SUMMARY:CineMAS Love Is Not An Orange / Super 8 Years / Silences of the Palace
DESCRIPTION:3pm Love Is Not An Orange dir Otilia Babara (2022) \nIn the early 1990s\, women left Moldova in large numbers to provide for their families. Unable to return home\, they found a peculiar way to stay in touch: sending large cardboard boxes filled with the kind of gifts and food Romanians could only dream about in those days. In return\, their children would send videotapes. \nThrough these intimate private archives\, Otilia Babara depicts the fragility of family bonds through the eyes of a generation of mothers and daughters who were forced to live apart to survive. In doing so\, she portrays a post-soviet country caught at a crossroads of history — in which women were unwittingly put in charge of making the transition from communism to capitalism. \nRomanian with English subtitles. \n5pm The Super 8 Years dir David Ernaux-Briot\, Annie Ernaux (2022) \nFor over decade from 1972\, Philippe Ernaux used a Super 8 camera to capture family life\, from distant journeys to intimate moments. In this film made with her son David Ernaux-Briot\, Annie Ernaux (winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature) reflects on the stories told in the margins of the footage\, or beyond. As the children grew older and the marriage begins to come unstuck\, what remains is the film bearing weathered witness to what once was … \nFrench with English subtitles. Presented in collaboration with Institut Français. There’s a post-screening discussion between Hind Mezaina and Yann Rodier\, Head of History Department at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi. \n7.30pm Silences of the Palace dir Moufida Tlatli (1996) \nThe patriarchs of the Tunisian elite marry within their own class but enjoy as concubines the women who serve the household and live downstairs. In adolescence\, Alia\, the child of one of these upstairs–downstairs relationships\, becomes increasingly aware of her own mother’s predicament in this power dynamic; Alia herself does not feel liberated\, even by the musical talent which has given her a career. She must confront her own past before she can come to terms with her mother’s life and death\, and thereby free herself. \nFrench with English subtitles. \nThe CineMAS contemporary Arab cinema series is a mini-festival of independent films curated by Hind Mezaina and presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program in partnership with the NYUAD Arts Center. Day tickets are AED 30\, weekend (Saturday & Sunday) tickets are AED 50\, a full-week pass is AED 150..

Wednesday Addams\, the ultimate princess of darkness\, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet\, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough\, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now\, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before: keep a secret from his beloved wife\, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents … \nClaire Bennett directs\, the musical director is Adam Laird. The production has a cast of 50\, a live 12-piece band\, and a “stunning” professionally built set. We’re promised “a number of showstopper songs” (when we saw a version of the show a while ago we counted around 20 of them\, and particularly liked the Move Towards the Darkness finale) “and elaborate dance routines”. Sounds like a load of fun …

SUMMARY:CineMAS – A Letter From Al Barzakh / All of Our Heartbeats Are Connected Through Exploding Stars / Fragments From Heaven
DESCRIPTION:7pm A Letter From Al Barzakh dir Waleed Al Madani (2019) \nAl Barzakh is a period of time where the dead live between the moment they die and their judgement day. In this short experimental documentary\, Al Madani takes the audience to this place\, imagining his first moments there\, “the moments I start to realise my loneliness\, realise that I’m not going to see my mother again\, my ocean of thoughts\, my fire … and the moment I realise where I am\, freed from loneliness”. Arabic with English subtitles. \n7.15pm All of Our Heartbeats Are Connected Through Exploding Stars dir Jennifer Rainsford (2022) \nIn the wake the largest earthquake in modern history\, and the devastating tsunami that followed\, we meet Yasu\, who dives in search of his lost wife; Sachiko\, who writes letters to her husband who was taken by the wave; and Satoko\, a young woman struggling to overcome her trauma. Backed by scientific research and a staggering score by Teho Teardo\, Jennifer Rainsford’s debut feature tells the tale of the interconnectedness of the living organisms on planet Earth. Swedish and Japanese with English subtitles. \n9pm Fragments From Heaven dir Adnane Baraka (2022) \nLooking for rocks in the vastness of the Moroccan desert may seem absurd — unless they are celestial stones\, with the power to change the lives of those who find them. Mohamed\, the nomad\, and Abderrahmane\, the scientist\, comb the arid lands looking for meteorites\, each for his own reasons. An enigmatic documentary quest into the desert shot\, edited\, and sound-designed by Moroccan filmmaker Adnana Baraka. Arabic and French with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:The Addams Family – A New Musical
DESCRIPTION:MTDXB (Musical Theatre Dubai) is – as far as we know – the first and only adult theatre group in Dubai to specialise in musicals. Formed in 2021\, they have done four performances to date\, and they tend to be best-of cabaret-type shows like this one; but the team has managed to gather an impressive addressbook of once-pro and semi-pro performers\, mostly from Britain\, who between them can boast of a wealth of experience. \nSo this full-scale exercise should be good. It’s an original story (book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice\, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa) that provides a sequel to the original Addams Family story. SUMMARY:Talal Al Najjar\, Ziad Al Najjar: Symbiotic Hyperreal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition marks the first duo show for Emirati brothers Talal Al Najjar and Ziad Al Najjar. They each maintain a distinct individual artistic practice\, but developed in close proximity to one another; and both draw upon their relationship to their surroundings\, particularly Dubai\, where they grew up. \nViewed together\, the works of Talal and Ziad create a quality of simulation\, unrealness\, or hyperreality (the inability to distinguish from a simulation of reality). From the moment that the viewer enters the space\, they are watching\, but there is also a sense of being watched. \nTo 14 June. \nThis exhibition is curated by Tala Nassar; it marks Nassar’s final project at The NYUAD Art Gallery\, before departing to pursue graduate study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat.

SUMMARY:Monty Python's Spamalot
DESCRIPTION:You probably won’t have more fun in the theatre this year: based on (“ripped off from”) the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail\, this highly irreverent musical parody of Arthurian legend has lyrics and book by Python’s Eric Idle and a score by Idle and John Du Prez. It’s funny and clever\, and it’s brought to us by the Abu Dhabi Choral Group\, the UAE’s longest established amateur music group – now in its 45th season\, and with more than 75 shows in its back catalogue. Recommended. \nThere are further shows at 7.30pm on 1\, 2 and 3 June\, with a 2pm matinée on 3 June too.

SUMMARY:Press Print!
DESCRIPTION:A group show that celebrates printmaking practices in the UAE\, especially “the inherent experimental potential and various techniques available to artists working today”. From the gallery’s press release: \n\nDubai-based illustrator and printmaker Azim Al Ghussein experiments with image making methods and materials outside the conventional studio. Made using linocut\, tetrapak drypoint and risograph techniques\, Azim’s prints are thoughtful explorations of the capacity for sharing (and caring)\, distribution\, and hospitality.\nUAE-based American printmaker and lecturer Brian Gonzales presents a new series of CMYK screenprints depicting irrational compositions and vibrant colour schemes. The abstract prints that mark the artist’s sixth year in the UAE belong to Brian’s wider narrative unravelling endless enigmas.\nIn a new series of etchings and screenprints\, Diego Mendoza explores culture induced concepts of masculinity by layering multiple image transfer methods to create pattern compositions of overlapping imagery. With visual references to mythological\, current\, and cross-cultural representations of the subject\, Diego portrays changing spectrums of measuring masculinity.\nHala El Abora takes an experimental and interdisciplinary approach to materialise her printmaking process beyond the surface. Inspired by archiving practices\, Hala’s work explores acts of preservation\, merging the real and imaginary into permanent objects facing the test of time.\nJi-Hye Kim conveys the question of self-identity by reflecting on the properties of the UAE’s rocky mountains against natural occurrences\, such as rain and wind. In new large-scale monoprints\, the artist traces the textures of these mountains as if recalling their memories and transformation overtime.\nEmirati artist Khalid Mezaina presents a new body of mixed media prints on paper and fabric\, drawing from his research on regional and historical talismanic practices. In these works\, Khalid repetitively uses simple shape stamps to compose images of movement rituals\, such as dancing.\nSafeya Sharif explores the concept of selective memory in a new series of embossed and linocut prints. By isolating selected scenes of her signature endless hallways\, Safeya highlights the correlation between memory and imagination.\nSalama Nasib presents a new series of prints as part of her continued exploration of memory. In this playful series\, Salama looks at childhood desires to play\, collaging a print illustration of her family home’s slide against screenprinted backdrops of the past.\n\nThe exhibition includes a Print Exchange\, a collection of limited edition prints by each of the eight participating artists available for purchase. \nTo 7 September.

SUMMARY:CineMAS – Under the Fig Tree: dir Erige Sehiri (2022)
DESCRIPTION:In northwest Tunisia\, young women work the summer harvest. Largely improvised and set on a single day\, this film by Erige Sehiri (who is perhaps better known as a documentary maker) packs argument\, gossip\, romance and social criticism into a busy day of fruit picking in Northern Tunisia. Friendships\, enmities\, generational and political disputes and embryonic and failed love affairs are revealed to us … Highly recommended. \nThis film opens the CineMAS contemporary Arab cinema series\, a mini-festival of independent films curated by Hind Mezaina and presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program in partnership with the NYUAD Arts Center. DESCRIPTION:The second of two films by Cousineau explores the death of a young Inuk man\, Solomon Tapatiaq Uyarasuk\, who is found dead in a remote Inuit community. SUMMARY:City of Stars
DESCRIPTION:Aspiring actress and young jazz musician find love in Los Angeles. Yes\, it’s the plot of La-La Land\, and City of Stars ∼ which also happens to be one of the better songs from the soundtrack – is an adaptation of the Oscar winner for the stage by Yasseen Ashri\, star of numerous Short+Sweet playlets and director of a successful Shakespeare in Love at the Junction last year. He also directs this time\, working with two dozen performers from The Greenroom youth theatre group; we’re promised masterful storytelling and breathtaking sets\, plus most of the songs from the film. \nThere are further performances at 2pm and 7.30pm on 28 May.
