense of RAK itself being part of the festival. \nIt has an excellent site at Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village\, which is where most of the exhibitions and events happen – exhibitions are open for the whole of the festival (16 January to 8 February)\, but performances and other one-offs occupy the three weekends. \nThis first weekend sees guided art and heritage tours\, several workshops – including calligraphy\, light art\, traditional agriculture\, and a two-day Photowalk and Film Photography masterclass – and live performances. They kick off with AlMaydee’s soulful soft rock (Friday\, 9-9.45pm) and the Saturday stage gets Luiza (jazzy pop\, great voice) followed by the AFCENT Band (that’s the official US Air Forces Central ensemble with a signature mix of pop\, rock\, and big band jazz). \nElsewhere in the village there’s Alana Hicks with a one-woman show titled Voices in the Dark (“a thoughtful exploration of identity\, culture\, and the threads that bind us: Saturday 6pm) and James Scarr with his excellent Mime Show (Sunday 6pm). \nNew for 2026 is The Hidden Table\, a curated culinary programme that expands the festival into gastronomy by positioning food as a form of cultural storytelling; the first two weekends get Chama\, an open-fire dining experience by Portuguese chef Tiago Pazzini with no fixed menu (“each evening is guided by seasonality\, elemental cooking\, and instinct\, allowing cuisine to unfold as a live\, creative expression”). The final weekend it’s Restaurant Pine\, the creation of Northumberland chefs Cal Byerley and Ian Waller to celebrate “the rhythm of the seasons [and] a modern echo of ancient land”. \nChama will cost you AED 350 but entrance to the festival and most of the other happenings are free\, including the live music. Preregistration is required for the spaces-limited events like the workshops; check out the full first-weekend programme here.

SUMMARY:Sharjah Light Festival
DESCRIPTION:magpie has long been a fan of the Sharjah Light Festival\, the 14th edition of which runs 3 to 15 February. By contrast with the newer Manar Abu Dhabi and Dhai Dubai light art festivals\, SLF generally takes a more conventional approach – which typically means illuminating iconic cultural (and some natural) landmarks\, albeit with active light shows. \nThis year’s Sharjah Light Festival features light shows in 13 locations\, and there’s clearly been a deliberate effort to spread them beyond Sharjah City. Locally there are shows at Dr Sultan Al Qassimi Center near University City Hall\, Al Majaz Waterfront\, Kalba Waterfront\, the General Souq at Al Hamriyah\, Al Jada\, and the House of Wisdom. And it should be worth making the trips to Al Rafisah Dam\, Al Dhaid Fort\, Khorfakkan Waterfall\, the Hanging Gardens in Kalba\, Dibba’s AlTayari Mosque\, and Sharjah Fort in Al Hisn.  \nThere’s also the Light Village in front of the University City Hall building\, which will have around 55 F&B and retail vendors plus entertainment and activities. That stays open till 22 February. \n

SUMMARY:Rabbit Hole
DESCRIPTION:It looks as though the Junction has found another small gem – David Lindsay-Abaire’s play\, winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama\, is a deeply moving yet surprisingly funny story about a family navigating love\, loss\, and the search for hope. Becca and Howie have a picture-perfect family life in the suburbs of New York until a random accident takes the life of their four-year-old son. As Becca and Howie grow apart under the strain of grief: Becca’s mother badgers her about her grieving process; Becca’s younger sister Izzy announces that she is pregnant\, so there will now be a new child in the family; and Jason\, the young driver who killed their son\, continually shows up to ask forgiveness. \nBut Rabbit Hole is not just about grief—it’s about the strength of family\, the healing power of compassion\, and the possibility of finding light in unexpected places. \nDirected by Arjam Burman for the Junction’s resident company H72 Productions. There are further shows on 7 and 8 February.

SUMMARY:Huma Shoaib: Fractal
DESCRIPTION:Huma Shoaib has always been an interesting\, thoughtful artist\, creating patterns from sacred geometry and looking for analogies in life and nature. She often uses paper cut silhouettes layered with detailed graphite drawings that typically adds three-dimensional depth to otherwise flat imagery. \nAccording to the gallery\, this new show is “an exhibition that explores chaos as fractal paradox; where perfect\, infinite patterns of existence\, spirituality and free will will repeat across scales\, blurring the line between divine order and self-destructive conflict …” Significantly influenced by sufi ideologies\, Huma Shoaib’s work tries to break down this chaos into simple fractal structures that speak of order\, perfection\, the divine. \nTo 5 March.

SUMMARY:Abdelwahab Hawam: Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The debut exhibition in the UAE by the emerging Egyptian artist draws inspiration from Hawam’s hometown of El Mahalla El Kubra in Gharbeya Governorate – its countryside\, colours\, and the faces of people who shaped his early life. Working in oils\, Hawam places women at the centre of this universe through surreal\, playful narrative compositions and colours; he reimagines human experiences with an uplifting\, optimistic vision that invites viewers into his vibrant\, magical world. SUMMARY:Vivaldi: A Journey East
DESCRIPTION:This UAE National Orchestra concert looks like a really interesting (and challenging) option – music by the baroque master composer rescored for the instruments\, modes and sounds of the Arab world: “a musical dialogue emerges\, as harpsichord converses with qanun and violin answers the oud\, finding shared language”. We don’t know exactly which Vivaldi works have provided the source material\, or indeed who provided the arrangements\, but it’s bound to be worth the ticket price …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Leda Catunda: I like to like what others are liking
DESCRIPTION:The most comprehensive solo exhibition to date of Brazilian artist Leda Catunda outside her home country. Sharjah Art Foundation is presenting four decades of Catunda’s practice\, tracing the transformation of her art from figurative painting to hybrid forms that explore materiality\, abstraction and dimensionality; her works typically explore the limits of textures and materials\, exemplifed by her ‘soft paintings’ over materials like toweling\, bedclothes\, leather\, velvet and silk. But the scope is broad: from large-scale installations to elemental watercolours\, each piece embodies a sensuous negotiation between the handmade and the mass-produced\, offering a whimsical critique of pop culture and consumerism.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Juliet Makhlouf: Admiring Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:More than 30 new paintings\, offering a comprehensive survey of the artist’s recent work. This show approaches ancestry as a living presence rather than a distant past\, reflecting on civilizations whose surviving traces – clay tablets\, systems of law and trade\, and foundational narratives such as the Epic of Gilgamesh – continue to shape collective human memory. The story of Syria is presented as inseparable from that of the wider Arab world\, formed through centuries of shared history\, values\, and belief.

SUMMARY:Jorge Tacla: Time the destroyer is time the preserver
DESCRIPTION:While Jorge Tacla was only an adolescent during the 1973 coup against Chile’s democratically-elected socialist president Salvador Allende\, the upheaval left an irrevocable mark on his politics and practice. Titled after a line from a TS Eliot poem\, Tacla’s “most expansive presentation to date” examines how enduring truths can be excavated in the aftermath of a destructive incident. \nStructured as eight ‘chapters’\, the exhibition traces Tacla’s sustained challenge to the supposed hierarchies of human suffering\, false binaries of victim and perpetrator\, and the structural violence connecting seemingly disparate events; the paintings reassert the primacy of human memory and perception in navigating the complexities of representation and interpretation. By depicting buildings and landscapes ‘in negative’\, the artist defines form through absence\, “creating images that reflect on how events are inscribed within individual and collective consciousness”. \nThe exhibition is curated by SAF director Hoor Al Qasimi with Abdulla Aljanahi\, Curatorial Assistant at the Foundation. To 7 June. \nAbove: Jorge Tacla\, La Distribucion de los Primarios (The Distribution of the Primes) (1995)

SUMMARY:Ahaad Alamoudi: Sunkissed
DESCRIPTION:The motifs of the sun and its intense heat as well as the sand and its pervasive orange hue often serve to represent and condense the Gulf’s complex ecologies and aspirations. This selection of recent and newly commissioned works by Jeddah-based artist Ahaad Alamoudi draws on these stereotypical symbols to examine how collective identity and visual expression intersect\, emerge and unfold amid the region’s rapidly transforming landscape. \nAlamoudi’s snapshots of contemporary Khaleeji aesthetics playfully capture the give-and-take between developmental goals and their real-world manifestation. Viral memes\, talking falcons\, automated toy cars and insect light traps all function as tools to process accelerating change; together\, these works explore how the overarching desire for development is absorbed and rearticulated in everyday life. \nThe exhibition is curated by Amal Al Ali\, Curatorial Assistant at the Foundation. To 3 May. \nAbove: Ahaad Alamoudi\, Those Who Don’t Know Falcons Grill Them (still)\, (2018)

She will be using a Dubai Opera Limited Edition Steinway piano.

SUMMARY:Noura Ali-Ramahi: I Am Not a Chair. Am I a Fox?
DESCRIPTION:This solo show includes works created over several years\, using acrylic\, pastel\, ink\, charcoal\, and found materials such as wood\, fabric\, and recycled objects. At the centre of the exhibition is the recurring image of the chair\, appearing as a symbol of structure\, expectation\, and imposed identity. Opposite it stands the fox: alert\, untamed\, and in motion\, representing instinct\, freedom\, and a refusal to remain fixed. \nTo 18 March.
