SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE The History of Letters and Diacritical Marks
DESCRIPTION:This short Sharjah Public Libraries exhibition – part of SPL’s centennial celebrations – features rare manuscripts and artefacts from the Sharjah Quran Complex collection\, shedding light on the vital role the Arabic script has played in preserving cultural identity and knowledge across generations. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Eltiqa: How to Work Together?
DESCRIPTION:More 80 artworks by the Palestinian artist collective Eltiqa\, \nEltiqa (Arabic for “encounter”) is an artist collective from Gaza City founded in 2000. Eltiqa members have developed artistic practices together – including the setting up of a dedicated exhibition and workshop space in Gaza City\, and supporting younger generations of artists through workshops\, exhibitions and by offering a space to meet and dialogue. \nEltiqa: How to Work Together? includes a selection of Eltiqa’s artworks spanning several years of collaboration. The works on display were collected from various locations worldwide; some artworks produced and exhibited years ago remained with institutions and individuals because of the difficulty of returning them to Gaza\, other works were transported out of Gaza during the ongoing genocide. \nIncluded in the exhibition is an annotated timeline that traces the history of Eltiqa – the collective’s formation and early days\, their efforts at creating structures of support for themselves and others\, and the historical\, political and personal events that have marked their lives as a collective and as individuals. Through anecdotes recounted by members of Eltiqa and research conducted by The Question of Funding collective\, the displayed narratives accentuate Eltiqa’s practice and survival amid political\, social\, economic and personal distress.

SUMMARY:Summer Cinema: Rematerialising the Archive
DESCRIPTION:Jameel’s Summer Cinema\, organised in collaboration with The Culturist Film Club and curated by Hind Mezaina\, is a season of free-to-attend films about cities\, archives\, and the ways we live and remember together. Audiences are encouraged to engage in “collective viewing” – each screening includes informal talks with filmmakers\, artists\, and special guests – and food and refreshments will be available. \nThis programme brings together two experimental films that reflect on colonial and corporate archives\, showing how they can reveal and distort\, illuminate and erase. \nThe Flowers Stand Silently\, Witnessing: dir Theo Panagopoulos (2024\, 17 min –still above) \nA filmmaker of Palestinian descent based in Scotland unearths a rarely-seen film archive of silent colour films of Palestinian wildflowers made in the 1930s and 1940s by Scottish missionaries in British-occupied Palestine and decides to reclaim the footage. This tender film essay questions the role of image-making as a tool of both testimony and violence when connected to entanglements between people and the land. \nScenes of Extraction: dir Sanaz Sohrabi (2023\, 43 min) \n This essay film takes the viewer on an archival stroll into the British Petroleum Archives to unearth the still and moving images that documented this expansive colonial network of geological explorations across Iran between 1901 and 1951\, It weaves through decades of archival documents to parse out the visual history of the ‘reflection deismograph’ method of oil exploration\, and traces the technical and social entanglement between the infrastructures of oil and the camera during the operations of British Petroleum across the Iranian oil belt. \nFollowing the screening Hind Mezaina will be in conversation with archivist and researcher Jasmine Soliman. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Shades of Yellow: dir Sergio Pontier (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Sergio Pontier reshapes the portrayal of black childhood\, reflecting on the innocence of his youth and how it defined him; voyaging into mundane moments from his childhood\, made nostalgic and meaningful on reflection\, the Afro-Dominican-Spanish photographer and filmmaker has created a visual poem that touches on identity\, blackness\, community\, brotherhood and friendship and seeks to return to a time when the desire to grow up overruled all. Pontier rejects the common portrayal of black childhood as dark and dangerous\, questioning the often violent depictions he found himself unable to relate to. \nShades of Yellow shows in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. SUMMARY:Al Mahatta: dir Eltayeb Mahdi (1989)
DESCRIPTION:Sudan\, late 1980s. People cross the desert on foot or cover long distances by car and truck. In Al Mahatta\, Eltayeb Mahdi shows encounters at one of the large crossroads between Khartoum in the centre of the country and Bur Sudan on the Red Sea. \nEltayeb Mahdi studied in Cairo and became part of the Sudanese Film Group\, which was founded with the intention of telling stories about their country and confronting young people with the realities of their homeland. Identity formation – not through the detour of referencing Europe or America\, but with a view to the situation in their own country. Al Mahatta shows in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:No Trespassing
DESCRIPTION:Ishara’s first summer exhibition\, curated by Priyanka Mehra\, features six UAE-based and South Asian artists exploring their relationship with the street – “a collection of individual experiences that alternate between chaotic and orderly\, gritty and beautiful\, uninhibited and curated … ‘No Trespassing’ looks at the streets as a site of deconstruction and reinvention\, continually shaping and being shaped by those who pass through them”. So signposts\, building materials\, pavements\, lights\, street art\, scrapheaps and human traces all become inscriptions of a city’s movement. \nH11235 (Kiran Maharjan) was unable to be present on-site to create the piece\, so his large-scale mixed-media work explores the possibilities of mark-making from a distance. An abstraction of a digital rendering presented opposite\, the work” distils the intertwined bodily and architectural elements shown in the original” while incorporating locally sourced building materials” and “explores the impact of our material surroundings on the psyche”. \nRami Farook has carved out four square metres of the gallery’s back wall to reveal its hidden infrastructure and reflect on the ownership of space – and art. \nIn the second gallery\, magpie favourite Fatspatrol (Fathima Mohiuddin) presents ‘The World Out There’\, comprising “scavenged” objects – discarded street signs\, scraps of wood and posters – marked with gestural drawings that extend beyond the mounted pieces and onto the surrounding wall. Adopting the persona of the flâneur – a solitary figure who wanders through a city\, observing and contemplating the urban landscape – the artist collects such objects to rewrite their narratives using her own voice and language. \nSara Alahbabi’s ‘For a Better Modern Something’\, an installation that explores Abu Dhabi’s evolving urban fabric\, uses cement blocks printed with maps and joined together with LED tube lights to create a scaffolding-like structure \nKhaled Esguerra’s installation in the third gallery\, challenges ongoing efforts to conceal the disorderliness of urban centres. Titled ‘Heritage Legacy Authentic’\, the work responds to the redevelopment of historic neighbourhoods\, carried out with the promise of preserving heritage and authenticity. The work invites viewers to trash the sheets of copier paper laid on the floor and featuring words drawn from the promotional messaging of such projects. \nTo 30 August. \nAbove: Fatspatrol\, The World Out There (2025: details).
