DESCRIPTION:Huang Yi was last seen in Abu Dhabi in The Arts Center’s inaugural season\, dancing with an industrial robot. This time he takes the ‘dance meets tech’ idea in new directions; in this collaboration with audiovisual pioneer Ryoichi Kurokawa\, the lines from a hundred artworks by renowned calligrapher Tong Yang-Tze are dismantled and reconstructed to explore the various textures that can be found between body\, sound\, visual\, and space. \nHuang digs into his cultural roots to find a wild language of movement\, turning dancers’ bodies into brushes that paint marks on stage. Kurokawa transforms the inkblots into luminous tracks\, echoing and merging with the unique brushstrokes of Tong\, constructing a continuous flow of paintings via holographic projection. On stage\, dancers trace ephemeral gestures that echo the movement of a calligrapher’s brush\, while Kurokawa’s responsive sound and visual environment amplifies each motion\, dissolving the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds. The result is a hypnotic performance that unfolds like a living painting\, at once precise\, fluid\, and emotionally charged. \nBill Bragin\, Executive Artistic Director at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi\, said: “Huang Yi’s duet with the robot KUKA dazzled audiences in our inaugural season a decade ago\, so it feels especially meaningful to welcome him back as we enter our second decade. Ink shows how his work has continued to grow\, using technology in striking and unexpected ways\, while still feeling lyrical and deeply human. We are delighted to welcome him back to Abu Dhabi and to share this extraordinary Middle East premiere of a performance mixing with the ancient art of calligraphy\, and contemporary multimedia art and robotics.” \nInk is an original production of Huang Yi Studio +\, co-commissioned by the National Taichung Theater and National Theater\, Taipei in Taiwan. His practice is shaped by poetry from the Arab world and “the complex intersections between modern spaces and personal freedoms”; he aims to present the contemporary Arab experience after the fashion of the poetry and music\nthat inspired him. \nThe title is explained by the artist’s curatorial text: “I believe that visual art is an important medium to make people see and perceive the truth … With my new body of work I am trying to reach what is beyond reality\, to go where I want the viewers to experience a visual journey\, which makes them see reality in a hopeful\, peaceful\, manner; even if reality\, sometimes\, is not as desirable as we want …”

DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the Middle East for the SF-based Libyan-Yurok artist takes its title from a poem by Joy Harjo\, which considers cycles of transformation across land\, water\, and time\, moving from submerged environments to human settlement and industrial presence. This show includes paintings\, works on paper\, sculpture\, and moving images\, tracing an ecological and cultural history of the UAE prior to large-scale urban development; Azzuz approaches land and water as lived\, relational systems rather than extractive resources\, foregrounding marine environments\, fishing practices\, and water as both sustenance and connective force across geographies. \nThrough material experimentation and research-driven enquiry\, Azzuz positions water not only as a subject but as a shared condition – one that links place\, history\, and the ongoing negotiation between human activity and the natural world. The Algae Bloom series of paintings are central to this\, with Azzuz working wet-on-wet so that paint bleeds\, drips and merges to produce organic forms that feel suspended and continuously evolving. One of the three friends has just bought a very expensive painting – it’s all white. To another friend the painting is a joke\, but do they have the right standards to judge it? The third friend doesn’t really have much of an opinion but get pulled into the disagreement. They square off over the canvas\, using it as an excuse to relentlessly batter one another over various failures … \nSpoiler alert: it’s not really about art per se – the white painting is just the catalyst\, but it does play a significant part in the denouement … \nJihane Tehini and Francesca Bizzarri direct. The original had three men as the friends\, but gender isn’t especially relevant to the script and they have cast three women – Leila Oggar\, Arezoo Sharifi and Jihane Tehini herself. \nLast November\, Complices had a sell-out run at the Junction for an excellent production of Neil Simon’s Rumors (which takes a similarly comic look at human relationships albeit from a rather different angle). On that basis alone we’d vote for this production\, but in any case Reza’s play is cleverly paced\, thoughtful\, heartfelt and ultimately generous. Recommended. \nIt’s in French with English surtitles. There are further shows on 31 January and 1 February.

DESCRIPTION:The Arts Center’s mini-Womad for artists who mix modern/Western ideas with traditional/regional styles returns with three good-looking acts (each of whom will play for about an hour\, which makes the door price a bit of a bargain). \nYasmine Hamdan (above) is Arabic-indie royalty: she’s been music since the late 1990s\, earning international acclaim as a solo singer-songwriter\, producer\, and composer; her apparently effortless merging of elements from a variety of sources from pan-Arabic pop and poetry to clubby electronica via soul and West Coast guitar is seen to good effect on the rather good album she released last September. \nAl-Qasar was started between Los Angeles and Paris in 2016 by US-French producer Thomas Attar and now has a core of Turkish psychedelic rock singer Sibel\, Iraqi-French drummer Adrien Al-Aiedy and French bassist Guillaume Theoden. It’s clever rock ‘n’ roll\, mainly guitar-led with propulsive drumming and more than a touch of North African trance (no obvious drum machines\, though). 2024’s album Uncovered\, their second\, is full of good things and loads of variety\, which bodes well for the live show … \nMaruja Limón is a six-piece band from Barcelona with a fusion of flamenco\, pop\, and Latin. Te como la cara is the band’s latest album\, released a year ago; you’ll recognise flamenco\, salsa and rumba\, but also electronica and pop. It’s fast\, super-rhythmic\, good fun and very danceable. (Incidentally the album title translates literally as ‘I eat your face’ which my Catalan friend tells me is slang for ‘I really\, really like you’.) \nTickets are reportedly selling fast … \nRead our full-length backgrounder on the Tamaas Festival here.
