DESCRIPTION:An ambitious large-scale group exhibition dedicated to mapping and navigation systems\, “telling stories of fast cars and donkeys\, spinning globes and street barricades\, cosmic highways and broken bridges … [it] delves into topographies\, transit lines and simulated landscapes to engage critically with the infrastructure of movement and navigation”. Set against real and imagined geographies and landscapes\, the exhibition asks questions about the infrastructures that enable transport and trade\, the promises of speed and progress\, the meaning of home\, and what ‘navigation’ means when the destination is not a place but a memory … It is curated by Indranjan Banerjee and Lucas Morin (both exhibition curators at the Jameel) and features 30 artists. A second ‘chapter’ of the exhibition runs at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah to 26 October featuring 22 artists – a third of whom are from the Dubai roster\, with new names making up the balance.

SUMMARY:Rana Begum: Taking Form
DESCRIPTION:Rana Begum brings her textile works to The Third Line for the first time. Her fifth solo exhibition at the gallery features a new body of large-scale wool tapestries presented alongside works on linen\, paper and MDF\, all reflecting the artist’s longstanding engagement with abstraction and minimalism and continuing her exploration of light through new materials and forms. Her characteristic engagement with geometry runs throughout\, with forms suggesting patterns that extend beyond their physical boundaries. \nSuspended from the ceiling in Gallery 1\, Begum’s nearly 5m-tall tapestries should transform the space into a vast\, immersive field of cascading colour. The tapestries are feature coloured triangles\, woven together using the ridging technique that results in a dual pattern revealed only as the viewer moves around them. \nGallery 2 will have a series of large-scale linen paintings. The natural\, unprocessed tone and texture of the linen influence the colour as it is absorbed into the weave\, creating a sense of rawness and an organic quality across the surface. SUMMARY:All Manner of Experiments: Legacies of the Baghdad Modern Art Group
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Nada Shabout of NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art\, this exhibition investigates and celebrates the work and influence of one of the most important art movement of the mid-Century Middle East. Dr Shabout brings together work by the artists from the Baghdad Modern Art Group\, as well as those who the group influenced both at the time and in later generations. \nEstablished in 1951 by two of Iraq’s most influential artists\, Jewad Selim (1919–1961) and Shakir Hassan Al Said (1925–2004)\, the Baghdad Modern Art Group grew to engage many of Iraq’s leading artists\, architects\, poets\, and more; together\, they sought to develop a new art form that reflected the secularised\, modern society emerging from the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. Says the gallery: “Artists questioned the ability of traditional ‘Islamic art’ practices to present their contemporary realities\, searching for a more effective visual language.
