SUMMARY:Joanne McNally
DESCRIPTION:McNally was a big hit with Vogue Williams in their Dubai Comedy Festival show My Therapist Ghosted Me; but she’s genuinely funny on her own\, too – described by The Sunday Times as “a truly gifted stand-up”\, and now capable of selling out venues in Britain and her native Ireland (not to mention three nights at the QE2 in January). Already one of the biggest names in her profession after a whirlwind few years\, she’s achingly funny on the ups and downs of her own life: her first one-woman show\, Bite Me\, was about eating disorders\, her podcast is genuinely about her relationship with her therapist\, and her sellout Edinburgh shows Wine Tamer and The Prosecco Express were brilliant. Highly recommended\, even at this price\, especially if you like an Irish accent …

SUMMARY:Robert Santoré: Timeless
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that traces the Californian artist’s evolution as a painter and printmaker\, from early years of study in New York to his pursuit of new techniques and expressive styles with works that emphasise a bold colour palette and the interplay between abstract figures and iconic symbols. Says the gallery: “Santoré’s ability to create a visual language that transcends cultural and temporal boundaries speaks directly to the universal human experience\, fostering a connection that defies time and place”. To 1 October.

SUMMARY:Brídín Clements Cotton and Michael Shiloh: Your Message Could Not Be Delivered
DESCRIPTION:Works by artist\, engineer\, and NYUAD Associate Professor of Practice of Interactive Media Michael Shiloh; and artist\, performing arts manager\, and NYUAD Arts Instructor of Stage and Project Management Brídín Clements Cotton. \nWhat systems do we rely on daily? How does this reliance shape our relationships with each other? With the system? Does the mode of communication influence our tone? Does it impact what we share? The exhibition promises “an opportunity for UAE audiences to engage with the hidden world of the systems we rely on daily to communicate with one another …” Essentially it’s a participatory installation\, with visitors invited to come prepared to work with tools and get their hands dirty\, and also to bring along their own written correspondences– postcards\, letters\, and emails\, as they become a part of the ever-evolving exhibit. \nThis exhibition includes a collection of original archival documents from the NYUAD Library’s Archives and Special Collections Department. \nTo 5 September.

DESCRIPTION:A second pair of shows for this “immersive showcase that delves into the profound relationship between human creativity and cutting-edge artificial intelligence”. At base the MORROW collective has created 360° Digital Art Show with live dancers; it uses ToDA’s stereo sound and vision experience to showcase the possibilities and profound impact of advanced technology and “blur the lines between the virtual and the tangible”. \nThere’s also Metaverse VR Experience “where digital and physical worlds seamlessly merge”\, a curators’ tour with Q&A\, a workshop by MORROW collective on Curating Digital Art\, and a series of NFT drops. Artists featured include Audrey Miller\, Gary Cartlidge\, Glass Crane\, Hipworth\, Jake-Andrew\, Lamia Eda Kula\, Martha Fiennes\, Stanislav Bartnikas\, Tomás Mujica Pérez\, and Zam. \nThere are shows at 10am and 2pm.

SUMMARY:Deep Blue: Man + Machine
DESCRIPTION:“An immersive showcase that delves into the profound relationship between human creativity and cutting-edge artificial intelligence\,” says the press blurb. “This extraordinary event is set to captivate audiences with a fusion of art\, technology\, and innovation.” \nEffectively it’s a three-hour mini-festival cum showcase of technology as art that also provides a networking opportunity for practitioners\, would-be investors and the techno-curious. \nThe title\, incidentally\, riffs on IBM’s chess-playing supercomputer from the 19080s\, the first to defeat a human. It was the first computer to win a game against a human. As Morrow puts it\, “this exhibition comprises artwork that symbolises the vastness of intelligence between machine and man and what that means for our future … Artworks also explore the emotion of the colour blue\, which commands power and authority and can embody calmness\, stability and strength” \nThere are shows at 10am and 2pm\, repeated on 27 August.

SUMMARY:Sudarshan Shetty: Only Life\, Myriad Places
DESCRIPTION:This major solo exhibition for Sudarshan Shetty celebrates the global premiere of the artist’s latest film One Life Many with the first-ever survey of Shetty’s moving image works\, including rarely seen videos\, multimedia installations and sculptures. A key motif is a ‘poetics of listening’ – videos\, images\, objects and texts assume a fleeting presence in Shetty’s repertoire\, “as if they were musical notes that are at once real yet ungraspable\, repetitive yet novel”. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by physical and virtual tours\, educational and public programmes\, and artist conversations over the duration of the show. \nTo 9 December. \nAbove: Still from One Life Many (2022)

SUMMARY:Bellissima | Beautiful: dir Luchino Visconti (1951)
DESCRIPTION:A newly restored print of this black-and-white classic. It’s a pointed satire on the film industry; Maddalena (Anna Magnani) is a screenstruck mother convinced of the star potential of her daughter Maria (Tina Apicella) and desperate to escape of everyday existence in working-class Rome. But overhearing the film crew’s candid assessment of her daughter’s audition\, Maddalena is forced to reconsider her views on the film industry and its world of illusions … Highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Candlelight Concert: Vivaldi's Four Seasons
DESCRIPTION:One of the most successful productions in the Candlelight Concerts series of “classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live music candlelit performances”.  The Vivaldi favourite was written as concerti for violin and orchestra\, but it’s often arranged for string quartet and this is what we’ll be getting here – the players are Gulf Strings\, the performance is “illuminated by thousands of candles”.  The programme includes the four movements of the Seasons\, plus Vivaldi’s flamboyant La Follia. Should be a good evening …

SUMMARY:Aftersun: dir Charlotte Wells (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte Wells’ stunning feature debut movingly portrays a father-daughter relationship. Calum (Paul Mescal) and Sophie (Frankie Corio) are on a week’s holiday in Turkey; it’s a chance for the two to re-bond\, and they do. Twenty years later\, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship\, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t … Very highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Candlelight: Beethoven's Best Works
DESCRIPTION:The title of this concert certainly sets the bar high\, though it seems a pretty good selection of the composer’s works for piano. The pianist is Magdalena Wajdzik\, and the other plus is the way these recitals are lit by candlelight. The programme: \n♦ “Für Elise” (Bagatelle no.25 in A minor)\n♦ Piano Sonata No.21 op.31 (Waldsten)\n♦ Piano Sonata op.13 ‘Pathetique’\n♦ Piano Sonata op. 27 No.2 (Moonlight)\n♦ Symphony No.5 (transcription for solo piano by Liszt) 1st Movement

SUMMARY:Star Wars: A New Hope dir George Lucas (1977)
DESCRIPTION:The first\, and arguably the best – if only because of the impact of the opening titles. Universally acknowledged as a landmark in action films and featuring Mark Hamill\, Harrison Ford\, and Carrie Fisher in their prime (plus Alec Guinness to lend gravitas and Peter Mayhew in the Chewbacca suit). Unmissable.

SUMMARY:Sohni Mahiwal
DESCRIPTION:The second and final performance of this epic love story\, timed for the Independence Day weekend of India and Pakistan. Sohni Mahiwal (or Suhni Mehar) is a long-established tragic romance from Sindh and Punjab\, dating back to the 10th century and regularly reworked in song\, theatre and film. The heroine Sohni\, unhappily married to a man she despises (usually depicted as a maker of pottery)\, swims every night across the river to her lover Mahiwal – whose name means ‘buffalo herder’ because he does indeed look after a herd buffaloes. The river is fierce and she uses an earthenware pot as a buoyancy aid; but her sister in law learns of the relationship and replaces it with a vessel of unbaked clay which dissolves in the water … \nThe production includes live music and creative storytelling in exploring themes of love\, sacrifice and tragedy in the face of social disapproval. It’s a collaboration between Behind the Mask Productions\, Tall Tales Productions\, and the Junction; the director\, Alishan Bin Sohail\, promises that “our talented cast and creative team\, combined with our commitment to producing a high-quality production\, make us confident that this play will resonate with audiences and provide an important perspective on the impact of natural disasters on love and relationships”. \nThe show is primarily in Urdu/Hindi\, but there are English subtitles.

SUMMARY:In the Heart of Another Country: the Diasporic Imagination Rises
DESCRIPTION:Originally shown at Deichtorhallen Hamburg\, this exhibition exploring the concept of home has been expanded for its Sharjah Art Foundation visit with the addition of recent acquisitions and newly restored works of art from the Foundation’s own collection. \nThe exhibition examines how mobility across space and time has shaped and contoured the frame of global art today. More than 150 works by over 60 artists will be on view\, including works by Etel Adnan\, Rasheed Araeen\, Huguette Caland\, Tiffany Chung\, Meschac Gaba\, David Koloane and Kamala Ibrahim Ishag. All the artists in the show have traversed migratory routes from South and West Asia\, through Africa and the Caribbean\, and many now live far from where they first believed that they belonged. \nOrganised in collaboration with Deichtorhallen Hamburg\, the exhibition is curated by Dr Omar Kholeif\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Collections and Senior Curator. \nTo 24 September. \nAbove: Etel Adnan\, Mount Tamalpaïs (2015)

SUMMARY:Van Gogh x Japan The Immersive Experience
DESCRIPTION:Van Gogh’s love for Japanese art ran deep: he admired the way Japanese artists lived in harmony with nature and the complete focus on their work\, and he aspired to do the same. Although he only discovered Japan in the latter years of his short life\, the results profoundly shaped his art and significantly influenced many of the works we now regard as his greatest masterpieces – especially in his use of exuberant colour. As he wrote to his brother: “we wouldn’t be able to study Japanese art … without becoming much happier and more cheerful”. \nThis show applies the 360° ToDA experience to the story – giant hi-res visuals\, surround-sound audio. Your ticket buys you a timed one-hour session between 10am and 11pm between 14 July and 31 August (adults AED 110\, children 3-11 AED 59\, and yes adulthood starts at age 12). Also available are family and group rates\, plus ‘bundle’ tickets that include an Ikebana masterclass\, a tea ceremony\, or a Haiku masterclass.
