DESCRIPTION:“Sometimes we laugh so hard we cry. And sometimes we cry so hard we laugh …” Amer Zahr’s show is described as “a comedic journey through being Palestinian and Arab in today’s times”. The Palestinian-American comedian (and author\, political activist and  adjunct professor at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law) brings more than 10 years of comedy experience to Dubai. He’s performed often with other Palestinian-American comedians like Said Durrah\, Mona Aburmishan\, and Mike Easmeil (and sometimes produced the shows); he runs a comedy festival in his native Dearborn\, Michigan; he has produced and headlined in three of his own comedy tours; and in 2016 and 2020 he served as a surrogate for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. He’s well worth the price of admission to this Dubai Comedy Festival gig.

DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the connected themes of romance and war in two of David Lean’s classics. Both films were about “transports of love and the transportation of warring parties”\, both comment on the post-Second World War context. What did it mean to make a British film for a newly emerging British film industry? How did this industry differ from that in America? How did the films play to an emerging sense of tourism and travel through British colonies? \nMost particularly\, Lydia Goehr\,  Professor of Humanities at Columbia University\, wants to explore the role of the new post-war technology that brought music into film as an indispensable part. How did the radio\, for example\, play to the transmission of music and news\, or to a broadcast of information that brought the formal movement of film into a parallelism of tracks with the high speed and lines of a train\, a plane\, and an automobile? \nThe talk\, in NYUAD’s ‘Distinguished Lecture in Music Studies’ series\, is moderated by Gwyneth Bravo\, Assistant Professor of Music at NYUAD.

In the first chapter of this project\, Faisal describes the technique as an expression of emotions; for the current show he defines the outcome as a shock; the exhibition will reveal the process of Coping with the Shock. \n“The dialogue between the abstract and figurative\, conceptually or formalistically\, is essential to Faisal’s work. Time\, being one of the most abstract ideas becomes figurative when Faisal visually notes down specific points in time through the use of charcoal and paint. DESCRIPTION:The Syrian artist’s first solo exhibition with this gallery (and his first show in eight years) is a series of new works on paper created in 2023. Considered one of the pioneers of modernism and expressionism in Syria\, Moualla was the first of his peers to introduce interactive performance to his work; though he no longer incorporates performance\, the act and process of creating his works is a performance in itself – he’s known for his dramatic\, intensely theatrical large-scale canvasses. \n“Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction\, consciousness and subconsciousness\, Moualla reflects on the ambiguities that are constantly in our minds and part of our daily lives” says the gallery. ” Calling for a reconsideration of socially rooted axioms\, specifically in Arab society and through the process of a war\, the artist intentionally poses questions ideas of power\, free-will\, and choices.” \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Based on a story by Artur Schnitzler\, Liebelei is a touching love story and one of cinema’s most memorable romances:in pre WWI Vienna\, two army officers meet a pair of pretty girls (one of them played by Magda Schneider\, mother of Romy). A love affair develops between cavalry Lieutenant Fritz and Christine\, the daughter of an opera violinist. … but there’s a tragic ending. The film is a cut above the costume-based tearjerkers common to the era\, though; Ophuls demonstrated a lightness of touch in his filming\, and the plot is surprisingly nuanced (for instance\, Christine’s father is prepared to allow her an exceptional degree of freedom for her age because he feels remorse about being overly protective of her older sister and forcing her into spinsterhood). \nLiebelei screens in a double bill with (1948)\, Ophuls’ Hollywood vehicle for Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan. It’s also a bittersweet story\, albeit without the same catastrophic ending … \nThe films show in Goethe-Institut’s CineKlub programme; all films are introduced by film scholar Peter Scarlet\, who curated the series. It kicks movies made by German émigré filmmakers who had successful careers in Hollywood\, and each movie night is a double feature. There will be a Q&A and discussion with food and drink after the screenings.
