SUMMARY:In the Heart of Another Country: the Diasporic Imagination Rises
DESCRIPTION:Originally shown at Deichtorhallen Hamburg\, this exhibition exploring the concept of home has been expanded for its Sharjah Art Foundation visit with the addition of recent acquisitions and newly restored works of art from the Foundation’s own collection. \nThe exhibition examines how mobility across space and time has shaped and contoured the frame of global art today. More than 150 works by over 60 artists will be on view\, including works by Etel Adnan\, Rasheed Araeen\, Huguette Caland\, Tiffany Chung\, Meschac Gaba\, David Koloane and Kamala Ibrahim Ishag. SUMMARY:Van Gogh x Japan The Immersive Experience
DESCRIPTION:Van Gogh’s love for Japanese art ran deep: he admired the way Japanese artists lived in harmony with nature and the complete focus on their work\, and he aspired to do the same. Although he only discovered Japan in the latter years of his short life\, the results profoundly shaped his art and significantly influenced many of the works we now regard as his greatest masterpieces – especially in his use of exuberant colour. As he wrote to his brother: “we wouldn’t be able to study Japanese art … without becoming much happier and more cheerful”. \nThis show applies the 360° ToDA experience to the story – giant hi-res visuals\, surround-sound audio. Your ticket buys you a timed one-hour session between 10am and 11pm between 14 July and 31 August (adults AED 110\, children 3-11 AED 59\, and yes adulthood starts at age 12). Also available are family and group rates\, plus ‘bundle’ tickets that include an Ikebana masterclass\, a tea ceremony\, or a Haiku masterclass.

There is a final performances on 25 June.

DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition with a seasonal theme: “summer is when all positive feelings surface allowing for a better appreciation of everything we do\,” says the curatorial statement. “A Summer Allegory aims to encompass this summer’s glamour through a selection of artists\, forms and subject matter”. \nThe artists: \nRichard Ketley – a South African based between Dubai and Johannesburg whose abstracts reflect his extensive: “I find meaning where others do not – in the fall of light on a sandy building in Riyadh\, the chaos of the shacks of Kampala\, the crowded taxi parks of Johannesburg …” \nSolimar Miller – a 25-year resident of the UAE who specialises in silkscreen works that highlight the unique qualities of the indigenous flora. \nElisabeth Dorazio – the Brazilian artist\, currently a Dubai resident\, has an impressively large body of work in different techniques and materials. “Her use of shifting and fragmented surfaces alludes to the existential and unstable nature of humanity and the natural world\,” says the gallery. \nColleen Quigley – a Japanese-American artist based in Tucson\, her practice encompasses a broad range of media including sculpture\, installation\, painting\, encaustic\, and digital fabrication on themes of materiality\, perception\, memory and place\, and the transcultural flow of objects. \nTo 7 September. \nAbove: Elisabeth Dorazio\, Untitled (from the On Nature series\, 2019)

SUMMARY:Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
DESCRIPTION:H72 Productions has found another interesting play for its current season. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike\, a comedy by the American writer Christopher Durang\, has been praised as a humorous adaptation of Chekhovian themes that doesn’t require any familiarity with Chekhov. Its story revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged single siblings; Vanya and Sonia live together\, supported financially by their sister Masha in their country house with a vestigial cherry orchard (Chekhov fans will of course spot the borrowings). They come together to talk about their lives\, reflecting on moments of joy and regret; the themes of old versus new generations\, real versus assumed identities\, the challenges of a woman growing older after success in a career that seems to be ending\, the hope and carelessness of youth are all  thrown into relief when Masha reveals plans to sell the family home … \nThe resulting bittersweet comedy is directed for H72 by Akansha Goenka (winner of Short+Sweet Theatre Festival 2022′). There are further performances at 7.30pm on 24 and 25 June.

DESCRIPTION:A continuation of the interesting Useless Palace exhibition\, a specific group show by ten artists staged in the desert by popup gallery InLoco (who are due to move into a permanent Al Quoz location this autumn) in the desert last December and subsequently implemented as metaverse show. This one brings the work home\, or at least to ME by Meliá\, with images from three of the artists Anton Selone (b.1988)\, documentary photographer\, especially of street art; Filippo Minelli (b.1983)\, contemporary Italian artist working with the reinterpretation of space; and Neda Salmanpour (b. 1993)\, Iranian designer and architect working at the intersection of regional design languages and mathematical models. The plot hinges on a rebellion led by a cleaner who takes hostage the daughter of the convenience business’s Mr Big to spark a rebellion. The original had an engaging self-referential tone that parodies the genre (“dreams only come true in happy musicals” says one of the characters). \nSPAA Marketing and Communications Manager Shiv Gnanam is promising a show “where the boundaries of musical theatre are pushed and laughter knows no bounds”. It’s directed by Paul Spicer\, Programme Leader for Musical Theatre at SPAA. \nThere are further performances at 7.30pm on 20 and 21 June.

DESCRIPTION:Fête de la Musique is an annual global celebration of music\, organised in France by the Ministry of Culture and in more than 1\,000 cities around the world by Alliance Françaises. It’s a day where free\, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks\, rooftops and gardens\, store fronts and mountaintops. Dubai doesn’t get that\, but it does have two performances by the Dubai Wind Band. In its 30 or so years DWB has seen a distinguished line of conductors\, and currently there are two baton-meisters: Adel Sahnoun (a distinguished flautist) and Melvin Rioveros (a former principal horn player with the Manilla Philharmonic Orchestra).

DESCRIPTION:Fever brings its candlelight classical music recitals to Abu Dhabi for the first time – “a series of classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live candlelit music performances … by creating intimate experiences where fans can connect directly with their favourite artists”. SUMMARY:Candlelight Concert: Vivaldi's Four Seasons
DESCRIPTION:One of the most successful production in the Candlelight Concerts series – “classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live music candlelit performances”.  The Vivaldi favourite was written as concerti for violin and orchestra\, but it’s often arranged for string quartet and this is what we’ll be getting here – “illuminated by thousands of candles”. \nThe programme also includes Karl Jenkins’ criminally underperformed Palladio suite\, which runs at around 20 minutes; with the Vivaldi clocking in at 40-45 ot so\, we reckon this should give you slightly more than an hour of candlelit concert. There are performances at 7.30 and 9.30pm.
