SUMMARY:The History of Letters and Diacritical Marks
DESCRIPTION:This short Sharjah Public Libraries exhibition – part of SPL’s centennial celebrations – features rare manuscripts and artefacts from the Sharjah Quran Complex collection\, shedding light on the vital role the Arabic script has played in preserving cultural identity and knowledge across generations. The exhibition traces 14 centuries of development in Arabic script\, from its earliest forms to the refinement of diacritical marks and the flourishing of Arabic calligraphy\, to offer “a compelling look into how the script evolved into an art form and a vessel of knowledge”.  To 20 July.

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Al Mahatta: dir Eltayeb Mahdi (1989)
DESCRIPTION:Sudan\, late 1980s. People cross the desert on foot or cover long distances by car and truck. In Al Mahatta\, Eltayeb Mahdi shows encounters at one of the large crossroads between Khartoum in the centre of the country and Bur Sudan on the Red Sea. \nEltayeb Mahdi studied in Cairo and became part of the Sudanese Film Group\, which was founded with the intention of telling stories about their country and confronting young people with the realities of their homeland. Identity formation – not through the detour of referencing Europe or America\, but with a view to the situation in their own country. Al Mahatta shows in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:No Trespassing
DESCRIPTION:Ishara’s first summer exhibition\, curated by Priyanka Mehra\, features six UAE-based and South Asian artists exploring their relationship with the street – “a collection of individual experiences that alternate between chaotic and orderly\, gritty and beautiful\, uninhibited and curated … ‘No Trespassing’ looks at the streets as a site of deconstruction and reinvention\, continually shaping and being shaped by those who pass through them”. So signposts\, building materials\, pavements\, lights\, street art\, scrapheaps and human traces all become inscriptions of a city’s movement. \nH11235 (Kiran Maharjan) was unable to be present on-site to create the piece\, so his large-scale mixed-media work explores the possibilities of mark-making from a distance. An abstraction of a digital rendering presented opposite\, the work” distils the intertwined bodily and architectural elements shown in the original” while incorporating locally sourced building materials” and “explores the impact of our material surroundings on the psyche”. \nRami Farook has carved out four square metres of the gallery’s back wall to reveal its hidden infrastructure and reflect on the ownership of space – and art. \nIn the second gallery\, magpie favourite Fatspatrol (Fathima Mohiuddin) presents ‘The World Out There’\, comprising “scavenged” objects – discarded street signs\, scraps of wood and posters – marked with gestural drawings that extend beyond the mounted pieces and onto the surrounding wall. Adopting the persona of the flâneur – a solitary figure who wanders through a city\, observing and contemplating the urban landscape – the artist collects such objects to rewrite their narratives using her own voice and language. \nSara Alahbabi’s ‘For a Better Modern Something’\, an installation that explores Abu Dhabi’s evolving urban fabric\, uses cement blocks printed with maps and joined together with LED tube lights to create a scaffolding-like structure \nKhaled Esguerra’s installation in the third gallery\, challenges ongoing efforts to conceal the disorderliness of urban centres. Titled ‘Heritage Legacy Authentic’\, the work responds to the redevelopment of historic neighbourhoods\, carried out with the promise of preserving heritage and authenticity. The work invites viewers to trash the sheets of copier paper laid on the floor and featuring words drawn from the promotional messaging of such projects. \nTo 30 August. \nAbove: Fatspatrol\, The World Out There (2025: details). SUMMARY:Tajammul
DESCRIPTION:The XVA group show for the summer\, curated by Carina Vicente\, promises “beauty and grace\, capturing the aesthetics of the evolving art landscape in the contemporary Middle East” – the title comes from the Arabic root word for beauty (jamaal)\, “signifying efforts to make oneself beautiful in appearance or courteous in deed … In this way\, Tajammul implies a form of grace that comes from infusing places\, spaces\, and situations with a sense of elegant beauty and social ease. It reflects the way that the United Arab Emirates is not only a place of fine art\, high culture\, sweeping architecture\, and dynamic change\, but a place of close connections\, loyal friendships\, and warm hospitality. Certainly it’s an impressive (and impressively diverse) roster of participants. \nThe artists: \n\n\n\nBasil Alkazzi\nHussein Al-Mohasen\nCharlotte de Bekker\nCC (Alireza Asbahi)\nImran Channa\nElizabeth Dorazio\nOussama Garti\nMahmoud Hamadani\nDavid Howarth\nRichard Ketley\nBehdad Lahooti\nColleen Quigley\nTor Seidel\nMoussa Tiba\nMorteza Zahedi\n\n\n\nTo 11 September.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE MyLysses
DESCRIPTION:How do contemporary artists grapple with the shifting role of text\, literature and knowledge in an age of AI? This group exhibition curated by Tor Seidel tries to answer that question. As Seidel puts it\, “Has access to texts and images become so easy that we must ask ourselves what we still read\, write\, and know? What influence do these texts written by AI agents have on visual productions\, and how enduringly do they shape what was once conceived of as collective memory? … In this exhibition\, we have invited artists whose works engage with classical literature\, examine scientific imagery within the context of its interpretation\, engage in\nconversations with AI identities\, or consider machine sounds as creators of independent poetics”. \nThe artists: \nAbdulghani Alanahawi\nBrian Gonzales\nBao Li\nMarcel Buehler\nDaniela Friebel\nMutasim Al Kubaisi\nJens Lystraeten\nChristiana De Marchi\nUnaiza Ismail\nIsaac Sullivan\nTor Seidel\nCharlie Koolhaas\nShahad Mohamed AlBlooshi

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled explicitly ‘Contemporary Art from Korea\, 1960s to Today’\, this exhibition is a selection of works from the Seoul Museum of Art\, curated by SeMA’s Kyung-Hwan Yeo and Maya El Khalil for the Abu Dhabi Festival\, and it aims to cover the “legacy of material and conceptual combination\, exchange\, hybridity\, and innovation” in the radical Korean contemporary art scene. \nThe title echoes Nam June Paik’s vision of ‘open circuits’\, where connection and meaning flow beyond boundaries; so the exhibition immerses the viewer in “the fluid intersections of consciousness\, technology\, and art”\, specifically showing “how artists work with varied technologies to intervene in\, interpret and mediate different scales of experience\, from the individual\, the archival and the collective\, to the abstract and yet to become …” \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Bashir Makhoul: The Promise
DESCRIPTION:New works by the noted Palestinian artist. The title The Promise suggests a poetic and ambiguous statement of intent; a promise is made but can also be broken. Makhoul’s practice engages deeply with the concept of home\, with the recurring motif of the house – typically depicted as geometric structures arranged in dense\, chaotic formations\, mirroring the overcrowded conditions of refugee camps and marginalized communities.

SUMMARY:Ramona: dir Andrea Bagney (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Bagney’s debut feature\, largely shot in black and white in a stylistic nod to the French New Wave of the 1960s\, is a romantic comedy with a difference. After living abroad for several years\, Ramona and her boyfriend Nico return to Madrid where she hopes to restart her acting career. On the evening before her first audition\, she encounters a charismatic older man named Bruno. SUMMARY:Library Circles: Samar Halloum
DESCRIPTION:A workshop led by Palestinian architect and educator Samar Halloum as part of the public programmes for Jameel Library Circles. Halloum will present research developed through her fieldwork and interviews in Dheisheh Refugee Camp in Palestine\, some of which is currently on display in the Library (to 30 June); it examines how displaced communities influence the built environment over time through oral history\, communal practices and spatial adaptations to trace the continuity of the Musha’ system from Palestinian highland villages into refugee camps. \nThe workshop invites participants to engage in the active process of observing\, analysing\, inquiring and interpreting the documentation from this research; through writing exercises and open discussion\, the session encourages reflection on non-singular authorship and personal and collective meaning created in the reading of spaces\, images and research. \nSamar Halloum is an Assistant Professor at the American University of Sharjah. She previously served as the Design and Research Lead for the National Pavilion UAE at the 18th Venice Biennale Architettura.

SUMMARY:We call it Ballet: Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:This is a version of the ballet that features just six dancers (rather than the 30 or more in a full conventional production) “to bring this classic tale to life on stage”.  The show is created\, directed\, and choreographed by María Farelo and Cristian Pérez of Luma Artistas\, whose style is to focus on storytelling through movement\, emphasizing character development and emotional depth. The choreography incorporates a mix of classical ballet techniques and modern dance\, and the production also features striking visual elements including glow-in-the-dark costumes and high-tech lighting designs; the intention is to honour the original tale while providing a perspective that resonates with contemporary audiences. \nThere are shows at 6.30 and 9pm.
