SUMMARY:Culture Summit Abu Dhabi
DESCRIPTION:Culture Summit Abu Dhabi this year runs 8-10 December under the theme Towards a Reimagined Commons. Bringing together cultural leaders\, artists\, policymakers and thinkers from around the world\, this year’s programme explores the role of culture in shaping shared memories\, spaces and futures – inviting participants to rethink ‘civicness’ by questioning and building spaces for imagination\, conversation\, and action. \nThe theme will be reflected across the Summit’s three-day programme\, structured around a series of sub-themes that explore different dimensions of the ‘commons’ through panels\, case studies\, creative conversations\, interactive workshops\, and outcome-led reports. \nDay one will focus on Collective Memories\, exploring how both official and unofficial histories shape our sense of identity and belonging\, and how memory can contribute to diverse forms of civic imagination. The second day will explore Collective Space\, examining the physical\, digital\, and symbolic spaces where culture takes place\, and how these can be reimagined in ways that are participatory\, inclusive\, and sustainable. The final day will examine Collective Imagination\, looking to the future and considering how culture and creativity can help us imagine and build new shared worlds\, and the tools and frameworks needed to bring these to life.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Verapat Sitipol: Stream of the Forest
DESCRIPTION:The Thai painter Verapat Sitipol explores the relationship between abstraction and the natural world in this body of work; the exhibition considers how we experience nature as something in flux\, continuously shaped by movement\, memory\, and time. Sitipol’s compositions are articulated through stratified colour\, gestural inflections\, and subtle tonal modulations\, “conjuring fragments of forest\, terrain\, and light without anchoring them to a fixed geography … What emerges instead are environments that feel fluid and open – spaces shaped as much by perception and memory as by physical reality”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Bodies that Make\, Bodies that Grieve
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Shafeena Yusuff Ali of the Rizq Art Initiative\, this exhibition brings together contemporary ceramics by eight women artists based in the UAE – Nujoom Alghanem\, Mirna Bamieh\, Moza Al Falasi\, Malavika\, Parneet Pahwa\, Zahra Shafie\, Laiba Sherin\, and Haseena Suresh. Their practices draw attention to knowledge developed through making and touch\, and its longstanding place in women’s work and care. As Executive Director of the NYUAD Art Gallery Maya Allison put it: “The artists use the intimate\, tactile process of working with clay to explore the body\, emotion\, and lived experience today. We hope the exhibition encourages audiences to engage with ceramics not simply as objects\, but as a way of thinking\, feeling\, and communicating”.

DESCRIPTION:Major works by Shahana Rajani\, the recipient of the inaugural South Asian Video Art Production Grant\, Rohini Devasher\, and Sarker Protick that examine how land\, water\, and the cosmos serve as living archives of memory and history. Through photography\, moving image\, and installation\, the exhibition proposes that the environment bears the material traces of ecological change\, preserving them across deep time.

SUMMARY:The Muppet Christmas Carol: dir Brian Henson (1992)
DESCRIPTION:A Christmas present from Cinema Space – possibly the best film version of Dickens’ novel\, and it’s free. Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine\, obviously having a lot of fun) is visited on Christmas Eve by the Ghosts of Christmas Past\, Present\, and Future. Together with kind\, humble Bob Cratchit (Kermit the Frog) and his family\, the Spirits open Scrooge’s eyes and his heart to the true meaning of Christmas. A heartwarming and hilarious holiday classic\, told as never before. Yule love it!

SUMMARY:It's a Wonderful Life: dir Frank Capra (1946)
DESCRIPTION:Capra’s classic snow-laden tearjerker (five Oscar nominations) has James Stewart as a struggling banker (!) who becomes so disillusioned with his small-town life that he contemplates suicide. Fortunately his trainee guardian angel\, Clarence (Henry Travers)\, is able to intervene and helps our hero rediscover the true value of friendship by showing how much impact he has made on his home community. Nearly 80 years later\, Capra’s life-affirming fable continues to be a heartwarming experience for family viewing at Christmas\, courtesy of Cinema Space’s free programming.

SUMMARY:BFAF Book Club: If This Artwork Were a Book
DESCRIPTION:A creative session connecting visual art with storytelling: participants explore selected artworks from the Foundation and imagine that each one is the cover or opening scene of a book waiting to be written – with an invented title and a main character in a short plot and an drafted opening sentence. The group then comes together to present their imagined books \, hopefully discovering how the same artwork can inspire completely different stories depending on who is looking … A clever approach to both art and writing. Something to look forward to if Christmas Day doesn’t appeal?

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY All Manner of Experiments: Legacies of the Baghdad Modern Art Group
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Nada Shabout of NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art\, this exhibition investigates and celebrates the work and influence of one of the most important art movement of the mid-Century Middle East. Dr Shabout brings together work by the artists from the Baghdad Modern Art Group\, as well as those who the group influenced both at the time and in later generations. \nEstablished in 1951 by two of Iraq’s most influential artists\, Jewad Selim (1919–1961) and Shakir Hassan Al Said (1925–2004)\, the Baghdad Modern Art Group grew to engage many of Iraq’s leading artists\, architects\, poets\, and more; together\, they sought to develop a new art form that reflected the secularised\, modern society emerging from the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. Says the gallery: “Artists questioned the ability of traditional ‘Islamic art’ practices to present their contemporary realities\, searching for a more effective visual language. In this context\, modern art provided a conduit for exploration and was perceived by Iraqi artists as a global space of shared humanity …” \nAt the same time\, those artists were conscious of their role in developing a sense of identity for their newly formed nation\, alongside broader decolonization processes. “This set the stage for Iraq’s so-called golden age of the 1950s: a time of maturation for a generation of artists pivotal in initiating rigorous standards of art theory and practice\, thus charting new possibilities for future generations.” \nArtists included in the show: Faraj Abbo\, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji\, Himat Mohammad Ali\, Rasoul Alwan\, Suad al-Attar\, Qahtan Awni\, Dia al-Azzawi\, Bogus Bablanian\, Amar Dawod\, Ghassan Ghaib\, Faiq (Faeq) Hassan\, Mohammed Ghani Hikmat\, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra\, Rand Abdul Jabbar\, Fouad Jihad\, Saadi Al Kaabi\, Ardash Kakafian\, Salma Khoury\, Hanaa Malallah\, Mahmoud Obaidi\, Widad al-Orfali\, Khalid al-Rahal\, Kareem Risan\, Miran al-Saadi\, Mahmoud Sabri\, Naziha Salim\, Nizar (Nazar) Salim\, Shakir Hassan Al Said\, Delair Shaker\, Jewad Selim\, Lorna Selim\, Walid Siti\, Ismail Fattah (Al-Turk)\, Madiha Umar\, Khalil al-Ward\, Nazar Yahya.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd: As I Bask in Your Light\, it Seeps to My Soul
DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s second solo exhibition marks a significant evolution in his practice\, says the gallery – “one in which desire and divinity are intertwined and rendered in quiet persistence”. Previous works often situated their subjects within expansive landscapes\, imbued with a mythological presence; this time the figures shift throughout domestic interiors and intimate encounters\, all the while becoming increasingly human; “they are no longer vessels for projection alone but subjects encountered in their own right”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Juma Alhaj: Revelation
DESCRIPTION:The first institutional solo exhibition by Emirati artist Juma Alhaj is the culmination of his participation in 421 Arts Campus’ Artistic Development Program. Grounded in reading\, journaling\, and philosophical inquiry\, it explores themes of reflection\, solitude\, and self-discovery; the exhibition marks “a significant and ambitious evolution in his practice” according to the gallery\, expanding beyond painting into installation for the first time. \nVisitors experience it barefoot (the space is carpeted); throughout the exhibition\, Alhaj’s abstract inscriptions\, encompassing both writing and image\, extend across glass\, fabric\, light\, and architecture – “shifting with the environment and the movement of visitors through the exhibition”. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Yaw Owusu: Where the Tide Flows\, and the Dunes Gather
DESCRIPTION:The Ghanain artist’s second solo exhibition with Efie Gallery extends Owusu’s longstanding exploration of value\, currency\, and the social structures through which worth is assigned and perceived; it features textured canvases\, mixed media sculptures\, and – for the first time in his practice – works on paper. \nWorking with materials already embedded within systems of exchange\, Owusu considers currency as more than an economic instrument\, approaching it as a social language through which hierarchies of worth are constructed and maintained. Through accumulation\, repetition\, and transformation\, materials assigned little individual value take on an imposing presence\, challenging the assumptions that determine what is considered precious.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Tatiana Chalhoub: The Trees Now Stand Unpruned and Wild
DESCRIPTION:Bringing together personal histories and material experimentation\, this exhibition – the  first in the UAE by the Brazilian artist – reflects on growth\, rupture and renewal\, revealing how fragments of the past can take root in unexpected ways. With new paintings\, glazed ceramics and ceramic collages that drawing on the lush vegetation of her native Rio de Janeiro and the desert landscapes of the UAE\, Chalhoub explores the intersections of nature\, memory and material transformation; at its heart is the tree\, a recurring motif that carries both formal and deeply personal significance. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY The Territory Dreams Back
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition of newly commissioned and recent works by Rajni Perera\, Sancintya Mohini Simpson\, Soma Surovi Jannat\, Karan Shrestha and Rain Wu\, five artists who offer different perspectives on our relationship with place. \nSays the gallery: “The Territory Dreams Back moves between mythology and memory\, migration and ecology\, political power and the systems through which places are mapped and organised. At its heart is the idea that places are shaped by more than their physical geography. Land and water hold histories and memories; stories and beliefs influence how landscapes are understood; political decisions affect who can access and control land; and maps and infrastructure can change the environments they set out to describe …”

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Reynier Llanes: Elsewhere\, Within
DESCRIPTION:Reynier Llanes’ second solo exhibition at Firetti Contemporary includes works from The Tourist and The Poet series plus the debut of Bodega\, a new series in which the human figure gives way to transparent vessels overflowing with flowers. “Moving between the real and imagined\, the exhibition explores how places\, people and experiences shape who we become and what we carry forward …  Across Elsewhere\, Within\, boundaries between figure and landscape\, past and present\, and the lived and imagined remain fluid. The worlds we pass through never entirely disappear; something of them remains within us”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY 100 Years of Paul Guiragossian
DESCRIPTION:A landmark retrospective for one of the key modernist painters to emerge from the Levant in the twentieth century. Alongside significant works drawn primarily from the artist’s estate\, many travelling outside Lebanon for the very first time\, the exhibition – the first significant retrospective for Guiragossian since 2013 – includes archival photographs\, personal documents\, and other rarely seen materials that provide an intimate portrait of the artist. \nStructured as a chronological journey\, the exhibition traces Guiragossian’s artistic evolution from his early years in an Armenian family shaped by displacement and migration\, including the 1948 relocation from Jaffa to Lebanon\, through to global recognition. It’s the keystone of From a Shared Ground\, an homage to Lebanon through three concurrent exhibitions that explore how artists across generations have drawn upon experiences of homeland\, displacement\, memory and belonging. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Roots Before Petals
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that brings contemporary UAE-based artist Lana Khayat into dialogue with Lebanese modernists Etel Adnan and Helen Khal\, linking distinct practices across generations of Lebanese artists. Says the gallery: “Their work differs in scale and sensibility\, yet each built an abstract visual language from the natural motif and shared engagement with the memory of homeland”. \nThis is one of three concurrent BFAF exhibitions under the title From a Shared Ground\, an homage to Lebanon that explores how artists across generations have drawn upon experiences of homeland\, displacement\, memory and belonging. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Alfred Basbous: Sculpting the Line
DESCRIPTION:A selection of work by a pioneering figure of modern sculpture in Lebanon\, presented in collaboration with the Alfred Basbous Foundation. \nBasbous worked across stone\, marble\, wood and bronze\, responding closely to the particular qualities of each material rather than imposing a single form upon it. The human figure was central to Basbous’s practice\, over time becoming increasingly simplified and abstracted in his work. Bodies were transformed into rounded volumes\, openings\, curves and flowing silhouettes\, allowing solid material to acquire an unexpected sense of movement and lightness. \nThis is one of three concurrent BFAF exhibitions under the title From a Shared Ground\, an homage to Lebanon that explores how artists across generations have drawn upon experiences of homeland\, displacement\, memory and belonging. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artist's Room: Lulua Alyahya
DESCRIPTION:Marking her first solo exhibition in the UAE\, Lulua Alyahya’s Artist’s Room brings together new commissions\, loans and works from the Art Jameel Collection. Through her paintings\, Alyahya explores culturally embedded archetypes with tenderness\, humour and a critical inflection\, often engaging with representations of masculinity set against the natural and built environments of the Gulf; working on an intimate scale\, her layered\, gestural brushstrokes suggest a process of continual revision that contributes to the atmosphere and surreal quality of her paintings.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artist's Room: Shezad Dawood
DESCRIPTION:Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project centres on a 3m-high rotating and flickering light sculpture\, an homage to artist and writer Brion Gysin’s Dreamachine; driving the mechanism is a perforated cylinder emitting pulses of light at the frequency of the brain’s alpha waves\, said to induce altered states of consciousness. Originally commissioned for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2011 and first presented at Art Dubai that same year\, the work is part of the Art Jameel Collection and has rarely been exhibited since. \nHere the sculpture is presented alongside two smaller Recyclages prototypes and archival materials tracing the project’s history.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artist's Room: Walid Siti
DESCRIPTION:This Artist’s Room traces forty years of Walid Siti’s practice\, including new sculptural commissions and material from the artist’s studio. Across his body of work\, structural forms mirror geological formations\, rising summits\, Mesopotamian ziggurats\, and the Tower of Babel\, all alluding to a persistent\, often reckless\, human drive toward ascension. A newly commissioned large-scale sculpture\, Registry of the Lived\, reflects on the troubled history of Kurdistan\, displayed alongside the War Series\, an early ensemble of drawings and etchings from the 1980s made during Siti’s years of exile.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Spices and Wonders: Sailing the Indian Ocean
DESCRIPTION:This spectacular exhibition follows a thousand years of maritime history and culture\, charting the routes that connected the civilisations of Africa\, Asia\, and beyond. It documents the evolution of navigation and the techniques that enabled adventurous sailors to explore the unknown; spices were the prize\, and as people travelled\, so did ideas and cultures. Spanning from Antiquity to the 17th century\, the exhibition explores centuries of trade\, movement and cultural exchange through displays of spices\, textiles\, ceramics and other special cargos which crossed the ocean. \nThe exhibition is presented in partnership with the National Museum of Asian Arts – Guimet in France; it is curated by Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Guilhem André and Claire Déléry\, Curator of the Chinese Ceramics collection at Guimet in Paris. A second edition of this touring exhibition will be presented at Guimet next year.
