SUMMARY:Tagreed Darghouth: Gardens & Jungles
DESCRIPTION:The title of Tagreed Darghouth’s solo show references controversial remarks made by Josep Borrell\, the outspoken foreign policy chief of the European Union; he described Europe as an idyllic garden of prosperity\, contrasting it with the rest of the world which he termed a ‘jungle’. \nDarghouth considers the militarisation of civil society\, drawing on Stephen Graham’s ideas on warfare\, political violence\, and the transformation of cities by military and security imaginaries. Darghouth challenges Borell’s outdated binary perception\, suggesting that the traditional understanding of developed and developing nations has lost its relevance; she argues that new partitions\, walls\, borders\, and divisions have emerged\, creating a world that is neither safer nor more appealing than before. \nTo 30 September.

SUMMARY:Madama Butterfly
DESCRIPTION:The Hungarian State Opera/Ballet company’s second show for its Dubai sojourn is Puccini’s tragic opera\, and we’re promised that “elegance meets artistry for an unforgettable evening of beauty and grace”. \nIn turn-of-the-century Nagasaki\, the dashing American naval officer Pinkerton (Boldizsár László) has chosen for his bride Cio-Cio-san\, a naïve young geisha on the verge of womanhood (the Butterfly of the title\, played by Csilla Boross). His betrayal and Cio-Cio-san’ shame and sorrow leads her s to take destiny into her own hands; the final scene is one of the most devastating you’ll find in any opera. \nThis company performs the fifth and final version of Puccini’s reworkings of the piece; its production\, by director Miklós Gábor Kerényi\, has enjoyed success with audiences since 2000. János Kovács conducts the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra. \nThere’s a black tie/formal dress code\, but at these prices that shouldn’t be a problem for you …. \nThere is a second performance on 13 September.

SUMMARY:Letters of Light
DESCRIPTION:Held in partnership with Bibliothèque nationale de France and France Muséums\, this exhibition will spotlight the Holy Books of the three Abrahamic religions – the Quran\, the Christian Bible\, and the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) – exploring the historical context in which the holy books emerged\, associated scholarly\, talismanic\, and mystical practices\, and their role in intellectual and artistic history. As benefits the concept of a ‘universal’ museum\, there will be an emphasis on the universal nature of the biblical\, evangelical\, and Quranic messages and the ethical dimension they possess by highlighting episodes and figures that are shared by all three. \nIt’s not yet clear what artefacts and information will be provided to support the show\, but the Louvre and its partners have a lot of material between them; this could be a major show\, highlighting points of similarity rather than the exaggerated differences that so often make the news. \nTo 14 January. \nAbove: Giovanni Bellini\, Virgin and Child (1480–1485). SUMMARY:Connecting Minds Book Club: Sandra Piesik
DESCRIPTION:The second outing for this now-regular LitFest-style session with “renowned authors from around the world” features the award-winning architect\, author and scientist Sandra Piesik in conversation with urbanists and curators Ahmed and Rashid bin Shabib. The conversation will centre on the newly published compact edition of Piesik’s landmark book Habitat: Vernacular Architecture for a Changing Climate. First published in 2017\, it’s lost none of its force; essentially it gathers together essays by the world’s leading experts on vernacular architecture to examine how local buildings have stood the test of time and offer lessons for the future. The core of the book is arranged by climate zone\, from desert to tropical\, temperate to arctic\, showing how climatic conditions and vegetation affect the evolution of building styles; the excellent reference section offers information on materials science and engineering\, including how buildings have been adapted to contend with natural disasters. \nAmong the reviews: “Hefty\, handsome … works best as evidence and inspiration\, as the laying out the amazingly multifarious forms that human dwellings can take\, from which it might still be possible to learn” said the Observer. And Aesthetic called it “a landmark publication … a timely and urgent story of humanity’s capacity to create architecture without jeopardizing the equilibrium of the ecosystems upon which human life depends”. \nShould be a really interesting (and possible valuable) afternoon …

SUMMARY:Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory: dir Mel Stuart (1971)
DESCRIPTION:The original and still the best musical version of Roald Dahl’s classic story of Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum)\, a little boy with no money but a good heart\, who dreams wistfully of being able to buy the candy that other children enjoy. Then he wins one of five Golden Tickets to visit the mysterious chocolate factory owned by the eccentric Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) with the chance to win a lifetime supply of chocolate … Another goodie from Cinema Space’s free programming.

SUMMARY:Olaf Breuning & Edgar Orlaineta: Yours or Mine?
DESCRIPTION:This is looking like a major show for Carbon 12\, with two of its mid-career stars; the gallery believes the works of Edgar Orlaineta (b.1972\, Mexico) and Olaf Breuning (b.1970\, Switzerland) “weave a captivating narrative of hybridity and environmental consciousness … Breuning’s woodcut paintings serve as poignant reminders of the delicate balance between the beauty of nature and the harsh realities of human-induced climate change\, while Orlaineta’s sculptural forms\, moulded through biomorphic shapes and post-war design\, invite introspection on the meditative process of handmade creations”. \nOrlaineta’s practice focuses on the relationship between art\, craft and the industrial\, with overarching themes of humour and craftsmanship – both of which he regards as very serious in their unseriousness\, and are an important part of his conceptual and spiritual commitment to his work. \nBreuning too can deploy humour\, mostly as irony\, but his work majors on the interconnectedness between human actions and the depletion of natural resources. For Breuning\, humans have created a world that is too fast paced for even us to keep up with. In that\, he simplifies his process to make his visual language more direct. The symbolism employed becomes universal\, and the colours used become vulnerability expressed. \nTo 14 November. \nAbove: Edgar Orlaineta\, The Charged Clouds (2020)

SUMMARY:Memory is the Seamstress
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition curated by Murtaza Vali\, featuring works by Hangama Amiri\, Cian Dayrit\, Melissa Joseph\, Lebohang Kganye\, Jagdeep Raina and Raed Yassin. \n“Memory is the seamstress\, and a capricious one at that. Memory runs her needle in and out\, up and down\, hither and thither. We know not what comes next\, or what follows after.” The Virginia Woolf quote proposes sewing a metaphor for the unpredictable processes of memory\, its ability to suture together the disparate fragments of daily life into a narrative fabric that can feel both connected and disjointed. \nShowcasing the diversity within textile arts\, this exhibition brings together artists using a variety of techniques\, from appliqué and felting to hand and machine embroidery\, to translate the photographic into fabric. Countering the instantaneity of photographic capture\, and the amnesia it paradoxically enables\, the gradual accumulative labour of textile work reintroduces the complex and unpredictable textures of memory\, creating room for imagination and play\, for affect and critique\, softening the sharp contours of an indexical record into a collage\, an impression\, an annotation\, an image\, “and a capricious one at that”. \nTo 3 November.

SUMMARY:Abdalla Al Omari: Unsuspecting State
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition featuring recent work by Abdalla Al Omari – his second solo show at the gallery\, but his first as a represented artist. \nAl Omari is clever with his use of scale and composition in representing the mundane to express themes that are everything but that: “he captures our quotidian and intimate gestures alluding to our deepest secrets and regrets\,” says the press release. “Deep beliefs and the most discrete thoughts come through when immortalising moments of everyday life. The unspoken taboos emanating through the movements\, sexuality\, religion\, and addiction\, are all part of the conversation … All along\, Abdalla plays with anonymity\, keeping things universal: The trivial and banal shared by the ordinary person.” \nTo 8 November. \nAbove: Abdalla Al Omari\, Between Before and After (2023)

SUMMARY:Karolina Krasouli: Arodo
DESCRIPTION:Karolina Krasouli presents a series of new and old works\, paintings\, drawings\, sketches and photographs that explore the intersection of abstraction and figuration. Through a process of reading and writing\, she extracts a set of operations for ‘rewriting’ meanings and sensations as a novel language.  These works are produced in a meditative process reached through repetition\, “prolonged to an extent that they contain time”. Most of them are detached from any recognizable references to the physical world. The viewer may stand in front of them as in front of a visual field\, creating continually a different relationship between proximity and distance. \nTo 7 November.

SUMMARY:The Quiet Girl: dir Colm Bairéad (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for Best International Feature at the 2023 Oscars Colm Bairéad’s beautifully understated feature debut finds a young girl coming to terms with loss and the importance of family in rural Ireland. Nine-year-old Cait (a terrific debut by Catherine Clinch) goes to live with her mother’s cousin for the summer\, and Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley) and her farmer husband Seán (Andrew Bennett) take Cait in to help alleviate her parents’ financial woes. Cait finds freedom in this new world along with the attention she so desperately needs. But there is an unspoken grief in the house\, one that Cait’s youthful curiosity begins to uncover … In Irish with English subtitles\, and highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Samia Halaby: Lasting Impressions
DESCRIPTION:The big autumn exhibition at the Sharjah Art Museum is a major retrospective for the NY-based Palestinian Samia Halaby\, featuring around 180 works of various sizes from abstract paintings and sculptures to documentary drawings and digital works. \nInternationally recognised as a leading abstract painter and an influential scholar of Palestinian art\, Halaby says she uses visual abstraction to convert what our senses have stored in our memory – “what the viewer and I already know” – into abstract visual form; her work “mirrors our shared perception of the world we live in”\, as she puts it. \nHalaby is also dedicated advocate for Palestinian rights\, though her experience of exile and displacement from her homeland 1948 rarely appears as content\, though the 16 illustrative drawings that document a heartbreaking historical event – the Kafr Qasim Massacre of 1956 – are a notable exception. She does however suggest that being loyal to abstraction is itself a political act\, and certainly she references Palestine in the titles of some of her works. \nThe exhibition is part of the Lasting Impressions series\, held annually at the Sharjah Art Museum and focussing on prominent Arab artists who have left a lasting impression on the development and evolution of modern art in the Arab world. The extent and curation of these exhibitions has always been very good; given the rich source material\, we expect nothing less from the Samia Halaby show. \nTo 7 January. \nAbove: Samia Halaby\, Damascus (2010) Below: Samia Halaby\, from the Kafr Qasem Massacre series (2017) \n \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Candlelight Concert: Vivaldi's Four Seasons
DESCRIPTION:One of the most successful productions in the Candlelight Concerts series of “classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live music candlelit performances”.  The Vivaldi favourite was written as concerti for violin and orchestra\, but it’s often arranged for string quartet and this is what we’ll be getting here – the players are Gulf Strings\, the performance is “illuminated by thousands of candles”.  The programme includes the four movements of the Seasons\, plus Karl Jenkins’s criminally underperformed concerto grosso Palladio; the players are the Gulf Strings quartet (Klaudia Olborska\, Katherine Denton\, Anna Boden\, Rebecca Saxby). This is a new venue for the programme\, which should make for an interesting evening …

SUMMARY:The Youth Orchestra: Concert for Children
DESCRIPTION:The Youth Orchestra is such a good idea: the International Music Institute— one of the oldest music schools in the country\, founded in 1994 — runs it as a free-of-charge programme for would-be music students in the United Arab Emirates\, selected through audition. The young musicians get a year of rehearsals and workshops with a series of public concerts (four are scheduled for 2023). \nFor this\, its second concert of the year\, the Youth Orchestra will be playing “music for the whole family and all-time kids favourites”.
