DESCRIPTION:Khazaie’s solo show is inspired by nature\, particularly by trees that bend in the face of wind and storms yet do not break. The artist’s craftsmanship and thoughtful use of wood create pieces that are both grounded and transformative\, resonating with the themes of survival\, adaptation\, and silent strength. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition on the rich heritage of the Mamluk Sultanate\, a dynasty that ruled a vast expanse of territory encompassing the most significant Islamic holy sites for more than 250 years (1250–1517)\, with more than 270 works  gatheredfrom 34 museums and cultural institutions in 13 countries – including objects of art\, glasswork\, metalwork\, ceramics\, textiles\, coinage\, manuscripts and more. DESCRIPTION:Carol Kane is extraordinary as a Jewish immigrant arriving in late 19th-century New York with her young son Yossele (Paul Freedman) to join a husband (Steven Keach) who she hasn’t seen in three years. He’s embraced the new world and regards his wife as a throwback to a culture that he desperately wants to forget; she finds it hard to adapt to the new life\, too attached to the traditions of her former community to envelop herself fully in New York’s modernity. It could’ve been gloomy\, the underbelly f the Gilded Age\, but in fact it’s an entertaining and humorous film that earned Kane an Oscar nomination.

SUMMARY:Marwan Bassiouni: New Western Views (Preview)
DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the region for Bassiouni offers a first look at an ongoing international project that reframes landscape photography through the lens of lived Muslim presence in the contemporary West. Each of these photographs – taken from inside mosques across the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, and the UK – centres on a window\, an aperture on to the outside world that is rarely found in purpose-built mosques. Through them we glimpse familiar Western landscapes: traffic junctions\, supermarkets\, apartment blocks\, sports fields. But these views are framed by examples of Islamic visual culture – patterned tiles\, rugs\, wooden minbars\, and more. \nNew Western Views is a counterpoint to a long history of Orientalist image-making. Bassiouni’s landscapes are no longer the backdrop for conquest\, curiosity\, or romanticisation; they are simply what exists outside the mosque window. SUMMARY:Mahmoud El Safadi: Personal Sea
DESCRIPTION:Exhibiting for the first time in Dubai\, Lebanese artist Mahmoud El Safadi is showing a collection of miniature paintings on playing cards\, a series of works that reflect on the Mediterranean as a site of memory\, inheritance\, and continuity – “a littoral space that is at once connective and exclusionary\, communal and privatised\, fluid and heavily policed”. Referencing the card game ‘quatorze’\, Safadi layers imagery across the cards to create “a visual palimpsest where personal and inherited memory converge with broader histories of struggle\, surveillance\, and belonging”. \nThe backstory lies in the fact that the artist shares the same name as his grandfather\, who served with the British between 1939 and 1946. DESCRIPTION:With Find Your Eyes\, Benji Reid has made a performance that is unlike any you will have seen. Other artists have approached the creative process itself as performance; but no one else has combined photography\, choreography and theatre to make such striking\, often surreal images to tell an emotional rollercoaster of a story. \nFind Your Eyes draws on Benji Reid’s work both as an award-winning photographer and a pioneer of hip hop theatre to create images in real time in front of the audience. He sits at the centre of the stage\, his ‘studio’\, with three dancers posing for the camera; as he shoots his models\, the iamges appear on large screens. The performance priogresses with the photoshoot becoming more and more elaborate\, interwoven with episodes of Reid’s own life … \n“This performance is a meditation on tragedy and immense joy\,” says Reid. “It serves as a conversation with myself to unearth where I’ve been all these years – a dialogue about struggling with alcohol\, grappling with the immense pain of my mother’s stroke\, and contending with the depths of mental health struggles\, shame\, and guilt. SUMMARY:Bady Dalloul: Self-portrait with a Cat I Don’t Have
DESCRIPTION:Bady Dalloul’s first institutional solo exhibition in the UAE is an extended solo show curated by Art Jameel’s Lucas Morin. The artworks feature fragile heroes and ordinary people navigating systems larger than themselves; Dalloul repurposes everyday materials (including books\, matchboxes\, board games and magazines) to elevate everyday narratives into epics\, bridging high- and low-brow\, and importantly\, linking into  non-Western cultures outside conventional delineations and the Eurocentric gaze. \nFor example\, ‘Age of Empires’ – a new series of 50 works on paper specially made for this exhibition – uses onmyōdō\, a 19th-century Japanese astrology manual\, to contemplate the life and death of imperial power. ‘Matchboxes’\, a series of dozens of minuscule drawings framed in matchboxes on the gallery walls\, offer snapshots of everyday scenes\, news broadcasts and political developments witnessed by the artist over the years\, notably in his family’s native Syria. Inside a recreated apartment inspired by Dalloul’s live-in studio in Dubai\, multiple small works retrace the last five years of his nomadic practice. \nThe opening on 20 September will include a conversation between Bady Dalloul and Ahmed Makia\, Lucas Morin\, Ala Younis\, and Mizuho Yamazaki. \nTo 22 February.
