SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:A very welcome return for this single-hander play that has already been a smash hit at the Junction four times in the last three years. It’s not hard to see why: written by the English playwright/director Duncan Macmillan with actor/writer/comedian Johnny Donahoe\, it manages to be both intimate and interactive\, a touching\, funny\, and uplifting play that chronicles life’s small joys and reveals the lengths to which we will go for those we love. \nAs his mother battles chronic depression\, a child creates a list of every thing they can think of that makes life worth living. As the child grows\, so does the list. Looking back on a life of ups and downs\, the man takes the audience on an inspiring journey that celebrates finding joy in the mundane and being grateful for the simple pleasures hiding all around us. \nThe Guardian called the original Edinburgh Festival production “one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression – and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see\, full stop”. The Junction’s main man Gautam Goenka directs and performs. Highly recommended. \nThere are further performances on 13 and 14 September. \n

SUMMARY:Game. Set. Match.
DESCRIPTION:The Playhouse Studio Theatre at New Covent Garden (located in a much-revamped Mall of the Emirates space that now includes a fully-equipped 575-seater theatre plus dance and rehearsal studios and a new restaurant) opens with this new Tall Tales / Cross Bronx Studio production.. \nIt has been adapted from the 2016 Italian film Perfect Strangers\, itself a critical and commercial success that has resonated with audiences around the world and generated a number of remakes and reworkings; for this production\, writer Sid Abbas has switched the locale to Dubai’s tennis scene. Set in a luxury tennis club suite\, the play follows seven long-time friends reunited for a destination wedding; but a seemingly innocent game of sharing phone messages and calls turns into digital Russian roulette. Secrets\, affairs\, emotional confessions\, and some truly terrible texting etiquette emerge … We’re promised fast-paced dialogue\, laugh-out-loud moments\, and gut-punch emotional turns: “if you’ve ever been in a relationship\, had a group chat\, or made a mistake you hoped your partner would never see — this play is for you”. \nSatya Baskaran directs. \nThe play run 12 to 14 September at 7.30pm\, with a 3pm matinée on 13 September.

SUMMARY:Dear Children\, Sincerely...
DESCRIPTION:Directed by the noted Sri Lankan playwright\, director and activist Ruwanthie de Chickera\, this eclectic ensemble production is a collaboration between Stages Theatre Group\, Sri Lanka and Mashirika\, Rwanda. Dear Children\, Sincerely (DCS) is an ongoing research project\, initiated in Sri Lanka in 2015\, which gathers stories from people born in the 1930s in the two countries and presents them to younger generations through live performance. These are people who had experienced colonisation and journeyed out of it\, having to face civil war and worse; more than 70 senior citizens have been interviewed through the DCS project and so far more than two dozen stories exploring the parallel colonial and post-colonial histories of Rwanda and Sri Lanka have been created for performance. \nThe international cast  has been reunited after ten years for this performance of three of the plays: \nSeven Decades Deep: an historical journey that moves between Rwanda and Sri Lanka from 1930 to 1990 with tales of colonisation\, independence\, exile\, insurrections and genocide. \nMy Family Marriage: a humorous merging of traditional wedding customs from the two countries\, exploring how older Rwandan and Sri Lankan generations experienced family and matrimony. \nUpside Down Land: drawing from Rwanda’s and Sri Lanka’s dark histories of genocide\, pogroms and civil war\, this story delves into the complete physical and psychological collapse of a society subjected to prolonged anarchy and terror. \nThere is a second performance tomorrow (27 Sept) at the same time.

SUMMARY:Agatha Christie: Black Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Agatha Christie’s first piece of writing for the stage\, initially produced in 1930 and the start of a successful second career for her as a playwright. In her 1977 autobiography she describes it as “a conventional spy thriller … full of cliches” but she also notes that “it was\, I think\, not at all bad”. Indeed\, its format is familiar enough – scientist/inventor Sir Claud Amory discovers that someone in his household has stolen the secret formula\, the guests are gathered in the library (via a neat and unusual trick) and traps legendary detective Hercule Poirot plus his assistant Captain Hastings arrive to investigate … but Amory is murdered before they can get started\, and Poirot’s little grey cells have to work overtime … \nWe don’t know any details of the cast or director\, but it is a fun play and should make for a good evening. There are further performances at 7.30pm on 27 and 28 September\, with a 2.30pm matinee as well on the Sunday.
