SUMMARY:The Welkin
DESCRIPTION:A second performance (of three) for Lucy Kirkwood’s feminist twist on Twelve Angry Men\, with the courtroom made up of bickering\, bantering women who must decide the outcome of a heinous crime in rural Suffolk in 1759. Sally Poppy is sentenced to hang for murder but claims to be pregnant\, which would mean she escapes execution; a jury of 12 matrons are gathered to decide whether she’s telling the truth. \nIt’s a really interesting play\, not least because so many of the characters are flawed – Sally herself is not an attractive person – and no matter how good the bitching and binding among the women\, ultimately they’re supporting the patriarchal\, misogynistic legal system that condemns a woman on a man’s word (which in this case is Sally’s cuckolded husband). And there are some great parts for women\, especially the midwife who takes the lead as Sally’s principal defender. \nThere is a final performance on 23 June.

SUMMARY:Matilda The Musical
DESCRIPTION:As the New York Post put it\, “Once in a blue moon\, a show comes out blazing and restores your faith in broadway. Matilda the Musical is that show”. The multi-award-winning musical (it has won more than 99 international awards) inspired by the Roald Dahl book had a successful run in Dubai last September; now it’s coming to Abu Dhabi – “the perfect destination to host the beloved musical”\, according to the CEP of the company responsible for putting it on for four days at Etihad Arena on Yas Island (20-23 June). \nMatilda The Musical is directed by Matthew Warchus. Sets and costumes are by Rob Howell\, with choreography by Peter Darling. All three are also Tony winners\, along with the lighting director Hugh Vanstone. The script by Tony Award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly is excellent\, sticking close enough to the original but making the most of the live-action theatricality of the stage; Tim Minchin’s original songs are terrific\, mixing wit with sing-along choruses. And it’s a Royal Shakespeare Company production\, which is itself an assurance of quality and professionalism. \nTickets starts at a reasonable enough AED 150 for weekday shows\, AED 200 at weekends. Matilda the Musical plays at 7pm on 20 and 21 June\, at 1pm and 6pm on 22 and 23 June. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Suanjaya Kencut: Re-Charge
DESCRIPTION:Kencut’s first solo show in the Middle East explores personal challenge and transformation\, described by the gallery as “a pivotal moment in Kencut’s artistic journey— a deliberate pivot from external inspirations to an introspective examination of the struggles that define the human condition”. In his works\, Kencut visualises the often suffocating pressure of personal and societal expectations that can lead to burnout; the viewer is invited to navigate the tumultuous journey from overwhelming distress to the serene shores of recovery and self-acceptance.

SUMMARY:Karama Arts Club: Summer Social / How to thrive as a DJ
DESCRIPTION:The intelligent networking session for creative peers is back after a lengthy hiatus (“we have been busy with the ongoing application to become an official non-profit social club … We are thrilled to finally be making progress\, and we hope to get the good news over the summer. Once approved\, we will be the first of its kind in Dubai”). \nKAC has booked two rooms in Casa Latina\, one for the bar (“a chance to mix\, mingle and catch up with Dubai’s creative crème de la crème to a backdrop of quality tunes from our member DJs”) and one for the panel session. The topic this time is making it as a DJ; we’re promised that seasoned pros will share their secrets on how to get started and then how to thrive as a full-timer on the wheels of steel / Ableton. \nThe (semi) formal bit of the evening includes the introduction of new board members and advance info on next season. The panel session starts around 7.30\, with the private bar and ‘members social’ from 6.30 (the DJ panel will be in the next room\, so you can choose to do either or both). At 10pm\, the Bassmati party takes over with free entry for Karama Arts Club guests. \nAccess to the Club’s evenings is free\, but you have to be a member … and membership is free\, too\, but you have to be nominated by an existing club member since this “ensures the sound\, organic growth of a trusted community”.

\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Janine Harouni: Man'oushe
DESCRIPTION:The UK-based Lebanese-American comedian won plenty of ‘best newcomer’ awards when she started gigging five years ago\, and Man’oushe – her second full-length solo show\, first seen at Edinburgh in 2023 and now touring – has been winning lots more plaudits. “The smoothest of standups offers polished punchlines in a warm and perfectly wrought hour” summarised the Guardian review\, which also called her “the smoothest\, most controlled of comics”and commended “a warm and entertaining offering” about marriage\, parenthood\, and bing a family. Highly recommended.

SUMMARY:One Word: dir Viviana Uriona (2020)
DESCRIPTION:A documentary about the impacts of climate change on the Republic of the Marshall Islands and its people.  The Marshall Islands comprises more than a thousand individual islands and islets\, most of them less than 5.9 feet above sea level. The greenhouse gas emissions of the industrialised world and the consequent rise in sea levels will likely destroy the culture of the Marshall Islands as well as its territory – and forecasts predict the destruction of the islands as early as 2050. \nIt was particularly important for filmmakers Viviana and Mark Uriona to get to know the people\, developing the together with them and therefore enabling a kind of empowerment. This approach to mutual exploration has resulted in an exciting\, vivid and highly charged documentary on what is surely the most important topic of our time. \nThis film is presented as a part of the NAAS film programme\, a collaboration between several cultural institutions in the UAE: Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France\, Canada\, Austria and Switzerland\, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi. The first edition of NAAS is titled Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, and it focuses on the themes of environment and sustainability.

SUMMARY:backbone
DESCRIPTION:studio salasil has curated this group show of six artists “who engage in risk and interruption within their practices”\, structuring the exhibition around the effective concept of the backbone – “a central\, internal structure of strength that binds and connects things together\, embodying our internal worlds and expanded senses of function and feeling. The metaphorical meaning is similar to the figurative translation of the word\, سند in Arabic\, which refers to someone who has your back. Through the interrogation of the word\, backbone explores the complexities and fragilities of these structures which at times can be exposed\, excavated or elusive …” \nThe artists: \nNour Malas\nMalik Thomas Jalil Kydd\nKaïs Dhifi\nAlia Hamaoui\nJana Ghalayini\nAudrey Large & Théophil Blande \nThis should be an interesting show\, if studio salasil’s ambitions and past work are any guide. Describing itself as “a future-focusing curatorial studio tending to care\, research and experimentation”\, salasil also did the rather good Crystal Clear show at Bayt Al Mamzar last year. \nTo 7 September. \nAbove: Alia Hamaoui\, Panoptic Gardens (2023). SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Reverberations: Textile as Echo
DESCRIPTION:The second of three exhibitions showcasing contemporary approaches to textile and fibre art curated for Green Art Gallery by Murtaza Vali. It brings together work by four contemporary artists – M’barek Bouhchichi\, Sayan Chanda\, Himali Singh Soin\, and Swapnaa Tamhane – that references the rich and diverse history and practice of textile arts across South and West Asia and North Africa. \nOften made in collaboration with master artisans\, the included artworks use a variety of traditional dyeing and weaving techniques and materials: wool cloth made in southeastern Morocco and then stained with henna; a handwoven tapestry and a patchwork abstraction that incorporate deconstructed vintage quilts and scarves from Bengal; Ikat fabric dyed and woven in Andhra Pradesh; and industrially made cotton embellished by hand with wood block printing and mirror embroidery in the desert region of Kutch\, Gujarat. “Countering colonial and modernist discourses that devalued such Indigenous textile traditions as mere craft\, these works reclaim their vitality as a mode of contemporary expression. Complicating modernist notions of autonomy and authorship through collaboration\, they blur commonly held distinctions between object and process\, form and ornament\, past and future\, and the handmade and the digital. And much like the traditional techniques and processes they invoke\, these artworks remind us that textile is always a multisensory medium\, resonating across visual\, sonic\, and bodily registers …”
