SUMMARY:Dear Children\, Sincerely...
DESCRIPTION:Directed by the noted Sri Lankan playwright\, director and activist Ruwanthie de Chickera\, this eclectic ensemble production is a collaboration between Stages Theatre Group\, Sri Lanka and Mashirika\, Rwanda. Dear Children\, Sincerely (DCS) is an ongoing research project\, initiated in Sri Lanka in 2015\, which gathers stories from people born in the 1930s in the two countries and presents them to younger generations through live performance. These are people who had experienced colonisation and journeyed out of it\, having to face civil war and worse; more than 70 senior citizens have been interviewed through the DCS project and so far more than two dozen stories exploring the parallel colonial and post-colonial histories of Rwanda and Sri Lanka have been created for performance. \nThe international cast  has been reunited after ten years for this performance of three of the plays: \nSeven Decades Deep: an historical journey that moves between Rwanda and Sri Lanka from 1930 to 1990 with tales of colonisation\, independence\, exile\, insurrections and genocide. \nMy Family Marriage: a humorous merging of traditional wedding customs from the two countries\, exploring how older Rwandan and Sri Lankan generations experienced family and matrimony. \nUpside Down Land: drawing from Rwanda’s and Sri Lanka’s dark histories of genocide\, pogroms and civil war\, this story delves into the complete physical and psychological collapse of a society subjected to prolonged anarchy and terror. \nThere is a second performance tomorrow (27 Sept) at the same time.

SUMMARY:Agatha Christie: Black Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Agatha Christie’s first piece of writing for the stage\, initially produced in 1930 and the start of a successful second career for her as a playwright. In her 1977 autobiography she describes it as “a conventional spy thriller … full of cliches” but she also notes that “it was\, I think\, not at all bad”. Indeed\, its format is familiar enough – scientist/inventor Sir Claud Amory discovers that someone in his household has stolen the secret formula\, the guests are gathered in the library (via a neat and unusual trick) and traps legendary detective Hercule Poirot plus his assistant Captain Hastings arrive to investigate … but Amory is murdered before they can get started\, and Poirot’s little grey cells have to work overtime … \nWe don’t know any details of the cast or director\, but it is a fun play and should make for a good evening. There are further performances at 7.30pm on 27 and 28 September\, with a 2.30pm matinee as well on the Sunday.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare's Othello
DESCRIPTION:A much acclaimed version of Shakespeare’s original\, adapted for Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre by director Lara Foot. Other reworkings of Othello have riffed on the notion of the outsider (and a victim of racism) who will always be looked down on by the likes of Brabantio and the Duke; Lara Foot takes it beyond the individual to speak specifically to the violence of genocidal colonialisation\, setting it in 1880s Namibia (which at the time was German Southwest Africa) and inviting the audiences to see the legacies of the brutal violence of colonisation. \nTo make the point she has staged the play in several languages\, isiXhosa and Afrikaans as well as English; and Shakespeare’s Duke has become Otto von Bismarck\, discussing with his officers how to slice up Africa. \nThis feels like an unmissable insight into contemporary southern Africa\, the colonial experience generally\, and maybe Shakespeare too. It probably wouldn’t work without a strong production team – costumes and the very clever set design by Gerhard Marx\, music by Kyle Shepherd\, lighting by Patrick Curtis\, and a cast led by Atandwa Kani as Othello with Albert Pretorius (Iago) and Carla Smith (Desdemona). \nThe performance on 9 October will be followed by a Q&A with Lara Foot and the creative team\, moderated by Shamoon Zamir\, NYUAD Professor of Literature and Art History. \n

SUMMARY:Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:The fourth edition of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme of performances opens with Muhanad Kareem’s adaptation of the 2009 novel by Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk. \nIn a remote village\, surrounded by a dense forest full of wild animals\, a series of mysterious murders begins to claim the lives of hunters. As the killings escalate\, the quiet tension builds into a confrontation between humanity and nature … \nPerforming on a minimal yet striking set\, the actors draw the audience into a world suspended between illusion and reality. Through its narrative\, the play deliberates on the pervasive violence that shapes our world\, and its impact on both current and future generations. \nThe performance is in Arabic and will be preceded by an opening reception.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare for Kidz: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
DESCRIPTION:First staged to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival in the late 1990s\, Shakespeare 4 Kidz’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a lively\, funny and accessible musical retelling of Shakespeare’s timeless classic. SUMMARY:The Ugly One
DESCRIPTION:When the extent of his ugliness is revealed\, Lette turns to a plastic surgeon for help – but when the bandages come off\, Lette soon learns that there is such a thing as too beautiful … \nTranslated from the original German\, Marius von Mayenburg’s very dark comedy about beauty\, identity and getting ahead in life “makes its points with the lightest of touches” (The Guardian). SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:As his mother battles chronic depression\, a child creates a list of every thing they can think of that makes life worth living. As the child grows\, so does the list. Looking back on a life of ups and downs\, the man takes the audience on an inspiring journey that celebrates finding joy in the mundane and being grateful for the simple pleasures hiding all around us. \nAdapted and directed by Ahmed El Attar\, this Arabic version of a touching\, funny\, and uplifting English-language play (the original is by the English playwright/director Duncan Macmillan) was a big hit in the first edition of Perform Sharjah. For the current edition of Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme\, it has two performances (on 24 and 25 October).

SUMMARY:Eureka Day
DESCRIPTION:Eureka Day Elementary School is an institution that prides itself on ensuring every voice is heard\, and every child is welcome — that is\, until an outbreak of mumps forces people in the community to reconsider the school’s liberal vaccine policy. As cases rise\, the school’s Executive Committee of well-meaning parents and teachers fall apart as their progressive paradise crumbles and meetings are derailed by parental hysteria … \nThis razor-sharp comedy by American playwright Jonathan Spector has had successful recent runs on Broadway and in the West End.  It’s laugh-out-loud funny\, but there’s a message inside: even the most enlightened communities are just one epidemic away from complete turmoil. \nNot a bad choice for The Junction’s tenth anniversary. It’s directed by Akansha and Gautam Goenka\, founders of The Junction. \nThere are further performances on 22 and 23 November. \n

SUMMARY:Thousand Nights and One
DESCRIPTION:Written and directed by Rasika Agashe\, this magical look at the fate of Scheherazade\, the narrator of the original ‘One Thousand and One Nights’\, is back for one night only (it was at the Junction in March this year). Rasika Agashe says she has long been fascinated by the Arabian Nights stories; “reading them now\, I realize they are about strong women who navigate their survival through storytelling. That’s the power of storytelling!” \nAt the core of her approach to the Scheherazade story (a Sultan weds anew each day\, only to have the bride slain at dawn to preempt any treachery: Scheherazade bucks the trend by captivating him with her stories\, sparing her life with each new sunrise) is the enigmatic Fakir (Dee Gee)\, who holds the key to Scheherazade’s storytelling; and Amina (Audrey Vaz)\, whose journey of secrets and survival embodies the resilience of women in the face of destiny.

SUMMARY:The Unfriend
DESCRIPTION:Peter and Debbie are a timorous suburban couple who are “dying of manners”. They can’t communicate with their teenage children\, can’t stand their neighbour\, and can’t believe they have agreed to host a brash American\, Elsa\, who was amusing company when they met on a cruise … but that was then. Her arrival prompts Peter to yearn for a real-life equivalent of Facebook’s ‘unfriend’ button. After all\, if the internet rumours are to be believed she may well be a murderer. Still\, that’s no reason to kick her out\, is it? \nThis well-reviewed black comedy of crumbling boundaries and exquisite embarrassment was written by Steven Moffat\, showrunner and head writer of Doctor Who (2010–2017) and co-creator of Sherlock (2010–2017)\, and is directed for H72 Productions by Priya Pinto. There are further performances on 13 and 14 December. \n

SUMMARY:War and Peace
DESCRIPTION:Tolstoy’s epic novel has often resisted dramatisation as a one-off theatrical performance – it’s huge\, after all\, which is the classic BBC series from 1972 ran for fully 20 episodes and Sergei Bondarchuk’s film adaptation from the 60s spanned seven hours in four parts. This version\, by celebrated director Rimas Tuminas and delivered by the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia\, comes in a more manageable four hours plus a (much needed) intermission; but it has still received favourable reviews\, with few complaints about its sweep and spectacle – it seems that most of the grandeur and complexity of Tolstoy’s work has been retained\, with the Napoleonic Wars as the background for the lives\, ambitions\, hopes and sorrows of the three families portrayed: the Rostovs\, the Bolkonskys\, the Kuragins. \nIt’s performed in Russian with English surtitles. There’s a second performance on 18 January at 5pm.
