SUMMARY:Michiko Tsuda and ::vtol::
DESCRIPTION:Dom Art Projects opens its new exhibition space and residency studios in Al Khayat Avenue with an inaugural exhibition that takes inspiration from the concept of time (and also plays on the meaning of ‘dom’ in Arabic: it can translate as ‘always). It features Japanese artist Michiko Tsuda and Russian artist ::vtol:: (Dmitry Morozov)\, both exhibiting in Dubai for the first time. \nTsuda is known for immersive installations exploring perception and space; occupying the main exhibition hall is an installation titled ‘You Would Come Back There to See Me Again the Following Day’ (above)\, a work which (in the words of the gallery) “explores our perception of time in relation to the evolution of new media\, their potential\, and the representation of the human being within them … It reflects the idea that our presence in time is multiplied\, refracted\, and never singular”. \nAlso showcased is ‘Takir’\, a “science art object” by ::vtol::. He works with sound\, robotics\, and emergent systems; this piece references the drying up of the Aral Sea\, looping endlessly\, accompanied by documentation\, research materials\, and reflections on the geography of Central Asia. “The disappearance of the sea is both a story of the Earth’s fate and a reminder of the consequences of imperial ambition and human exploitation — as well as an invitation to reflect on time in a geological dimension.” \nVisitors can also experience live performances\, including sound artist Peter Aidu’s interpretation of Steve Reich’s masterpiece “Piano Phase.” In Reich’s composition\, two identical musical patterns gradually shift out of sync\, creating a hypnotic field of rhythm and resonance; Aiduperforms it simultaneously on two pianos\, manually achieving the phasing effect through his own coordination. \nAlso taking place is Caryatid\, a performance by Elena Kovylina that embodies the mythic female figure from classical architecture who bears the weight of the structure upon her shoulders. The artist physically supports a heavy wooden model of a traditional reed house\, evoking the essential yet often invisible role of women as the foundation of home\, society\, and culture. \nOn the opening weekend there will be talks by the artists and a chance to see the studios\, which will be home to artists-in-residence. The schedule: \n28 November \n3pm – 4.30pm Guided tours of the exhibitions\n4.30 – 6pm Artist talk with Peter Aidu discussing how he reimagines music. Free\, but preregister here \n29 November \n3pm – 4pm Artist talk with Dmitry Morozov aka ::VTOL:: on science and robotics in contemporary art. Moderated by Alisa Bagdonaite\, Dom Art Projects Chief Curator. SUMMARY:Salma Al Marri: Résonances

SUMMARY:Jon Batiste
DESCRIPTION:The American singer\, songwriter\, musician\, composer\, bandleader\, TV personality and sometime actor is genuinely talented. He has put in the hard yards – including a seven-year stint as bandleader and musical director on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\, a current role as the Creative Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem\, and seven Grammy Awards from 22 nominations\, including an Album of the Year win. He has composed film scores\, written a symphony\, performed with just about everyone from Stevie Wonder and Prince to Ed Sheeran\, Lana Del Rey … and on top of that he’s a brilliant pianist. This is one stop on a world tour\, The Maestro Series\, with relatively intimate and certainly stripped-down performances featuring just him and the piano. As he put it: “every performance [on the tour] will be a one-of-a-kind experience – spontaneous\, immersive\, and deeply personal”. Hopefully he’ll play some of his improvisations on Beethoven … Highly recommended.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Devadeep Gupta: We Must Therefore Turn Our Attention Skywards
DESCRIPTION:A pop-up exhibition for Devadeep Gupta\, presented by Prameya Art Foundation with the support of Alserkal Avenue and India Art Fair. The artist’s practice investigates the overlapping histories of colonial extraction\, ecological destruction\, and indigenous resilience in Margherita\, Assam – once a thriving rainforest ecosystem\, now devastated by over 150 years of coal mining. This project gathers anecdotal\, speculative and documentary traces of Margherita’s transformation from a lush rainforest to an environmental\, and public-health crisis; Gupta highlights the inter-generational resilience of the inhabitants of the land as a form of reparative resistance within sites of ecological collapse\, reframing survival as both an aesthetic and an ethical act.

SUMMARY:Rigoletto
DESCRIPTION:St Petersburg Opera’s signature production of one of opera’s greatest work comes to Abu Dhabi after its Dubai performances in a version by the celebrated Russian director Yuri Alexandrov. Rigoletto remains one of Verdi’s most enduring masterpieces: a story of love\, betrayal\, and revenge told through some of the most celebrated music in the operatic repertoire; Alexandrov’s version transforms the jester from the familiar hunchback into a sharp\, cunning figure whose torment lies hidden behind his courtly disguise – a haunting portrayal of cruelty\, corruption\, and vulnerability. \nThis lavish\, costumed spectacle otherwise treats the classic with due reverence. There’s a second performance tomorrow (23 November).

SUMMARY:Sima Dance Company: NUN
DESCRIPTION:Created by choreographer Alaa Krimed and performed by his acclaimed dance company as part of the Year of Ocean\, NUN explores the relationship between human beings and the sea – “a cosmic mirror reflecting the complexity of life” as the promo puts it. Through expressive choreography\, sound\, and visual poetry\, the performance explores how the ocean embodies our deepest dualities: drifting and returning\, life and death\, loss and rebirth … “Like the sea\, the human soul is constantly reshaped by invisible currents\, breaking and renewing itself in a perpetual cycle”. \nThe title carries ancient and universal resonance. In Mesopotamian and Egyptian cosmologies\, Nun is the primordial ocean\, the infinite waters preceding creation; in certain theological and philosophical interpretations within Islam\, it also symbolises the cosmic sea linked to knowledge\, creation\, and the mysteries of existence. “Across time and cultures\, Nun evokes beginnings\, the unknown depths\, and the hidden wisdom beneath the surface of the world.”

SUMMARY:HoW November Book Club: The Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:The House of Wisdom in Sharjah is running a new season of its Book Club under the theme ‘Home’\, with three very relevant titles – House of Stone by war correspondent Anthony Shadid\, Near to the Wild Heart by Brazilian author Clarice Lispector\, and Homer’s epic for the first in the series. \nThat’s an interesting collection for the concept of ‘home’ as something shaped by memory and identity\, and often defined by absence\, return or loss. The discussion for The Odyssey should be a great opener; it’s led by Nezar Andary\, Professor of Film and Literature at Zayed University\, who will guide participants through Homer’s performative to show how the story weaves together memory\, ethics\, and community. He’s also using Emily Wilson’s highly regarded 2017 translation of Homer\, praised for being both lyrical and clear. (We don’t know who translated the Arabic version – the Book Club discussions are we think bilingual). \nSessions last all morning and include workshops as well as curated discussion.

SUMMARY:Luis Guenel Soto and Ebana Garin Coronel: Minga of a House in Ruins
DESCRIPTION:This performance\, part of the Perform Sharjah performance programme\,  centres around the Chilean tradition of ‘minga’ – the communal act of moving an entire house\, seen as a gesture of collective labour and shared resilience. Through three interwoven stories\, Minga of a House in Ruins delves into the meaning of home and whether we can build an alternative future out of the ruins of a world seemingly coming to an end. In this intimate encounter\, ruins are not simply remnants of destruction but living spaces of resistance\, where community\, imagination and care come together to affirm life in the shadow of collapse. Through movement\, sound and silence\, the work transforms decay into possibility\, showing how bodies and voices can rebuild\, even if only for a fleeting moment\, what has been lost …

DESCRIPTION:If you can’t have the original\, the greatest hits provided by their best tribute band will do nicely. Created and founded in 1988 in Melbourne\, Björn Again has clocked up 5\,000 performances in 72 countries over 31 years; it’s a gently satiric light-hearted ABBA spoof\, but boy the songs are good too …

SUMMARY:Eureka Day
DESCRIPTION:Eureka Day Elementary School is an institution that prides itself on ensuring every voice is heard\, and every child is welcome — that is\, until an outbreak of mumps forces people in the community to reconsider the school’s liberal vaccine policy. As cases rise\, the school’s Executive Committee of well-meaning parents and teachers fall apart as their progressive paradise crumbles and meetings are derailed by parental hysteria … \nThis razor-sharp comedy by American playwright Jonathan Spector has had successful recent runs on Broadway and in the West End.  It’s laugh-out-loud funny\, but there’s a message inside: even the most enlightened communities are just one epidemic away from complete turmoil. \nNot a bad choice for The Junction’s tenth anniversary. SUMMARY:Xala: dir Ousmane Sembène (1975)
DESCRIPTION:This Senegalese satirical comedy\, written and directed by Ousmane Sembène as an adaptation of his own novel\, finds a corrupt government official cursed with crippling erectile dysfunction upon the day of his marriage. He comes to realise it’s connecting with his embezzling\, and it can be cured only by having the lowly of society spit on him … Adeptly combining elements of African folklore and popular cinema\, Sembène has produced a hilarious\, caustic satire of political corruption under an inept patriarchy. \nScreens as part of a monthly film programme in Efie’s Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab Liberation Cinema: “through a carefully curated selection of films\, the series interrogates how revolutionary aesthetics\, political struggle\, and the diasporic imagination have shaped\, and continue to shape\, the language of cinema across continents”. It’s organised with Bootleg Griot\, an independent public library project currently ensconced in the Rekord Gallery that is aimed at improving access to literature and print media – especially from writers and collectives of African descent.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Amina Illuminati
DESCRIPTION:Says the gallery: “In an era of visual noise and the relentless pace of modern life\, Amina Illuminati offers a moment of stillness — a space where matter becomes light\, and form becomes revelation”. It’s a group show for work by Alessandro Montalbano (Italy)\, Valeriya Isyak (Russia)\, Hadil Moufti (Saudi Arabia)\, Elnaz Javani (Iran/USA) and Alyazya Almansoori (UAE). The artists come from different cultures but the exhibition title reflects a shared artistic pursuit: “transforming matter into light\, emotion into form\, and tradition into present experience”.
