SUMMARY:Monty Python's Spamalot
DESCRIPTION:The final two performances (thyere are shows at 2pm and 7.30pm) for this irreverent musical parody of Arthurian legend\, based on the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It’s funny and clever\, and it’s brought to us by the Abu Dhabi Choral Group\, the UAE’s longest established amateur music group – now in its 45th season\, and with more than 75 shows in its back catalogue. Recommended.

SUMMARY:The Addams Family – A New Musical
DESCRIPTION:The final performances (shows at 2.30 and 7.30pm) for this musical sequel to the original Addams Family story by MTDXB. Wednesday Addams\, the ultimate princess of darkness\, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet\, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough\, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now\, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before: keep a secret from his beloved wife\, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents … \nClaire Bennett directs\, the musical director is Adam Laird. The production has a cast of 50\, a live 12-piece band\, and a “stunning” professionally built set. We’re promised “a number of showstopper songs” (when we saw a version of the show a while ago we counted around 20 of them\, and particularly liked the Move Towards the Darkness finale) “and elaborate dance routines”. Sounds like a load of fun …

SUMMARY:CineMAS – Bayn al Khaleej
DESCRIPTION:Gulf Shorts – Past and Present \n\nA program of short films from the Gulf region by filmmakers looking at the past through personal and cultural histories. \n3pm Clouds dir Muzna Alumusafer (2020) 15 mins \nA journey inside a tribal society undergoing transformation\, shot with intimacy and palpable empathy: Dablan\, a widower\, lives with his children in a traditional village in the south of Oman. He faces pressure from his tribe to kill a leopard threatening the village — pressure that increases when he resolves to set the animal free. \nThere’s a post- screening discussion with the director. \n3.20pm VHS Tape: Replaced dir Maha Al-Saati (2022) 17 mins \nSet in 1987\, a young black Saudi man attempts to impress his crush by mimicking an iconic 1980s singer. In the face of cruel twists of fate\, the bond they build through cinema can never be broken. \n4pm And Then They Burn The Sea dir Majid Al-Remaih (2021) 13 mins \nMajid Al-Remaih’s documentary is an elegiac contemplation of his mother’s gradual and terminal memory loss. Weaving personal family archives\, re-enacted dreams and rituals\, the film underlines the promise of cinema as a medium for memories\, even at their most irretrievable. \n5pm The Falconer dir Adam Sjöberg and Seanne Winslow (2021) 100 mins \nInspired by true events\, The Falconer describes the relationship of two friends in Oman – Tariq\, the son of a poor beekeeper\, and Cai\, a privileged Westerner. Then Tariq promises to help his sister escape from an abusive marriage via a daring plan to sell animals stolen from the zoo where the two friends work. Forced to wrestle with morally complex choices\, the vast distance between their worlds is exposed. \n  \nUAE Short Films – Family Matters \n\nA programme of shorts made in the UAE on the various stages of family relationships. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the directors. \n7pm 1-0 dir Nada Elazhary (2017) 10 mins \nWhen a flirty text to her beau accidentally gets sent to her dad’s phone instead\, a shy teenager must do whatever it takes to delete the message before her dad checks his phone. \n7.15pm Mommy dir Ahmed Almulla (2019) 6 mins \nSuhail’s date with Leila seems to be going well\, but then things start to unravel. The main reason? Suhail’s mother is in his ear\, and she is controlling every step Suhail takes. \n7.25pm Mid-Distance dir Hamad Saghran (2022) 11 mins \nEx-fiancés Maysaa and Bader meet in the road when Maysaa’s car breaks down. A dialogue between them begins where their relationship ended. \n7.35pm Bundle of Joy dir Majed Alzubaidi (2023) 7 mins \nOn the eve of his first childbirth\, Hamad\, struggles with the possibility that his life will go downwards once he becomes a father. \n7.45pm Unveiling Selma dir Mariam Alserkal and Maaria Sayed (2022) 14 mins \nSelma divides her days between her seven-year-old daughter and the daily household chores\, until she decides to take a stand for herself. \n8pm Sheikh of Mussafah dir Waleed Al Madani (2015) 10 mins \nAn exploration of a man’s unstable relationship with the father who raised him amid his mechanic’s shop and tow truck business in Abu Dhabi’s industrial area. \n8.10pm Ranapakhara dir Swapna Kurup (2018) 10 mins \nIn a community centre in Dubai\, Indian classical dancer Vonita Singh bring movement to the lives of people affected by Parkinson’s Disease. \n9.30pm Primary Organs dir Michael John Whelan (2021) 43 mins \nThrough slow-paced language and choreographed underwater scenes\, Primary Organs explores local relationships to the sea along the Arabia Gulf\, echoes of petro-state neocolonialism\, and the roles of complicity and gesture in our climate crisis. Punctuating this journey is the voice of the marine biologist who shares her poetic observations and trepidation for the future. \nThe CineMAS contemporary Arab cinema series is a mini-festival of independent films curated by Hind Mezaina and presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program in partnership with the NYUAD Arts Center. SUMMARY:CineMAS Love Is Not An Orange / Super 8 Years / Silences of the Palace
DESCRIPTION:3pm Love Is Not An Orange dir Otilia Babara (2022) \nIn the early 1990s\, women left Moldova in large numbers to provide for their families. Unable to return home\, they found a peculiar way to stay in touch: sending large cardboard boxes filled with the kind of gifts and food Romanians could only dream about in those days. In return\, their children would send videotapes. \nThrough these intimate private archives\, Otilia Babara depicts the fragility of family bonds through the eyes of a generation of mothers and daughters who were forced to live apart to survive. In doing so\, she portrays a post-soviet country caught at a crossroads of history — in which women were unwittingly put in charge of making the transition from communism to capitalism. \nRomanian with English subtitles. \n5pm The Super 8 Years dir David Ernaux-Briot\, Annie Ernaux (2022) \nFor over decade from 1972\, Philippe Ernaux used a Super 8 camera to capture family life\, from distant journeys to intimate moments. In this film made with her son David Ernaux-Briot\, Annie Ernaux (winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature) reflects on the stories told in the margins of the footage\, or beyond. As the children grew older and the marriage begins to come unstuck\, what remains is the film bearing weathered witness to what once was … \nFrench with English subtitles. Presented in collaboration with Institut Français. There’s a post-screening discussion between Hind Mezaina and Yann Rodier\, Head of History Department at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi. \n7.30pm Silences of the Palace dir Moufida Tlatli (1996) \nThe patriarchs of the Tunisian elite marry within their own class but enjoy as concubines the women who serve the household and live downstairs. In adolescence\, Alia\, the child of one of these upstairs–downstairs relationships\, becomes increasingly aware of her own mother’s predicament in this power dynamic; Alia herself does not feel liberated\, even by the musical talent which has given her a career. She must confront her own past before she can come to terms with her mother’s life and death\, and thereby free herself. \nFrench with English subtitles. \nThe CineMAS contemporary Arab cinema series is a mini-festival of independent films curated by Hind Mezaina and presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program in partnership with the NYUAD Arts Center. Day tickets are AED 30\, weekend (Saturday & Sunday) tickets are AED 50\, a full-week pass is AED 150..

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Classics 2023: Yo-Yo Ma & Kathryn Stott
DESCRIPTION:The celebrated cellist is accompanied on piano by his long-time friend and collaborator Kathryn Stott. We don’t know what the programme will be\, but their pandemic album Songs of Comfort and Hope had 21 tracks ranging across modern arrangements of traditional folk tunes\, canonical pop songs\, jazz standards\, and mainstays from the western classical repertoire. That could make for a promising evening; Yo-Yo Ma’s current obsession though is Our Common Nature\, “a celebration of the ways nature can reinvigorate the human experiment\, reuniting us in pursuit of a common future …” It’s a broad and searching initiative that explores ways in which we can heal\, and enrich\, our relationship with the world around us\, typically being realised as left-field collaborations and on-site explorations that may well inform this concert. Prices start at a very reasonable level.

Packed with wild virtuoso dancing and thrilling gypsy songs\, the show is based on a 1975 Soviet romantic drama film by Emil Loteanu the title of which is usually translated as Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven (or sometimes Queen of the Gypsies); it’s the tragic love story of gypsy horse-stealer Lujko Zobar and the beautiful Rada\, presented as a tale of passionate love\, freedom and pride. \nThis performance is presented in partnership with the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:Nature Namur: film shorts and photography
DESCRIPTION:The International Nature Namur Festival (FINN) claims to be “the must-attend event for nature and beautiful image enthusiasts”\, attracting over 35\,000 spectators and visitors to the Belgian city each year for its three international image competitions – photos\, amateur films\, professional films – and its various nature activities. If you’re in Europe this autumn\, the 29th edition takes place 13-22 October; otherwise you can get a taste of the event at Alliance Franςaise Dubai. \nThere are screenings of the Festival’s award-winning nature shorts from 2022 at 10am onwards (and you get to vote in the Dubai public-choice winner). And at 11am the photography exhibition opens\, with images from the 2022 Festival plus finalists from the local UAE Nature Photography competition (selected by the noted Belgian photographer Michel D’Oultremont). \nOn top of that’s there’s regional 0% beers and hot Liège waffles\, which magpie can heartily recommend

DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. SUMMARY:Timur Akhmedov: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the respected Uzbek artist with new works alongside some that have already been seen. Akhmedov’s style is a surreal symbolism that is almost fairytale-like and frequently depicts the artist (and others) as characters in a story\, “with content that stirs both emotions and logic” as the gallery puts it. SUMMARY:M83
DESCRIPTION:The French (but LA-based) icon of electronica – originally a duo but for several years now the project of multi-instrumentalist Anthony Gonzalez comes to Dubai as part of a short world tour to promote his new album Fantasy. The ninth M83 release\, it’s been generally well received; NME called it “the most far-reaching album of his career: a record that’s entirely free of compromise\, and all the more enjoyable for it”. Pitchfork was a bit more sniffy\, asking for more raw emotion\, but noted the way the album’s “wide-eyed zeal signals the band’s continued interest in reliving those early pangs of wonderment that adulthood cruelly snuffs out”. Here’s the pre-release single from the album\, which doesn’t sound as bad as disappointing as Pitchfork suggests … Not sure how much of a band Gonzales is bringing to Dubai\, but he usually has four or five other players on stage: just as well\, since the album credits names 37 different synths or keyboards and a mammoth “effects and treatments” section that could well cover the Dubai opera’s stage knee deep with pedals …

SUMMARY:Candlelight Concert: Vivaldi's Four Seasons
DESCRIPTION:One of the most successful production in the Candlelight Concerts series – “classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live music candlelit performances”.  The Vivaldi favourite was written as concerti for violin and orchestra\, but it’s often arranged for string quartet and this is what we’ll be getting here – “illuminated by thousands of candles”. \nThe programme also includes Karl Jenkins’ criminally underperformed Palladio suite\, which runs at around 20 minutes; with the Vivaldi clocking in at 40-45 ot so\, we reckon this should give you slightly more than an hour of candlelit concert. There are performances at 7.30 and 9.30pm.

SUMMARY:Candlelight Abu Dhabi: Best of Chopin
DESCRIPTION:Fever brings its candlelight classical music recitals to Abu Dhabi for the first time – “a series of classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live candlelit music performances … by creating intimate experiences where fans can connect directly with their favourite artists”. In this case it’s Chopin that gets the treatment\, with Aldo Dotto on piano and a programme that does indeed look inviting (though ‘best of’ does set the bar rather high): \n\nNocturnes op.9 n.2\nNocturne in C sharp minor\nPolonaise op.44\nPrelude op.28 n.4\nPrelude op.28 n.15 ‘Raindrop’\nFantaisie-Impromptu op.66\nValse op.64 n.2\nValse op.69 n.1\nScherzo n.2 op.31\n\nThere are performances at 5pm and 7pm too\, but they were sold out when we checked (there may of course be returns).

SUMMARY:Fête de la Musique
DESCRIPTION:Fête de la Musique is an annual global celebration of music\, organised in France by the Ministry of Culture and in more than 1\,000 cities around the world by Alliance Françaises. It’s a day where free\, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks\, rooftops and gardens\, store fronts and mountaintops. Dubai doesn’t get that\, but it does have two performances by the Dubai Wind Band. In its 30 or so years DWB has seen a distinguished line of conductors\, and currently there are two baton-meisters: Adel Sahnoun (a distinguished flautist) and Melvin Rioveros (a former principal horn player with the Manilla Philharmonic Orchestra).
