DESCRIPTION:Rooted in her surroundings\, the work of Salmah Al Mansoori\, an Emirati artist from Abu Dhabi\, begins with acts of noticing: fragments\, residues\, and overlooked materials drawn from everyday life. These are reworked into new forms that carry both personal and collective memory; handmade paper\, infused with desert grasses\, palm fibres\, and natural pigments\, holds traces of landscape and labour\, while extending the life of what might otherwise disappear. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Noor Al Suwaidi: The Sky Forgets\, the Heart Remembers
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition of a new body of work\, curated by Cima Azzam\, Noor Al Suwaidi approaches colour as a field of sensation where form appears and dissolves within shifting tonalities – “figures hover at the edge of abstraction; colour gathers\, disperses\, and returns again … allowing forms to surface briefly before receding again\, like a feeling remembered but never fully named”. Alongside the paintings\, monochrome marble-like sculptures introduce a contrasting presence with absence of colour to offer a quiet counterpoint to the chromatic intensity of the canvases. And the gallery itself has been tuned to suit: “deep maroon walls hold the paintings in a state of quiet intensity … the architecture of the space has been softened. Surfaces are sanded and corners eased into gentle curves. The room no longer insists on edges. Instead\, it moves with a quieter rhythm that echoes the sensibility of the works themselves …”

DESCRIPTION:A great idea from Foundry Downtown – a group exhibition featuring artists based in the UAE who are not (currently) represented by galleries. The organisers describe it as “for the first time\, a selling exhibition structured around accessibility\, discovery\, and dialogue. The project seeks to encourage a broader public to engage with contemporary art with greater confidence and curiosity\, while offering artists an opportunity to present their work in a context that is both visible and commercially supportive …” \nIn that context\, the title represents a quite deliberate borrowing from retail – though the curators are keen to emphasise that doesn’t mean crudely reducing art to merchandise rather than “critically asking what it means to ‘shop’ for art at a moment when value is shaped not only by artistic quality\, but also by visibility\, narrative\, and systems of legitimacy”. Still\, it is a selling exhibition\, with works at “an accessible price point” …

DESCRIPTION:This Soviet-era silent film was one of the earliest to represent a realistic spaceflight\, including weightlessness. It’s pitched in the year 1946\, with Professor Sedikh\, who is planning to lead the first crewed exploration to the Moon\, denounced by a rival as being too old and too mentally unstable for the mission. Aided by his assistants Marina and Andryusha\, Sedikh makes the journey anyway – with a successful landing\, a few adventures on the Moon\, and a triumphant return to Moscow. DESCRIPTION:Subtitled ‘An Old Man\, A Young Man and Life’s Greatest Lesson\, this 1997 memoir by the award-winning sports columnist Mitch Albom is based on a series of Tuesday visits he made to his former sociology professor\, Morrie Schwartz\, as Schwartz was dying from motor neurone disease (the book was written in part to help defray Schwartz’s mounting end-of-life medical expenses).  Each chapter covers a different topic of conversation — including death\, fear\, ageing\, greed\, marriage\, family\, forgiveness\, and the meaning of life — interspersed with Albom’s reflections on his own career-driven lifestyle and flashbacks to his college years. The results are sincere and the writing skilful; but is it inspirational? Or even sentimental? \n

Ypi is a classy writer\, and through the gripping narrative she’s able to prompt us to ask questions the relation between the personal and the political\, and more deeply about the meaning of freedom … An interesting and potentially productive choice for the monthly book club.

Sohrabi draws on her extensive experience in illustration to construct images that balance narrative sensitivity with refined visual language; her works often evoke moments of quiet reflection\, where delicate compositions and subtle details convey emotional depth and personal memory. Shafiey\, the youngest of the three\, presents figurative paintings that explore narrative\, colour\, and ornamentation.
