SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Daniel Arsham: What Remains
DESCRIPTION:A solo show by the American artist Daniel Arsham\, known for his works of ‘fictional archaeology’ expressed through sculpture\, architecture\, drawing\, and film – what he calls “future relics of the present.” This exhibition marks the 24th collaboration between the artist and Perrotin\, a partnership that has spanned more than two decades.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohammed Joha: Houselessness
DESCRIPTION:In his latest work\, Palestinian artist Mohammed Joha redefines collage as “an architecture of rupture and reassembly\, both a method and a metaphor”. His works bring together scraps of fabric\, paper\, cardboard\, plastic and other salvaged materials\, textures pulled from shattered environments and fragments of personal history\, to form compressed\, jostling topographies; they convey not only violence and destruction\, but also endurance and resistance: a continuation of life within erasure.

SUMMARY:The Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:The Russian State Ballet Mari El is touring a selection of classic ballets around the UAE this week. This time it’s Tchaikovsky’s evergreen seasonal favourite “in a dazzling production that blends classic choreography with fresh expression”. There are shows at 2pm and 7pm\, which sounds like hard work for the corps de ballet … As usual with Zabeel Theatre shows\, ticket holders get a 20% discount on food and drink at the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray.

SUMMARY:An Unwritten Country: Frauke Heard-Bey in conversation with Meitha Al Mazrooei
DESCRIPTION:Historian and author Frauke Heard-Bey joins scholar Meitha Almazrooei to discuss the long arc of writing and archiving history. Heard-Bey’s landmark publication From Trucial States to United Arab Emirates\, first published in 1982\, is an essential source for anyone interested in the development of the country; its author is a thoughtful and inspiring speaker on the subject of the role of documentation and the historical record. This should be a fascinating conversation about attending to the past in the present moment. \nThis is a public event associated with the Jameel’s Night School 2026\, an intensive five-week seminar programme (which itself is now fully subscribed).

SUMMARY:Sunday Night Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Dubomedy’s standup night at Social Distrikt returns. This has become a bit of a fixture: good vibes\, good comedy\, and “you never know who will pop in”. Recommended. \nIt’s free\, but it’s getting popular\, so pre-booking is recommended to get a seat. And there’s a minimum spend of one drink or food item (which you were probably going to get anyhow).

SUMMARY:Tamerlano
DESCRIPTION:The second performance of this spectacular “reimagining” of Handle’s opera by the flamboyant director and designer Stefano Poda. It blends Handel’s score with “a new musical concept” by composer Kirill Richter that weaves in traditional Uzbek instruments.  The sets feature monumental structures inspired by Timurid architecture\, kinetic installations\, and immersive lighting; and Poda has assembled more than 160 artists — singers\, ballet dancers\, the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan\, the State Choir\, and a number of national ensembles — to create a world of music\, movement\, and visual poetry. The scale\, ambition and expense are all impressive; as the blurb has it\, “Dubai has never witnessed an operatic production of this magnitude”. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Besher Koushaji: Moments of Hope
DESCRIPTION:Koushaji’s exhibitions continues his exploration of memory\, resilience\, and the human condition with a new body of work that “reflects on a world shaped by displacement\, conflict\, and uncertainty\, yet illuminated by fleeting moments of beauty and strength”. His signature is a richly layered canvas through which Koushaji weaves symbols of cultural memory such as lemons\, pomegranates\, and flowers as metaphors of endurance and renewal; at the heart of his compositions stands the figure of the woman\, embodying continuity\, tenderness\, and quiet power.

SUMMARY:Jumana Emil Abboud: The Storyteller and the Obedient Tide
DESCRIPTION:Jumana Emil Abboud’s first solo exhibition in the Emirates draws on the lineage of Palestinian folktales and their continued resonance in the present – how stories inhabit landscapes\, shape personal histories and collective memory\, and create an enchanted relationship to the landscape. \nThe works in this show are like traces and fragments left by the tide’s ebb and flow; “they drift across time and geography\, fact and mythology\, and are grounded in the context of the Palestinian struggle for liberation and return” says the gallery. “Mirroring the exhibition’s title\, the tide’s devotion to the moon’s pull and the storyteller’s slow telling prompt the central question of the exhibition: how do we carry light\, across oceans\, across ruins\, across silence\, without letting it be extinguished?” \nCurated by Indranjan Banerjee. To June 28. \nAbove: Jumana Emil Abboud\, Our Other Half (detail\, 2024-2025)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Kwang Hyun Kim: Flytrap Anthology
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Korean artist reflecting Kim’s belief that we live within a paradox where we can be both predators and shelter for one another. Says the gallery: “despite this contradiction we continue to reach outward\, to connect\, to hope and to build meaning. The exhibition becomes a meditation on the delicate and wilful act of living\, offering an intimate look at how desire\, solitude\, tenderness and contradiction coexist within every human heart …” \nKim’s father worked as a cartoonist\, his mother as an illustrator\, and he trained in traditional Korean painting: it’s no surprise his works are full of imagery\, narrative and symbolism with a strong vein of spiritual iconography and a distinctive visual language. The flytrap recurring in these paintings is a metaphor that suggests the inevitability of wounding each other and the emotional tension between intimacy and self-protection; within this ecosystem Kim places long-standing characters Pipzin (representing intuition and inner clarity) and Gatak (who “moves endlessly between cultivation and desire\, planting and harvesting\, seeking and resisting”). Refined brushwork and layered acrylic surfaces heighten this emotional landscape.

SUMMARY:RUSTING ECHOES
DESCRIPTION:Works by Yoshi (Aisha Al Ali)\, Ammar Al Banna\, Ahmed Al Kuwaiti and Shaikha Al Shamsi. The theme is time as both a material and emotional presence\, expressed through processes of transformation\, memory\, repetition\, and decay – so time not as a measured unit\, but as something felt through texture\, resonance\, and change. “The artists engage in slow\, process-driven methods that register time through touch\, material\, and repetition” and the exhibition “reflects on how time manifests quietly through change\, decay\, and resonance\, revealing both impermanence and continuity in the marks it leaves …” It is curated by art educator and researcher Sarrah Bashir. \nTo 15 February.

SUMMARY:Yuyu Zhitong: Serendipity
DESCRIPTION:The debut solo exhibition in the Middle East for the Chinese-born London-based artist\, known for her luscious sweeps of colour and a mordant wit (“Good Girls Go To Heaven\, Cool Girls Go Everywhere”). This show presents a new body of paintings that develops her intuitive yet disciplined approach to abstraction; working without preparatory sketches\, Zhitong allows each composition to emerge through a continuous process of construction and reconfiguration\, guided by trained intuition and attentive perception. Gesture\, rhythm\, and colour operate as structural elements\, shaping works that balance spontaneity with control. \nThe gallery says the exhibition title refers to the ability to recognise meaning within chance encounters: “for Zhitong\, painting becomes a site where intuition meets uncertainty\, and where form and significance emerge through observation rather than intention. Each work captures a moment of alignment between perception\, emotion\, and structure …” \nTo 11 February.

This time it explores a pivotal moment in art history shaped by political upheaval\, intellectual transformation\, and shifting social ideals in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Featuring the works of Delacroix\, David\, Goya\, and Turner\, the lecture traces the transition from academic tradition to expressive\, emotionally charged\, and socially engaged forms of painting. \n

SUMMARY:Urdu Worlds
DESCRIPTION:A contemporary art exhibition dedicated to the Urdu language: accoridng to Ishara\, “the show explores how language provides the tools with which we create and shape our internal ‘worlds’. Words\, rather than simply describing our surroundings\, give rise to our private lived experiences and shared cultural understandings”. \nCurated by Hammad Nasar\, the exhibition is a visual conversation around language between Ali Kazim and Zarina (it’s also the first comprehensive presentation of Kazim’s works in the GCC). Born in Aligarh\, India\, Zarina weaves Urdu script\, proverbs and poetry into her delicate print works; Ali Kazim\, a multimedia artist based in Lahore\, Pakistan\, grounds his ‘Urdu world’ in a sense of place while exhibiting an eclecticism of influences that reflects the composite and layered history of the language. \nTo 31 May. \nAbove: Ali Kazim\, Untitled (Votive Objects) (2022). SUMMARY:Ras Al Khaimah Art 2026 Festival
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years the Ras Al Khaimah Art Festival has grown into a solid contributor to the UAE’s arts and culture scene\, with a community-oriented twist to the mix of exhibitions\, performances\, workshops and film screenings. There’s always a theme – this year it’s ‘Civilizations’\, a catch-all which should be able to accommodate just about any kind of culture – but the characteristic feature is the community engagement and the strong sense of RAK itself being part of the festival. \nIt has an excellent site at Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village\, which is where most of the exhibitions and events happen – exhibitions are open for the whole of the festival (16 January to 8 February)\, but performances and other one-offs occupy the three weekends. \nThis first weekend sees guided art and heritage tours\, several workshops – including calligraphy\, light art\, traditional agriculture\, and a two-day Photowalk and Film Photography masterclass – and live performances. They kick off with AlMaydee’s soulful soft rock (Friday\, 9-9.45pm) and the Saturday stage gets Luiza (jazzy pop\, great voice) followed by the AFCENT Band (that’s the official US Air Forces Central ensemble with a signature mix of pop\, rock\, and big band jazz). \nElsewhere in the village there’s Alana Hicks with a one-woman show titled Voices in the Dark (“a thoughtful exploration of identity\, culture\, and the threads that bind us: Saturday 6pm) and James Scarr with his excellent Mime Show (Sunday 6pm). \nNew for 2026 is The Hidden Table\, a curated culinary programme that expands the festival into gastronomy by positioning food as a form of cultural storytelling; the first two weekends get Chama\, an open-fire dining experience by Portuguese chef Tiago Pazzini with no fixed menu (“each evening is guided by seasonality\, elemental cooking\, and instinct\, allowing cuisine to unfold as a live\, creative expression”). The final weekend it’s Restaurant Pine\, the creation of Northumberland chefs Cal Byerley and Ian Waller to celebrate “the rhythm of the seasons [and] a modern echo of ancient land”. \nChama will cost you AED 350 but entrance to the festival and most of the other happenings are free\, including the live music. Preregistration is required for the spaces-limited events like the workshops; check out the full first-weekend programme here.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Lala Rukh II: The importance of staying quiet
DESCRIPTION:The first part of this series\, Lala Rukh I\, presented a selection of photographs from the artist’s archives during her years at the University of Chicago (1974-76). Its speculative framework helped us to stage the evolution of Lala’s photographic sensibility\, as she refined her sense of composition\, framing\, and perception. This second exhibition of The importance of staying quiet completes the two-part observational inquiry into Lala Rukh’s photographic practice\, showing how it moved toward abstraction. The exhibition builds parallels across different bodies of work\, tracing how Lala both used and broke down photographic technique\, the visual\, and the conceptual into photo-documentation\, unique photo works\, video\, and drawing.
