He’s accompanied by Fethi Nadjem (violin\, mandole)\, Dan Minchom (bass)\, Matt Sellick (guitar)\, and either Matais Recharte or Marito Marques (drums\, cajón\, percussion) – and there’s a special guest star\, top oud soloist Sherine Tohamy. \nKnown for his intoxicating fusion of world music\, Cook has travelled the globe looking for sounds that resonate with him; the result is an innovative mix of flamenco\, jazz\, classical\, and world music from India to Spain\, and on to Cuba and Latin America. “I want to take people to places they haven’t been\,” he said recently: “A place where modern sounds can mix with ancient timbres”. He’s doing two dates here – this one\, and the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi tomorrow (14 June). Highly recommended.

DESCRIPTION:Curated by Murtaza Vali\, this exhibition revisits Hassan Sharif’s ‘objects’\, works which expand the definition of ‘craft’ beyond notions of skill\, precision and medium-specific mastery and towards “an experimental\, experiential and embodied practice of learning\, understanding\, and knowing through making”. \nThis exhibition emphasizes materiality\, manufacture\, and form through careful groupings and juxtapositions\, pairing exhibited ‘objects’ with texts that present an account of their crafting and perception. Sharif famously characterised himself as a “single work artist\,” unifying his diverse oeuvre under one conceptual premise. The Storyteller” will attempt to trace some of the myriad material and formal complexities that are otherwise masked by this provocation\, presenting a fragmented biography and (art) history of Sharif through thee works.

SUMMARY:Béchir Boussandel: Tenté par d'autres soleils (Tempted by Other Suns)
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai iteration of this show\, which is presented in collaboration with Kamel Lazaar Foundation and has previously been shown at B7L9 Art Centre in Tunis\, introduces a new body of work in blown glass – a departure from Béchir’s predominantly canvas-based practice. These works centre on the figure of the gleaner\, individuals who collect waste to survive. \nBorn in France but deeply rooted in Bizerte\, Tunisia\, Béchir works across painting\, blown glass\, metal\, and organic materials to tell stories of migration\, urban transformation\, and survival. Through a layered and symbolic approach\, he constructs a material language that feels delicate and durable. The exhibition’s title borrows from French philosopher Claire Marin: “Like migratory birds\, we are always tempted by other suns.” One can’t help but think of the gleaners (known locally as barbechas)\, those who have come from far away\, gleaning from the ground\, some still dreaming of crossing into Europe … \nTo 5 September.

SUMMARY:Architectures of the In-Between
DESCRIPTION:A group show featuring Nevine Hamza\, Atefeh Majidi Nezhad\, and Layla Juma. Says the gallery: “Each artist navigates the threshold between structure and sentiment\, material and memory\, between what is seen and what is sensed …” \nHamza’s work draws on her background in design to transform metaphysical ideas into “atmospheric visual compositions that float between sky and ground … using architectural elements to explore the boundaries between earth and sky\, the tangible and the intangible” (see above). Nezhad’s installations offer a more tactile investigation of space; her Zero-Gseries employs delicate lace and translucent materials that appear suspended in midair\, confronting the viewer with a sense of both weightlessness and intimacy.  And Juma’s minimalist geometries use a language of form and repetition that translates social structures into visual rhythm – through drawing\, installation\, and sculpture\, Juma assembles and dissembles patterns to reveal coded systems and moments of alignment. \nTo 23 August.
