SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Safwan Dahoul – The Eye: An Aperture Into the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Safwan Dahoul’s most recent body of work continues his Dream series – an ongoing body of work investigating the dream state that he began back in the late 1980s\, exploring “the physical and psychological effects of alienation\, solitude\, and longing that punctuate the human experience at various stages in life”. This solo show features the beautiful and usually melancholic monochromatic style which has become characteristic of Dahoul; it also includes more experimental works that are being shown in the UAE for the first time.

SUMMARY:John Lilly and the Earth Coincidence Control Office: dir Michael Almereyda & Courtney Stephens (2025)
DESCRIPTION:John Lilly (1915-2001) was a scientist whose adventurous research played out against the backdrops of 1950s Cold War military science\, the drug-infused counterculture of the 60s\, and the environmental push of the 70s. Narrated by Chloë Sevigny\, the documentary tells the story of Lilly’s quest\, as one historian put it\, to “get his hands on the steering wheel of consciousness” — a project that relied increasingly on psychedelics\, leaving conventional science behind. For instance\, Lilly invented the isolation tank; and he was a primary explorer in the study of dolphin communication\, founding his own lab and pairing a young female researcher with a young male dolphin in a partially-flooded house. The film reflects the scope of Lilly’s interests\, the evolution of his public persona\, and his interactions with equally exceptional contemporaries: it’s not much a biopic\, though\, as a study of a few tumultuous decades in US history that showed how ideas can seep into culture. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. Screenings are followed by an informal discussion with invited guests.

SUMMARY:Song of the Sea: dir Tomm Moore (2014)
DESCRIPTION:This engaging animated feature takes inspiration from the Selkies of Irish folklore\, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land. 10-year-old Ben and his mute little sister Saoirse\, the last Seal-child\, embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea … The film is a really engaging fantasy that has beautifully nuanced but relatable characters\, gorgeous artwork\, and an entirely natural rooting in ancient folk tales and magic. As one review put it\, “Song of the Sea has an assured and timeless quality to it”. Recommended. \nScreens as part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Sunday Cinema Club – a free film followed by a talk or a workshop\, 3pm each Sunday from 5 July to 30 Aug at the Photography Gallery in Al Manakh. Films are child-friendly animations (5–19 July)\, pioneering science fiction (26 July–9 Aug)\, or “significant works of Arab cinema” (16-20 Aug). The workshop for this afternoon is on shells: “Imagine discovering a special shell of your own. What power does it hold? What story does it tell? Transform your shell with colourful drawings and words\, fashioning a unique object that carries its own magic and meaning …”

SUMMARY:Grüße vom Mars | Greetings from Mars: dir Sarah Winkenstette (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Tom is ten and different from other children: changes unsettle him\, loud noises overwhelm him\, and he feels most at home in his world of outer space — often dressed in his astronaut suit. When his mother unexpectedly has to travel to China\, Tom and his siblings Nina and Elmar are sent to stay with their grandparents in the countryside for six weeks. To Tom\, this feels like a disaster; but to encourage him\, his mother gives him a logbook and suggests treating the stay as a trial Mars mission. With Nina as the radio operator and Elmar as First Officer\, the small crew sets out to explore the “planet” Lunau — and to understand grandparents who seem to live by rules entirely their own. \nIn German with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Bookends Book Club: Yellowface
DESCRIPTION:RF Kuang’s 2023 satire of racial diversity\, cultural appropriation and plagiarism in the publishing industry garnered some mixed reviews; the Washington Post was particularly critical of the main character (lacked depth) and the depictions of publishing (perfunctory). Our own view was closer to The Guardian’s – “a hugely entertaining account of a brazen literary heist” – or  The Chicago Review of Books’ commendation of “Kuang’s darkly witty tone\, critiques of publishing and cultural exploitation\, and the all-consuming nature of internet personas”. Should make for some interesting conversation …

SUMMARY:Karak After Dark Vol 2
DESCRIPTION:The first iteration of this improv comedy night at the Junction was sold out and well liked\, so Tall Tales Productions and The Junction are coming back with a second. As before\, it’s a show created on the fly from audience suggestions; it’s inspired by the TV show Whose Line is it Anyway – “but we had to give it our own twist … with newer games\, more locally relevant themes\, and a cultural mixture promising to entertain you ‘pro-max!'” It’s in English\, but we’re promised locally-based talent from eight different nationalities (though as far we could make out\, the team for this show is Asad Raza Khan\, Basel Yafi\, Maria D’Cost Tarek El Saad and Salman Qureshi … all of whom are good).

SUMMARY:Sirocco and The Kingdom of the Winds: dir Benoît Chieux (2023)
DESCRIPTION:This slightly trippy animation features two intrepid sisters\, four-year-old Juliette and eight-year-old Carmen\, who discover a passage into the extraordinary world of their favourite book\, Kingdom of the Air Streams. Transformed into cats and separated from each other\, the girls will have to be bold and daring to find their way back to each other and to their real world; but they have to deal with Sirocco\, the master of winds and storms. Is he as scary as they fear? The Variety review suggested the film could be seen as France’s answer to a film like Spirited Away — “and yet\, there’s an originality to it that keeps things surprising”. The workshop for this afternoon is on wind chimes: in the whimsical world of the film\, wind becomes a force of adventure and transformation. “Engage with the wind in your own way by making a decorative wind chime … from paper\, ribbons\, string and mixed-media materials”.

SUMMARY:Dubai Bibliophiles: Giovanni's Room
DESCRIPTION:His publishers rejected Giovanni’s Room as a failure\, telling James Baldwin the novel would damage his reputation. Knopf claimed the judgement was nothing to do with the book’s content\, but Baldwin was convinced that the publisher didn’t want “a story of homosexual love between a white American expat living in Paris and an Italian bartender being told by a Black man from Harlem”. In the event it’s reception was distinctly mixed; but nearly 70 years after its publication\, Giovanni’s Room is considered one of the great novels of the 20th century – and writing about it in The New Yorker\, Colm Tóibín described Baldwin as “the greatest American prose stylist of his generation”\, which seems fair enough. James Baldwin’s groundbreaking novel of male desire should make for an excellent (if potentially risky) subject for the book club. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Farshid Shafiey\, Atieh Sohrab\, Baran Shafiey: All in the Family
DESCRIPTION:A group show for three artists whose work here explores the dialogue that emerges between generations of artists\, revealing how personal histories\, cultural memory\, and individual artistic languages intersect. Through painting and illustration\, the artists reflect on themes of identity\, everyday life\, and imagination\, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into the visual worlds that shape their creative practices. \nWith a background spanning painting\, illustration\, graphic design\, and animation\, Shafiey approaches art as a space for creative freedom and visual storytelling; his compositions often embrace humour and spontaneity\, drawing inspiration from cultural references and philosophical ideas. Sohrabi draws on her extensive experience in illustration to construct images that balance narrative sensitivity with refined visual language; her works often evoke moments of quiet reflection\, where delicate compositions and subtle details convey emotional depth and personal memory. Shafiey\, the youngest of the three\, presents figurative paintings that explore narrative\, colour\, and ornamentation. Through her exploration of form\, perspective\, and storytelling\, Baran creates scenes that draw from everyday experiences while opening space for imagination and interpretation.

SUMMARY:Safar Book Group: Free – A Child and a Country at the End of History
DESCRIPTION:Lea Ypi’s colourful\, hectic coming-of-age story through the end Communism in the Balkans\, published in 1922\, has won several awards\, made the shortlist for many more\, and features on several ‘Best Book of the Year’ lists. The shock felt by the Young Pioneer and Stalin enthusiast as the Berlin Wall fell and her country\, Albania\, began a messy transition to join the “free markets” of the Western world provides a rich if somewhat dystopian brew. Ypi is a classy writer\, and through the gripping narrative she’s able to prompt us to ask questions the relation between the personal and the political\, and more deeply about the meaning of freedom … An interesting and potentially productive choice for the monthly book club.
