SUMMARY:Sunday Morning
DESCRIPTION:Successful 40s-ish photographer Mat (James Cuningham) takes us on a heart-warming\, epiphanic journey in this one-man show\, written by Nick Warren and directed by Jenine Collocott. On learning that his girlfriend is pregnant\, a stunned Mat goes for a jog in his neighbourhood to do some thinking. Straying from his regular route he ventures into an unknown and rundown section of the city where he makes a gruesome discovery that changes everything … This fast-paced show is infused with the kind of wit\, acute observation\, real suspense\, imminent danger\, selfish need\, and poignant humanity that are the basic elements of urban life in contemporary South Africa\, where it’s a multiple award winner.

SUMMARY:Thousand Nights and One
DESCRIPTION:“A mesmerising tapestry of tales” promises the blurb. Written and directed by Rasika Agashe\, it’s a magical look at the fate of Scheherazade\, the narrator of the original ‘One Thousand and One Nights’. Rasika Agashe says she has long been fascinated by the Arabian Nights stories; “reading them now\, I realize they are about strong women who navigate their survival through storytelling. That’s the power of storytelling!” \nAt the core of her approach to the Scheherazade story (a Sultan weds anew each day\, only to have the bride slain at dawn to preempt any treachery: Scheherazade bucks the trend by captivating him with her stories\, sparing her life with each new sunrise) is the enigmatic Fakir (Dee Gee)\, who holds the key to Scheherazade’s storytelling; and Amina (Audrey Vaz)\, whose journey of secrets and survival embodies the resilience of women in the face of destiny. \nThere’s a second performance on 9 March.

SUMMARY:Gidion's Knot
DESCRIPTION:The final performances (at 2pm and 8pm) for this powerful two-hander by Johanna Adams. Over the course of a parent/teacher conference\, a grieving mother and an emotionally overwhelmed primary school teacher have a fraught conversation about the tragic suicide of the mother’s son. Gidion may have been bullied – or he may have been an abuser … As his story is slowly uncovered\, the women try to reconstruct a satisfying explanation for Gidion’s act as they come to terms with their own feelings of culpability. \nOsman Aboubakr directs Eliane Germanos and Caroline Hamrén. \n

DESCRIPTION:Over the course of a parent/teacher conference\, a grieving mother and an emotionally overwhelmed primary school teacher have a fraught conversation about the tragic suicide of the mother’s son. Gidion may have been bullied – or he may have been an abuser … \nAs his story is slowly uncovered\, the women try to reconstruct a satisfying explanation for Gidion’s act as they come to terms with their own feelings of culpability and the roles of the school system and parents in the development of children. \nThe title of this powerful two-hander by Johanna Adams is a punning reference to the Gordian Knot that Alexander the Great famously cut with a sword instead of untying like so many before him had tried but failed to do. The knot that remains tied is the play’s unanswered puzzle: what drove Gidion to suicide? What was he really like? \nOsman Aboubakr directs Eliane Germanos and Caroline Hamrén. There are further performances on 8 and 9 February at 2pm and 8pm both days. \n

SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:A second performance for Complices Théâtre’s production of this fun comedy. It’s mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. An imposing Shakespearian actor tells incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nNote that as well as the ticket price\, you’ll need access to Alserkal Avenue’s Quoz Arts Fest to get at the Junction. So add an extra AED 63 to the cost of the outing. It’s still worth it. \n
