SUMMARY:Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art
DESCRIPTION:The theme for VCUarts Qtara’s 11th biennial Symposium on Islamic Art\, Islam and Visual Culture in Contemporary Asia\, aims for a fresh look at how Muslim communities across South\, Southeast\, and East Asia are engaging with Islamic art. The co-chairs\, Hala Auji and Radha Dalal\, have spent a good deal of time on the ground in cities like Hong Kong\, Singapore and Seoul\, meeting with curators\, artists\, and scholars to better understand how Islamic art is being produced\, displayed\, and lived in contemporary Asian contexts; this research has informed a Symposium that is both rigorous and responsive (says the promotional material). It brings together academic insight\, creative practice\, and lived experience to ask how Islamic art continues to evolve across geographies; from photomedia and textiles to architecture and community-based installations\, the programme reflects a spectrum of artistic expression.

SUMMARY:FIELDWORK: Cultural Histories\, Rural Futures
DESCRIPTION:A two-day symposium reflecting on agrarian knowledge\, cultural memory\, and the role of rural communities in shaping their own futures. Through talks\, lectures\, screenings and site visits\, the programme engages with urgent questions around how land is used\, who works it\, and what happens when these relationships are disrupted.  It considers histories of farming\, migration\, and policy as they relate to rural life\, while reflecting on our responsibility to recognise the agency\, resilience and knowledge embedded in farming life. \nThe symposium runs in conjunction with the current exhibition by Asunción Molinos Gordo\, The Peasant\, the Scholar and the Engineer. \nThe speakers: \nAsunción Molinos Gordo research-based artist working to generate a less urban-centric way of understanding progress\nAnahi Alviso-Marino Biso scholar and researcher whose work focuses on cultural production across cities of the Arabian peninsula throuhg publication\, films\, exhibitions\, and game-type protocols in public programmes\nNezar Andary filmmaker\, writer\, and curator who has been Artistic Director of the Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival and the artistic director of the Performing Books Season with the House of Wisdom\nRami Zurayk scholar activist specialising in ecosystem management and food systems. He co-founded the Arab Food Sovereignty Network\nRafael SM Paniagua works\, teaches\, researches\, and creates at the intersection of aesthetics\, the arts\, and philosophy\, focusing on the social dimension of art and minor cultures\nAndrea Pacheco Chilean curator and independent researcher based in Madrid\, whose work explores contemporary debates on memory\, migration\, diaspora\, and transnational identities \nThe symposium runs 3 to 7pm on Saturday\, 11am to 6pm on Sunday. SUMMARY:Toni Morrison Felowship Inauguration
DESCRIPTION:Toni Morrison’s novels have reshaped American literature\, exploring themes of identity\, the human experience\, and cultural understanding with remarkable depth. The Africa Institute is inaugurating its Toni Morrison Senior Fellowship in African Diaspora Literature and Cultural Studies with a two-day symposium celebrating her life and legacy through film screenings and discussions. \nThe Fellowship is aimed at supporting established scholars and independent thinkers who have made significant contributions to African and African Diaspora literature and cultural studies. The first recipient is Philathia Bolton\, Associate Professor of English at the University of Akron\, Ohio.\, and she’ll be participating in the discussions. \nThe full programme is here. It includes two feature-length films: The Foreigner’s Home (dir Rian Brown and Geoff Pingree\, 2018) shows on 28 February and explores Toni Morrison’s artistic and intellectual vision through her 2006 exhibition at the Louvre to illuminate her insights on race\, identity\, and the transformative power of art. Day two has Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (dir Timothy Greenfield-Sanders\, 2019)\, an intimate exploration of Morrison’s life and work that features interviews with figures like Hilton Als\, Angela Davis\, and Oprah Winfrey. Screenings are followed by panel discussions. \n

SUMMARY:Colorful Threads: The Interwoven Worlds of Art and Culture in the Western Indian Ocean
DESCRIPTION:The third symposium in the Africa Institute’s four-part Colorful Threads season – co-organized by Prita Meier\, Associate Professor of Art History at NYU\, and Laura Fair\, Professor of African History at Columbia University – considers the momentous cultural interactions and microeconomies of exchange among the Eastern African coastline and the islands of the western Indian Ocean; we have come to understand that these places were also important sites for creativity and imagination. \nFrom the rich artistic traditions of music\, photography\, theatre\, dance\, ritual life\, and spirit possession performances (to mention only a few examples)\, this symposium aims to decipher the fine print of an intricately interwoven oceanic tapestry. The focus on aesthetic sensibilities and cultural logic will necessarily engage questions of power\, representation\, production\, consumption\, and “the systems of signification emerging from a panoply of cultural forms and consciousnesses”. \nThis forum will bring scholars from various academic disciplines and geographical locations to ponder both symbolic and cultural capital.
