SUMMARY:The Laughter Factory Standup Comedy Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The August Laughter Factory showcase has the usual stops\, but with one additional name on the bill (most Factory tours have three comics). The acts are all good: \nDimitri Bakanov is a UK-based half-Russian\, half-Ukrainian comedian who has gigged all over the world with a tight\, slick routine – “dark\, charming and never far from a quality punchline” as one notice put it \nRoman Harris started gigging six years ago and almost immediately got a spot on the British TV game show Supermarket  Sweep. His style mixes anecdotal and observational comedy with a quirky take on his personal life\, relationships and random experiences \nAsh Rose is well known to local audiences as the UAE’s only Stand-up Magician. His timing\, crowd work\, wit\, charm\, outrageously good looks and modesty all define him as a leader in his field (it says here) … \nNoha Bashir (“face of an angel\, mouth of a sailor”) is a rising star of the regional comedy scene who recently had successful tours in the UK and Egypt. A magpie favourite\, and highly recommended as one to watch \nThe rest of the bookings are … \n16 August Studio One Hotel\n21 August The Club Abu Dhabi (8pm start)\n22 August Radisson DAMAC Hills\n23 August Dukes The Palm

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ihab Ahmad: I PUT MY BRAIN ON PAUSE!
DESCRIPTION:The new body of work in this solo exhibition marks a turning point in Ihab Ahmad’s practice – “a move toward instinct\, spontaneity\, and emotional exploration” as the gallery puts it. Smiling faces populate the canvases\, each a reflection of the people and encounters that have left a joyful imprint on his life; new materials\, oil and spray paint\, are applied on linen to create richly layered\, expressive surfaces that blur the line between abstraction and figuration\, “reflecting a deeper trust in intuition and emotional release”. \nAlongside the paintings\, Ahmad will be showing a new series of sculptures that echo the playful\, totemic language of this visual world.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd: Garden of Murmurs
DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s body of work delves into his Iraqi heritage\, while bridging painting\, drawing and fibre art – “reconciling the tactility of textiles with a sensitive examination of form”\, as the gallery puts it. “Focusing primarily on the male figure drawn to a scale slightly larger than life-size\, Kydd has developed a poetic dialogue between material\, identity\, and culture.” His use of natural materials adds another dimension to the works; so sage\, used for dyeing\, is not only part of the creative process but also a spiritual practice grounded in both tradition and personal exploration. Kydd’s use of mixed media – oil\, pastel\, charcoal\, natural dyes – enhances this interplay.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Architectures of the In-Between
DESCRIPTION:A group show featuring Nevine Hamza\, Atefeh Majidi Nezhad\, and Layla Juma. Says the gallery: “Each artist navigates the threshold between structure and sentiment\, material and memory\, between what is seen and what is sensed …” \nHamza’s work draws on her background in design to transform metaphysical ideas into “atmospheric visual compositions that float between sky and ground … using architectural elements to explore the boundaries between earth and sky\, the tangible and the intangible” (see above). Nezhad’s installations offer a more tactile investigation of space; her Zero-Gseries employs delicate lace and translucent materials that appear suspended in midair\, confronting the viewer with a sense of both weightlessness and intimacy.  And Juma’s minimalist geometries use a language of form and repetition that translates social structures into visual rhythm – through drawing\, installation\, and sculpture\, Juma assembles and dissembles patterns to reveal coded systems and moments of alignment.

SUMMARY:Thinking through Space: Curatorial Methods and Tools [day one]
DESCRIPTION:Now this looks interesting: a two-day workshop (23-24 August) that offers a practical and reflective entry point into contemporary curatorial practice\, showing how an initial idea can evolve into a coherent\, site-responsive exhibition. Through a series of guided exercises\, attendees will learn how to map out a topic\, trace thematic threads\, draw connections between artworks\, and shape clear\, compelling curatorial concepts that respond to audience and context. There’s a physical element too; ideas can be translated into engaging exhibition designs by working with the architecture of the space as well as elements such as light\, sound and texture. \nIt looks ideal for aspiring curators but would also be useful for emerging artists. The workshop is led by Sharjah-based curator May Alqaydi\, whose curatorial practice “is shaped by a sensitivity to material\, place and narrative form\, focusing particularly on experimental exhibition formats and spatial storytelling that move between the visible and the concealed …” \nAll materials will be provided It’s free\, but spaces are obviously limited and pre-registration is essential.

SUMMARY:Faraj Suleiman Live in Concert
DESCRIPTION:For his full UAE debut Suleiman takes to the stage with a full band to performing selection from his albums\, including his breakthrough Better Than Berlin and his most recent release Maryam. His music blends jazz\, rock\, classical\, and Arabic influences into a sound that is unmistakably his own. \nIf you were born in a Palestinian village\, a career as a jazz pianist and composer is no straightforward journey; Maryam is Suleiman at his most introspective and cinematic\, ranging from love and romance to a darker expression of transformation and grief. The melancholy is tangible\, but so is the warmth. His music may be instrumental\, but it tells us stories – his own\, but also those of all Palestinians too.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nazgol Ansarinia: Instruments of Viewing an Obscurity
DESCRIPTION:Recent projects from the Tehran-born artist. Nazgol Ansarinia’s work examines the systems and networks that underpin her daily life – from everyday objects to routines\, events and experiences. She’s interested in the relationships they form to make up a larger social context. Ansarinia’s practice reflects upon tensions between private worlds and the wider socioeconomic realm\, and “how local iterations of a culture might act as a site for the hopes and fears of those living in a (faltering) globalised world” as the gallery puts it. This exhibition of recent work ranges across sculpture\, installation\, drawing\, and video\, representing ways of understanding the role of architecture in delineating interior and exterior spaces and private and public spheres.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Maitha Abdalla: Between Metamorphosis and Reality
DESCRIPTION:With a mix of painting and sculpture\, this solo exhibition by the Emirati artist explores folklore\, mythology\, psychology\, and social constructs that shift between abstraction and representation. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE No Trespassing
DESCRIPTION:Ishara’s first summer exhibition\, curated by Priyanka Mehra\, features six UAE-based and South Asian artists exploring their relationship with the street – “a collection of individual experiences that alternate between chaotic and orderly\, gritty and beautiful\, uninhibited and curated … ‘No Trespassing’ looks at the streets as a site of deconstruction and reinvention\, continually shaping and being shaped by those who pass through them”. So signposts\, building materials\, pavements\, lights\, street art\, scrapheaps and human traces all become inscriptions of a city’s movement.

SUMMARY:Afra Al Dhaheri: Restless Circle
DESCRIPTION:A selection of works by Afra Al Dhaheri that explore the structural effects of tension\, repetition and time provides Sharjah Art Foundation’s first show of Autumn. “Working with materials such as cotton rope\, fabric\, cement and hair\, the artist emphasises slow gestures\, intentional movements and the fatigue that can build from ongoing\, repetitive and even invisible labour …” \nThe exhibition’s title comes from a newly commissioned installation with the same name; that draws inspiration from desert plants that create spiral patterns in the sand as they move with the wind. For Afra Al Dhaheri\, this offers a metaphor for mental exhaustion and collective burnout\, the sense of being endlessly pushed to produce or perform: “in other works\, repetition emerges as a condition of making\, a method shaped by the interplay of tension\, weight and the ongoing rhythm of doing and undoing”. \nRestless Circle is curated by May Alqaydi\, Assistant Curator at the Foundation. \nTo 4 December.

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Summer Collective: Wavering Hope
DESCRIPTION:Ayyam Gallery’s summer group show celebrates and questions the current siutation in Syria with works by Kais Salman\, Khaled Takreti\, Tammam Azzam\, Abdalla Al Omari\, Othman Moussa\, Safwan Dahoul\, Thaier Helal\, Elias Izoli\, Abdul-Karim Majd Al-Beik\, Mohannad Orabi\, Nihad Al-Turk\, and Yasmine Al Awa. \nAs Ayyam marks two decades of championing Syrian contemporary art\, this exhibition provides a testament to a generation that has not only survived history\, but shaped it – as the gallery says\, “For over two decades of conflict\, displacement\, and resistance\, Syrian artists have relied on their creative practices as a lifeline. Through these practices\, they have fought against erasure\, preserved memory\, and expressed truths too heavy for language alone …” The fall of the Assad regime in December has led to a new chapter: “even in this long-awaited moment\, a deeper question surfaced: was this truly an end\, or merely the next turn in a long cycle of hope and despair?” \nThis year’s Summer Collective echoes that feeling and also reflects on Ayyam’s own journey. Through their individual visions\, the artists in the ummer Collective map the emotional\, political\, and cultural aftermath of conflict\, and the fragile hope that emerges in its wake. Says the gallery: “The show is a reminder that in Syria\, hope is rarely straightforward. It is layered with doubt\, shadowed by memory\, and always vulnerable to being undone. Yet it endures. And in the hands of these artists\, it is made visible – transformed into images\, forms\, and gestures that challenge us to remember\, to reflect\, and to imagine something beyond despair”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Béchir Boussandel: Tenté par d'autres soleils (Tempted by Other Suns)
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai iteration of this show\, which is presented in collaboration with Kamel Lazaar Foundation and has previously been shown at B7L9 Art Centre in Tunis\, introduces a new body of work in blown glass – a departure from Béchir’s predominantly canvas-based practice. These works centre on the figure of the gleaner\, individuals who collect waste to survive. \nBorn in France but deeply rooted in Bizerte\, Tunisia\, Béchir works across painting\, blown glass\, metal\, and organic materials to tell stories of migration\, urban transformation\, and survival. Through a layered and symbolic approach\, he constructs a material language that feels delicate and durable. The exhibition’s title borrows from French philosopher Claire Marin: “Like migratory birds\, we are always tempted by other suns.” One can’t help but think of the gleaners (known locally as barbechas)\, those who have come from far away\, gleaning from the ground\, some still dreaming of crossing into Europe …

SUMMARY:Barcelona Flamenco Ballet: Carmen
DESCRIPTION:BFB reinterprets Bizet’s iconic work with flamenco elements that effectively adapt the original to the realities of contemporary society. “The values that make Carmen a woman of our time\, along with the adaptation of music and flamenco ballet infused with the distinctive signature of David Gutiérrez\, place the work within a new paradigm — that of the universal myth and 21st-century flamenco.” \nCarmen is pain\, passion and a cry for freedom\, all emotions that flamenco represents; and of course the story by Prosper Mérimée is rooted in the flamenco world of Carmen the gypsy and her love for Escamillo the bullfighter. The show mixes flamenco singing (with contemporary flourishes of jazz) with the original music; the choreography fuses flamenco ballet with contemporary dance. \nThis show has been reviewed enthusiastically in Europe and elsewhere; it should appeal effectively to fans of opera\, flamenco\, classical dance\, music\, and theatre alike. \nIt runs for around 80 minutes\, and three’s a second performance on 7 September.
