SUMMARY:On Photography: The Shortest Shadow
DESCRIPTION:A three-day discussion-based practical seminar (evenings\, 6-9pm) investigating photography’s seeming constraint – its ‘short shadow’\, edging in on what already exists – and how that makes it a radical driver of modern art and thought. The seminar leader is Rohit Goel\, Director of the Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR). \nThis course is free\, and all necessary materials are provided by Sharjah Art Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Marriage of Figaro Ballet
DESCRIPTION:The final performances of the Ukrainian National Ballet’s danced version of The Marriage of Figaro. The story is broadly retained\, the major dances and duets deploy the classical ballet vocabulary\, and the production uses lavish eighteenth-century costumes and palace settings; the music generally avoids the opera’s familiar arias and ensembles in favour of some of Mozart’s less-famous instrumental music\, supplemented by original composition. \nThere are performances at 2pm and 8pm.

SUMMARY:Bashar Khalaf: The Field of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Two series of works\, Junk Garden and Protective Shield\, from the Ramallah-born artist. “The Field of Dreams is an exploration of formations of ‘steel’ in the public space from the perspective of the relationship between the self\, the object\, and the other” says the gallery. “It can be viewed as an interactive space with the fragile reality in which humanity lives.” \nKhalaf’s dreaming energy gives steel junk – bulldozers\, vehicles\, surveillance cameras – an chance for self-reinvention; it confronts the machine with its own existence\, giving it a tragic form and allowing it reposition itself over time. The garbage bins in Protective Shield were used during the First Intifada to block street and provide shelter from bullets ; in contrast\, the colonial system used steel barrels filled with cement to seal off the entrances to villages and camps. \nTo 8 November.

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Lulua Alyahya
DESCRIPTION:Marking her first solo exhibition in the UAE\, Lulua Alyahya’s Artist’s Room brings together new commissions\, loans and works from the Art Jameel Collection. Through her paintings\, Alyahya explores culturally embedded archetypes with tenderness\, humour and a critical inflection\, often engaging with representations of masculinity set against the natural and built environments of the Gulf; working on an intimate scale\, her layered\, gestural brushstrokes suggest a process of continual revision that contributes to the atmosphere and surreal quality of her paintings. \nTo 31 January. \nRight: Lulua Alyahya\, Skyscrapers (2023)

SUMMARY:Makers Days
DESCRIPTION:Dubai Culture’s Makers Days initiative is back – two days intended to promote creative manufacturing in Dubai by bringing together makers\, designers\, artists\, creative entrepreneurs\, manufacturers\, and fabricators with a view to promoting new opportunities for SMEs (both manufacturers and people who might want something made). It’s aiming to attract more than 150 participants for a programme of workshops\, talks\, panel discussions\, networking sessions; a Maker’s Connect programme will provide “curated mentorship opportunities”; and there will be guided visits to a selection of production facilities within the Al Quoz Creative Zone. \nApplogies for the lack of detail; we have gleaned this much from a press release but there doesn’t seem to be any online information either at Dubai Culture’s website or Alserkal’s. The programme will probably be published first on Instagram\, so maybe keep an eye on that. We’ll try to keep abreast of this and update when we can …

SUMMARY:Tour – Library Circles: Rend Beiruti
DESCRIPTION:Rend Beiruti guides visitors through her research display on the baqala as a vital urban entity in Dubai. The tour explores the histories of these neighbourhood grocery stores\, tracing how they have shaped and been shaped by the city’s rapid urban development over the past century. Through photographs\, mapping\, and archival documents\, the display brings together the findings of this urban investigation and considers the baqala as both an everyday space and a cultural signal. \nThis tour is limited to 15 people and will be conducted in English. Sarah Potter directs for the Junction’s resident company H72 Productions. Should be good fun. \nThe final performances are tomorrow (20 September) at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Shezad Dawood: Skin of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Shezad Dawood’s 25-year career spans painting\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, film\, performance and digital media. Fascinated by ecologies and architecture\, his work connects art\, science\, music\, environmentalism and technology to explore both alternative histories and futures\, through a process of continuous world-building expressed as an explosion of colour and multi-layered narratives; and that should make this first mid-career retrospective of the artist a must-visit. The exhibition\, which is curated by Jessica Cerasi\, features more than 40 works including painting\, sculpture\, monumental film installations\, and interactive virtual reality experiences.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Laila Majid and Inaam Zafar: Body Quotidian
DESCRIPTION:Recent works by Laila Majid and Inaam Zafar that explore the human body and its presence in contemporary life through metaphor and symbolism. In Majid’s practice\, sculptural and photographic works unfold through slow revelation; Zafar’s practice explores themes of death and decay\, while foregrounding the body as a perishable entity. Bringing together these works\, Body Quotidian explores how light\, material\, gesture and atmosphere filters bodily experience; Moving between domestic scenes and abstraction\, the exhibition reflects on the quiet\, everyday moments through which the body continues to shape how we see and inhabit the world. \n

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Shezad Dawood
DESCRIPTION:Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project centres on a 3m-high rotating and flickering light sculpture\, an homage to artist and writer Brion Gysin’s Dreamachine; driving the mechanism is a perforated cylinder emitting pulses of light at the frequency of the brain’s alpha waves\, said to induce altered states of consciousness. Originally commissioned for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2011 and first presented at Art Dubai that same year\, the work is part of the Art Jameel Collection and has rarely been exhibited since. \nHere the sculpture is presented alongside two smaller Recyclages prototypes and archival materials tracing the project’s history. \nTo 31 January.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY In Abstracto\, In Concreto: On Memory and Presence
DESCRIPTION:A summer-long group show for Luke Agada\, Tunji Adeniyi-Jones\, Ludovic Nkoth\, and Naila Opiangah\, curated by Brice Arsène Yonkeu – whose curatorial statement defines the show as “an encounter with works on paper and paintings that move between visibility and erasure\, between the surfaces of lived experience and the abstractions of memory”. It goes on: “the exhibition is less concerned with depicting bodies in their recognisable form than with asking how the body … becomes a vessel for history\, inheritance\, and imagination”; and “rather than presenting a singular mode of figuration or abstraction\, the exhibition unfolds as a spectrum of strategies. Within this spectrum\, three interwoven threads emerge: Memory and Inheritance\, where surfaces register the weight of what is passed down and endured; Myth and Imagination\, where hybrid or surreal forms generate new lineages; and Presence and Care\, where the body is both affirmed and protected as a site of tenderness and resilience.”

SUMMARY:Ahmad Tallaa: The Living Archive
DESCRIPTION:Built from layers of sand collected in the UAE\, chalk powder\, pigments\, and acrylic\, the surfaces of Ahmad Tallaa’s large-scale portraits at the centre of this show are dense and almost sculptural – as the gallery puts it\, “Faces do not sit on the canvas so much as emerge from within it\, as though the act of painting were one of excavation rather than construction. Cracks\, scars\, and accumulated marks become evidence of time’s passage …” \nTo 11 November. \nRight: Ahmad Tallaa\, Untitled (2026)

SUMMARY:Mohamed Monaiseer: 85 Seconds To Midnight
DESCRIPTION:Monaiseer’s solo show examines history through cycles\, repetition and flows\, while testing the unstable boundary between imagination and reality. The title references the current status of the Doomsday Clock and its measurement of humanity’s proximity to catastrophe; notions of war\, occupation and imperial power have long animated his practice\, and here he considers how they recur across contexts and generations\, altering borders\, enemies and technologies while preserving familiar structures of domination. \nThe exhibition comprises drawings\, paintings\, sculptures and textile works\, as well as a video installation. Recurring motifs in these works are absorbed from literary fiction\, popular storytelling and contemporary media. And dark humour runs through them; for Monaiseer it is a means of examining the performance of power and the fantasies through which conflict can be romanticised\, rehearsed and projected. \nElsewhere\, pixelated figures and fragmented grids evoke the digital mediation of contemporary warfare and our era of misinformation\, in which information is increasingly manipulated and corrupted online. Monaiseer has previously engaged with the historical construction of conflict; in these works he considers how conflict reaches us through technology\, through compressed images\, screens\, news feeds and endlessly circulating footage\, producing realities that are experienced at a distance and often manipulated. \nTo 1 October.

SUMMARY:Hisham Sharif: Allusive Veil
DESCRIPTION:Sharif’s first solo exhibition in the UAE presents an autobiographical and very personal series of works about the struggles of private and artist life in a closed society – “a vulnerable\, nuanced presentation of life”. The Bahraini artist uses colour to convey privacy and intimacy\, “expressive hues that meld harsh truths with illusions of what could be … Sharif’s approach ensures that his depiction of these taboos is conveyed through humble depictions that preserve a certain Oriental sensibility\, avoiding the shock value or censorship they might otherwise provoke. The scenes are all about ambiance\, a haze of what was\, what is\, and what could be”. \nTo 30 October. \nRight: Hisham Sharif\, Behind the Mirror (2025)
