SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Tangerine Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Ayyam Gallery’s summer collective exhibition focuses on the colour orange: “occupying a unique space between intensity and comfort\, orange embodies both vitality and reflection. Associated with sunlight\, fire\, ripened fruit\, and shifting horizons\, the colour carries a rich spectrum of meanings that traverse cultures\, histories\, and emotional states …” For this show\, orange becomes a vehicle through which artists explore memory\, landscape\, identity\, and transformation: “the colour appears in varied forms\, guiding viewers through moments of energy and stillness while revealing its ability to shape perception and mood”. \nThe artists: \nTammam Azzam\nMouteea Murad’\nElias Izoli\nThaier Helal\nKhaled Akil\nAbdalla Al Omari \nSama Alshaibi\nFaisal Samra\nKais Salman\nKhaled Takreti\nAsaad Arabi\nOussama Diab\nLeila Nseir

SUMMARY:MONOCHROMA 2
DESCRIPTION:You don’t see enough ceramic art outside the interiors business\, and then it just tends to be bowls; so this show by Double J Collective (“the first project based in Dubai exclusively dedicated to exhibit\, promote and sell fine craft and design creations”) in partnership with DCT Abu Dhabi is well worth encouraging. Few details\, apart from “emerging and established artists [who] come together within a shared black-and-white palette”\, but we are promised “diverse ceramic practices … in a dialogue shaped by material\, perspective and artistic expression”. To 18 October. \n

SUMMARY:On Photography: The Shortest Shadow
DESCRIPTION:A three-day discussion-based practical seminar (evenings\, 6-9pm) investigating photography’s seeming constraint – its ‘short shadow’\, edging in on what already exists – and how that makes it a radical driver of modern art and thought. The seminar leader is Rohit Goel\, Director of the Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR). \nThis course is free\, and all necessary materials are provided by Sharjah Art Foundation.

SUMMARY:Spider's Web
DESCRIPTION:Agatha Christie’s second most successful play (The Mousetrap is probably uncatchable) is a country-house thriller-comedy with clues aplenty and a good helping of plot contrivances – including a most convenient hidden door in the study that of course leads to a secret passage – and a disappearing corpse. SUMMARY:The Marriage of Figaro Ballet
DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian National Ballet brings its version of The Marriage of Figaro to Dubai as a two-act comic ballet with a libretto by Yaremenko and Yuri Stanishevsky\, choreography and staging by Viktor Yaremenko\, and musical adaptation and additional composition by Oleksiy Baklan. \nIt’s based on Mozart’s opera\, but is a fully danced work with no singing; one review says it emphasises “hijinks rather than heartache\,” so we’re expecting something lighter and more overtly playful than the original. But the story is broadly retained\, the major dances and duets deploy the classical ballet vocabulary\, and the production uses lavish eighteenth-century costumes and palace settings; the music generally avoids the opera’s familiar arias and ensembles in favour of some of Mozart’s less-famous instrumental music\, supplemented by Baklan’s own composition. \nThere are further performances at 2pm and 8pm on 20 September.

SUMMARY:UAENO: To This Land\, We Belong
DESCRIPTION:The UAE National Orchestra kicks off its second season with the World Premiere of three new Emirati compositions in a concert programme that invites audiences into a musical journey through the UAE from its founding story and landscapes to the traditions\, memories and ideas that continue to shape the country today. \nEach of the three composers has approached that story differently. The Founder’s Journey by Khalid Nassir opens the programme; a six-part work inspired by the journey and philosophy of the UAE’s Founding Father. Ali Kano turns to the landscapes and musical traditions of the Emirates with his Homeland Melodies concerto\, bringing oriental instruments into conversation with the Orchestra. The third work\, by Fayez Al Saeed\, brings Orchestra\, Choir and poetry togethe; featuring the poem Lightning\, Thunder & Longing by Arif Al Khajah\, the piece moves between memory and the present\, tracing how identity and belonging are carried forward through time. \nAhmed Farag conducts the full UAE National Orchestra and Choir. The concert is repeated in Dubai on 20 September.

SUMMARY:Bashar Khalaf: The Field of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Two series of works\, Junk Garden and Protective Shield\, from the Ramallah-born artist. “The Field of Dreams is an exploration of formations of ‘steel’ in the public space from the perspective of the relationship between the self\, the object\, and the other” says the gallery. “It can be viewed as an interactive space with the fragile reality in which humanity lives.” \nKhalaf’s dreaming energy gives steel junk – bulldozers\, vehicles\, surveillance cameras – an chance for self-reinvention; it confronts the machine with its own existence\, giving it a tragic form and allowing it reposition itself over time. The garbage bins in Protective Shield were used during the First Intifada to block street and provide shelter from bullets ; in contrast\, the colonial system used steel barrels filled with cement to seal off the entrances to villages and camps. \nTo 8 November.

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Lulua Alyahya
DESCRIPTION:Marking her first solo exhibition in the UAE\, Lulua Alyahya’s Artist’s Room brings together new commissions\, loans and works from the Art Jameel Collection. Through her paintings\, Alyahya explores culturally embedded archetypes with tenderness\, humour and a critical inflection\, often engaging with representations of masculinity set against the natural and built environments of the Gulf; working on an intimate scale\, her layered\, gestural brushstrokes suggest a process of continual revision that contributes to the atmosphere and surreal quality of her paintings. \nTo 31 January. \nRight: Lulua Alyahya\, Skyscrapers (2023)

SUMMARY:Makers Days
DESCRIPTION:Dubai Culture’s Makers Days initiative is back – two days intended to promote creative manufacturing in Dubai by bringing together makers\, designers\, artists\, creative entrepreneurs\, manufacturers\, and fabricators with a view to promoting new opportunities for SMEs (both manufacturers and people who might want something made). It’s aiming to attract more than 150 participants for a programme of workshops\, talks\, panel discussions\, networking sessions; a Maker’s Connect programme will provide “curated mentorship opportunities”; and there will be guided visits to a selection of production facilities within the Al Quoz Creative Zone. \nApplogies for the lack of detail; we have gleaned this much from a press release but there doesn’t seem to be any online information either at Dubai Culture’s website or Alserkal’s. The programme will probably be published first on Instagram\, so maybe keep an eye on that. We’ll try to keep abreast of this and update when we can …

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Shezad Dawood: Skin of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Shezad Dawood’s 25-year career spans painting\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, film\, performance and digital media. Fascinated by ecologies and architecture\, his work connects art\, science\, music\, environmentalism and technology to explore both alternative histories and futures\, through a process of continuous world-building expressed as an explosion of colour and multi-layered narratives; and that should make this first mid-career retrospective of the artist a must-visit. The exhibition\, which is curated by Jessica Cerasi\, features more than 40 works including painting\, sculpture\, monumental film installations\, and interactive virtual reality experiences.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Laila Majid and Inaam Zafar: Body Quotidian
DESCRIPTION:Recent works by Laila Majid and Inaam Zafar that explore the human body and its presence in contemporary life through metaphor and symbolism. In Majid’s practice\, sculptural and photographic works unfold through slow revelation; Zafar’s practice explores themes of death and decay\, while foregrounding the body as a perishable entity. Bringing together these works\, Body Quotidian explores how light\, material\, gesture and atmosphere filters bodily experience; Moving between domestic scenes and abstraction\, the exhibition reflects on the quiet\, everyday moments through which the body continues to shape how we see and inhabit the world. \n

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Shezad Dawood
DESCRIPTION:Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project centres on a 3m-high rotating and flickering light sculpture\, an homage to artist and writer Brion Gysin’s Dreamachine; driving the mechanism is a perforated cylinder emitting pulses of light at the frequency of the brain’s alpha waves\, said to induce altered states of consciousness. Originally commissioned for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2011 and first presented at Art Dubai that same year\, the work is part of the Art Jameel Collection and has rarely been exhibited since. \nHere the sculpture is presented alongside two smaller Recyclages prototypes and archival materials tracing the project’s history. \nTo 31 January.

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Walid Siti
DESCRIPTION:This Artist’s Room traces forty years of Walid Siti’s practice\, including new sculptural commissions and material from the artist’s studio. Across his body of work\, structural forms mirror geological formations\, rising summits\, Mesopotamian ziggurats\, and the Tower of Babel\, all alluding to a persistent\, often reckless\, human drive toward ascension. A newly commissioned large-scale sculpture\, Registry of the Lived\, reflects on the troubled history of Kurdistan\, displayed alongside the War Series\, an early ensemble of drawings and etchings from the 1980s made during Siti’s years of exile. \nTo 31 January. \nRight: Walid Siti\, Mountains(2013)
