SUMMARY:Sharjah Light Festival
DESCRIPTION:magpie has long been a fan of the Sharjah Light Festival\, the 14th edition of which runs 3 to 15 February. By contrast with the newer Manar Abu Dhabi and Dhai Dubai light art festivals\, SLF generally takes a more conventional approach – which typically means illuminating iconic cultural (and some natural) landmarks\, albeit with active light shows. \nThis year’s Sharjah Light Festival features light shows in 13 locations\, and there’s clearly been a deliberate effort to spread them beyond Sharjah City. Locally there are shows at Dr Sultan Al Qassimi Center near University City Hall\, Al Majaz Waterfront\, Kalba Waterfront\, the General Souq at Al Hamriyah\, Al Jada\, and the House of Wisdom. And it should be worth making the trips to Al Rafisah Dam\, Al Dhaid Fort\, Khorfakkan Waterfall\, the Hanging Gardens in Kalba\, Dibba’s AlTayari Mosque\, and Sharjah Fort in Al Hisn.  \nThere’s also the Light Village in front of the University City Hall building\, which will have around 55 F&B and retail vendors plus entertainment and activities. That stays open till 22 February. \n

SUMMARY:All Manner of Experiments: Legacies of the Baghdad Modern Art Group
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Nada Shabout of NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art\, this exhibition investigates and celebrates the work and influence of one of the most important art movement of the mid-Century Middle East. Dr Shabout brings together work by the artists from the Baghdad Modern Art Group\, as well as those who the group influenced both at the time and in later generations. \nEstablished in 1951 by two of Iraq’s most influential artists\, Jewad Selim (1919–1961) and Shakir Hassan Al Said (1925–2004)\, the Baghdad Modern Art Group grew to engage many of Iraq’s leading artists\, architects\, poets\, and more; together\, they sought to develop a new art form that reflected the secularised\, modern society emerging from the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. Says the gallery: “Artists questioned the ability of traditional ‘Islamic art’ practices to present their contemporary realities\, searching for a more effective visual language. In this context\, modern art provided a conduit for exploration and was perceived by Iraqi artists as a global space of shared humanity …” \nAt the same time\, those artists were conscious of their role in developing a sense of identity for their newly formed nation\, alongside broader decolonization processes. “This set the stage for Iraq’s so-called golden age of the 1950s: a time of maturation for a generation of artists pivotal in initiating rigorous standards of art theory and practice\, thus charting new possibilities for future generations.” \nArtists included in the show: Faraj Abbo\, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji\, Himat Mohammad Ali\, Rasoul Alwan\, Suad al-Attar\, Qahtan Awni\, Dia al-Azzawi\, Bogus Bablanian\, Amar Dawod\, Ghassan Ghaib\, Faiq (Faeq) Hassan\, Mohammed Ghani Hikmat\, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra\, Rand Abdul Jabbar\, Fouad Jihad\, Saadi Al Kaabi\, Ardash Kakafian\, Salma Khoury\, Hanaa Malallah\, Mahmoud Obaidi\, Widad al-Orfali\, Khalid al-Rahal\, Kareem Risan\, Miran al-Saadi\, Mahmoud Sabri\, Naziha Salim\, Nizar (Nazar) Salim\, Shakir Hassan Al Said\, Delair Shaker\, Jewad Selim\, Lorna Selim\, Walid Siti\, Ismail Fattah (Al-Turk)\, Madiha Umar\, Khalil al-Ward\, Nazar Yahya \nTo 7 June.

SUMMARY:Khozema Al-Aaed: We Walk on Stories
DESCRIPTION:Khozema Al‑Aaed’s solo exhibition reimagines cartographies\, reminding us that land absorbs our movements\, our wounds\, our hopes\, “becoming a living archive of human presence” as the gallery puts it. “The compositions resemble traces of cities once inhabited\, imagined\, or departed. Lines recall footsteps and pathways that may no longer exist\, yet continue to shape identity and belonging. Land appears not as a passive surface\, but as a living archive that absorbs stories\, wounds\, and hopes over time …” \nThe exhibition has been curated by Lina Mikati. \nTo 13 April. \nAbove: Khozema Al-Aaed\, Cities 2 (2025)

SUMMARY:Luis Olaso: Photosynthesis
DESCRIPTION:New work by the Spanish artist\, which the gallery says marks a pivotal moment in his practice. They were created in his new studio in Cádiz\, surrounded by olive\, almond\, and orange trees\, allowing nature to enter physically and psychologically; rather than depicting this environment directly\, Olaso allows it to act as a catalyst for emotion\, intuition\, and subconscious response. As the artist puts it: “Even when I work with plants\, flowers\, or everyday elements\, I am not aiming for literal representation; they are a vehicle to express abstract metaphors of myself and the moment I am living while creating the work”. \nTo 9 March. \nAbove: Luis Olaso\, Composition for a field of red poppies (2025)

SUMMARY:NVIDIA Studio Nights 6
DESCRIPTION:This free-to-attend event for the UAE’s creative community – including “leading creators\, designers\, press\, influencers\, and key industry partners” – is NVIDIA’s sixth such gathering; previous venues were in KSA\, Egypt\, Turkey\, and Abu Dhabi (back in February 2024). The aim is to showcase work\, connect with industry peers\, discover new opportunities\, and explore the future of digital artistry as facilitated (of course) by the NVIDIA Studio platform. Plus perhaps a bit of demonstrating and promoting for NVIDIA Studio. \nYou also get the chance to see the entries for the Creative Challenge\, which indeed you may want to enter – there are categories for 3D/CGI\, interior design\, short films\, photography\, and digital fashion. Entrants have to be using an NVDIA product and must submit work that reflects the event’s theme\, which is just ‘Museum of the Future\, Dubai’. There will be “exciting” prizes and trophies\, plus recognition on NVIDIA’s social channels; the deadline for entries is 25 January. More details and the entry form are here. \nYou can register here to attend as a non-participating guest (limited slots available\, and it looks as though you have to be approved too: the application form includes questions like ‘How will this event benefit your career’ which will presumably be the dealbreaker).

SUMMARY:Kavan
DESCRIPTION:This interesting production is the UAE premiere of a groundbreaking collaboration by the Mumbai-based music and street theatre group Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch\, whose work centres on caste\, inequality and social justice; and the Nalanda Arts Studio from Bangalore\, an organisation working on the research and practice of performing and fine arts with a focus on collaborations between Asian\, African\, and Middle Eastern artists and communities. \nNalanda’s Abhishek Majumdar directs this show\, which is described as an ‘Ambedkarite Opera’ – Ambedkarism being the set of ideas associated with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (1891-1956); an Indian economist\, barrister\, social reformer\, and political thinker and activist\, he is particularly associated with criticism of the caste system and a passionate belief in individual freedom. Majumdar is keen to emphasise that it not simply an anti-caste show: “a satirical opera gives us a way to speak about deep-rooted inequalities in society – and every society has such inequalities” he told us. \nThe storyline\, which is carried exclusively in poetry and song (hence the ‘opera’ tag)\, concerns a young man called Bejul whose father is a Lok Shahir\, an Ambedkarite people’s poet. After Bejul’s father gets killed\, his religious mother dissuades him from following in his father’s footsteps. The play is about Bejul becoming a Shahir\, a politically-aware performance poet; it’s a journey from acceptance of the status quo\, including compliance with the social norms like gender and caste\, to a gradual realisation that many of the constraints in his life are actually man-made and not predetermined. \n“Shahiri Jalsa provided our structure\,” Majumdar said. “Jalsas are songs of the Dalits\, Shahiri is the performance form\, both are associated with Ambedkarites. Over time Jalsa has also borrowed from outside music. So we leaned into it\, with all its contemporary and modern influences\, and created the piece out of that.” \nRead the rest of our backgrounder and interview with Abhishek Majumdar here. There are further performances of Kavan on Saturday 14 February at 7.30pm and Sunday 15 February at 2pm.

SUMMARY:Nazilya Nagimova: Follow the Snail
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the Emirates for the Münster-based Tatar artist Nazilya Nagimova brings together new works created specifically for her solo project at NIKA Project Space\, plus selections from earlier projects. \nNagimova explores memory\, migration\, and the search for belonging\, and these works share a thematic core: the artist’s ongoing experiments with felt (a traditional material of her ancestors)\, her engagement with the long histories of Tatar mobility and settlement\, and the idea of home as a mobile\, vulnerable\, and constantly transforming structure. Says the gallery: “The exhibition unfolds as a reflection on the fragility of shelter and on how personal and collective memory shape our intimate relationship to place and community”. \nTo 4 April. \nAbove: Nazilya Nagimova\, Jort\, White (2025)

SUMMARY:63Kolektib: Metro Diaries
DESCRIPTION:Reprise of a show commissioned by the NYUAD Arts Center and first performed there last summer\, Metro Diaries invites audiences to step into a world that reflects the rhythm of daily metro rides through evocative performances that blend spoken word\, dance\, and live soundscapes; the experience unfolds in vignettes that capture fleeting connections\, moments of solitude\, and the universal search for belonging. Passengers board\, interact\, and part ways\, each carrying a story; some encounters are lighthearted\, filled with warmth and curiosity\, while others reveal the deeper struggles and resilience of migrant communities. At its core\, Metro Diaries is a meditation on loss\, hope\, and grounding – three universals that bind us all\, whether on a train or through life. \n63Kolektib is an artist-led community based on a shared passion for storytelling\, movement\, and cross-disciplinary collaboration for performances that amplify underrepresented voices\, particularly those of migrant communities in the UAE; through projects like Metro Diaries\, the collective strives to make theatre accessible\, using public spaces as a canvas for social reflection and dialogue. \nThere are shows today at 2pm and 7pm\, with two performances tomorrow (15 February) at midday and 4pm.

SUMMARY:Kavan
DESCRIPTION:The second performance (of three) for this interesting collaboration between the Mumbai-based music and street theatre group Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch and the Nalanda Arts Studio from Bangalore. Kavan is described as an ‘Ambedkarite Opera’ – Ambedkarism being the set of anti-caste ideas associated with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (1891-1956)\, an Indian economist\, barrister\, social reformer\, and political thinker and activist. \nThe storyline\, which is carried exclusively in poetry and song (hence the ‘opera’ tag)\, concerns a young man called Bejul and his journey to becoming a Shahir\, a politically-aware performance poet; it’s a path from acceptance of the status quo\, including compliance with the social norms like gender and caste\, to a gradual realisation that many of the constraints in his life are actually man-made and not predetermined. Although the caste system provides the framework\, the piece can be seen as more generally about deep-rooted inequalities in society – “and every society has such inequalities” as the director Abhishek Majumdar told us. \nRead our backgrounder here. SUMMARY:Le Songe d'une nuit d'été
DESCRIPTION:A francophone Midsummer Night’s Dream\, directed by Culture Emulsion’s main man Stéphane Brismontier and featuring CE’s theatre school players – around a dozen of them\, which should make for a fun show on the Junction’s stage. It’s described as “d’après l’oeuvre de William Shakespeare”\, so we’re expecting an adaptation that hopefully omits some of the duller jokes and makes the most of the “mismatched lovers\, quarrelling royals\, mischievous sprites\, and a delightfully disastrous troupe of amateur actors”.  Culture Emulsion rarely disappoints … \nThere’s a second show tomorrow (15 February).
