SUMMARY:La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class
DESCRIPTION:This 45-minute play is a joyful lesson in theatre and a tribute to the theatrical talent of Italians for connecting to anyone\, transcending language barriers. Set partly in English and partly in Italian (and without subtitles)\, the show ironically demolishes preconceived notions of the difficulty of theatre language and highlights how communication problems can be solved with theatrical bodywork \nThe plot is simple enough\, set in the tradition of the comedy of errors: an Italian actress (Francesca Bizzarri\, who also developed the piece) receives a student (played by Goffredo Puccetti) for a private drama lesson in her apartment; he is eager to learn the tricks of the trade\, she is thrilled at the idea of making him fall in love with Italian theatre. She sits him down and searches through her library\, preparing the ideal acting class for him – from Plautus to Pirandello via Dario Fo. The lesson falters on language problems\, and communication breaks down until the universal language of commedia dell’arte comes to the rescue …

SUMMARY:torn
DESCRIPTION:Written and directed by award winning Australian writer/director Alex Broun\, assisted by Alexander Rondel\, torn is described as “a sexy\, fast-paced\, brutal\, funny and at times moving dissection of post-millennium relationships … With echoes of Patrick Marber’s Closer\, torn is about the impossibility and possibility of love in a modern world where choices abound and nothing is forever”. We’re inclined to trust that summary; Alex Broun has an excellent track record in scripting and directing engaging\, entertaining and sometimes illuminating theatre\, and torn had a very successful run earlier this year in the QEII Theatre . \nThe piece is set in modern-day New York\, with four people in various stages of connection – lawyer Susan (Nadine Basiony) is in a relationship with advertising executive Cade (Osman Aboubakr: that’s them above)\, and Gerry (Basel Yafi)\, a voice-over artist\, is in love with Susan’s PA Daniella (Kethy Kist). \nIt will be performed at The Fridge in what’s termed “intimate mode” with the audience fully immersed in the action (“they will be so close that they can literally reach out and touch the actors … although we are hoping that they won’t!”).  Quite apart from the theatrical experience\, this means there will be only 70 seats available per performance – early booking is recommended. \nThere are 8pm performances on 11\, 12 and 13 October\, with a 5pm show too on 12 and 13 October.

SUMMARY:Dracula
DESCRIPTION:Kate Hamill’s “feminist revenge fantasy” infuses the familiar vampire tale with post-modern wit and “a stake through the heart of toxic masculinity”\, as the New York Times put it when it was first performed. “The world women inhabit in this loose\, rollicking adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel is frightening precisely because it’s not so different from our own …” It’s also great fun\, a racy\, action-packed narrative that should make for a highly entertaining evening. Satyen Chandiramani directs for the Junction’s resident H72 Productions. \nThere are further performances at 7.30pm on 19 and 20 October\, with a 2pm matinée on 20 October.

SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:This production debuted for four performances in May and two in July; all sold out (deservedly). It’s now back for a run at Theatre by QE2 on 26 and 27 October\, followed by one show on 17 November\, and it’s highly recommended. \nIt’s an English version of an award-winning French comedy from 2021\, Les Gros Patinent Bien\, by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan. They reworked the original for an Anglophone audience at the Edinburgh Festival as The Ice Hole\, and there were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. Matthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht\, two-time winners of the local Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival\, for Complices Théâtre. \n

SUMMARY:Mute
DESCRIPTION:This experimental theatre piece by the Kuwaiti director and playwright Sulayman Al Bassam examines that brief moment of silence that followed the Beirut port explosion of 2020. Produced with actress Hala Omran and the band Two or The Dragon\, the performance blends music and singing with prose and audiovisual elements. A wide departure from the norms of Arab theatre\, the play’s structure is likened by Abou El Fetouh to that of a poem. \nMute has won awards at the Carthage Theatre Festival and the Cairo International Experimental Theatre Festival. Part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme\, Mute is co-presented by the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy.

SUMMARY:The Woman in Black
DESCRIPTION:Susan Hill’s elegantly eerie ghost story has been seen by more than seven million people in the stage adaptation by Stephen Mallatratt\, and very few will have been disappointed (or unshaken). A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough\, but as they reach further into his darkest memories\, the borders between make-believe and reality begin to blur as the Woman in Black reveals her terrible purpose … \nThe Daily Telegraph called it “the most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter”; the Guardian went with “one of British theatre’s biggest – and scariest – hits”. This award-winning production sold out its previous runs in the UAE; directed by John Payton who also boasts the credit for Music and Sound Design\, it is produced by Lucy Magee of West End Worldwide\, the company behind more than 50 of the UAE’s most successful touring productions. \nThere are further performances on 31 October and 1 and 2 November.
