SUMMARY:City Circles: Architecture beyond walls – the role of landscaping in urban placemaking
DESCRIPTION:Part of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s ongoing City Circles programme exploring the connections between architecture\, the environment\, and urban life\, this conversation explores how culture is shaped not only inside museums and galleries but also in the public spaces and gardens where people gather\, meet and spend time together. How can landscape architecture create places that reflect local identity\, encourage community life and support cultural activity? These talks are both interesting and genuinely useful; let’s hope some kind of publication (print or online) comes out of them … \nThe panel: \nZain Masud Landscape Designer\nLulu Almana Landscape Architect\nLara Zureikat Landscape Architect\nModerator: Iaroslav Volovod Curator\, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi

SUMMARY:Van Gogh: Light from Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Art historian Rose Balston leads a deep dive into Van Gogh’s life\, art and legacy with a talk that goes behind the myth of the “tortured genius”\, the madman\, the failure “into the real story of an artist whose convictions about truth\, dignity and human connection were absolutely uncompromising”. Also included: tenor Charles McGlone singling Don McLean’s ‘Starry\, Starry Night’\, a reflection on art as healing by transpersonal psychologist Nargis Raza\, and food and drinks throughout (“substantial” canapés\, mocktails\, “other drinks”). Interesting factoid\, courtesy of Ms Balston: Van Gogh considered ‘Starry Night’ a weak painting (actually he referred to it in letters to his brother Theo as a “failure”  – he felt that he had “reached for stars that are too big”) and regarded ‘The Potato Eaters’ as “the best thing I did”.

SUMMARY:The Art of Standup / Find the Funny
DESCRIPTION:Dubai comedy heavyweight Miqdaad Dohadwala (main man at Mad Cat Comedy) explores stand-up as a serious creative craft\, has some practical advice to would-be comics\, and offers thoughts about why Dubai’s comedy scene is so strong right now. This chat is followed by a practical demonstration in the form of a AED 200 comedy workshop with Miqdaad at 8.15pm. \nThese are among several events being run under the Rooted label\, a collaborative project involving five organisations who successfully applied for one of Alserkal Avenue’s free four-week community-oriented warehouse initiatives – “bringing together artists\, writers\, musicians\, makers and fashion creators to explore ideas of identity\, place\, and belonging in Dubai”. Rooted has events running to 13 June. Most are paid-for workshops\, and none the worse for that; we prefer not to list commercial workshop activities and classes\, however. SUMMARY:Museums\, Social Media\, and Public Space
DESCRIPTION:This NYUAD Institute talk considers how artworks operate across different contexts\, from museums and galleries to public spaces and digital circulation. Drawing on over 15 years of experience\, Bahia Shehab reflects on how audience engagement shifts when art is encountered within institutional settings versus when it is publicly displayed and exposed to everyday life. Through examples from projects in cities such as New York\, Istanbul\, Marrakesh\, and Hawaii\, the talk looks at how art travels\, remains relevant across geographies\, and is shaped by social media. \nThe speaker is a practising artist and a professor of practice in design (and founder of the graphic design programme) at The American University in Cairo\, where she developed a full design curriculum mainly focused on the visual culture of the Arab world.

SUMMARY:School is a City: Prasad Shetty and Rupali Gupte
DESCRIPTION:Prasad Shetty and Rupali Gupte reflect on the motivations and challenges that shaped their commitment to the School of Environment and Architecture in Mumbai which they founded in 2014. Today\, it is a fully accredited architecture school with around 200 students\, 30 faculty members\, and a reputation for a critical and playfully experimental approach. SUMMARY:Art Thinking: The Intricacies of Corporate and Brand Patronage
DESCRIPTION:What do Louis Vuitton\, Marina Abramović and BMW have in common? According to cultural strategist Vadim Grigoryan in his newly published book\, Art Thinking: Art\, Meaning and Brand Leadership\, they are all players in the evolving relationship between the art world and brands – where creativity meets commerce and where brands increasingly function as cultural agents. \nThe book invites readers to explore the intersection of art\, luxury\, and fashion brands\, examining the role of brands as cultural agents and the potential of art to serve as a bridge between meaning and management. It offers practical guidance for developing strategic art initiatives\, managing artist collaborations\, and understanding the artistic process behind creativity. \nAs part of the launch for Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s new Executive Education Program on ‘Art and Luxury’\, focusing on luxury branding in the Gulf countries\, Vadim Grigoryan will introduce his book and discuss the role of art and culture in building brands today – with emphasis on the importance of high-level academic programmes as an added value for management in the luxury sector.
