DESCRIPTION:An evening with one of the contemporary stars of the piano. Garlanded with accolades yet still only in her mid 30s\, Khatia Buniatishvili brings passion and vulnerability to her performances; she acknowledges that the folk music of native Georgia has greatly influenced her musicality\, and that is probably reflected in her warm\, sometimes sorrowful playing. “The piano is the blackest instrument\,” she says\, a “symbol of musical solitude”\, which even a pianist must become accustomed to. “I have to be psychologically strong and forget the hall if I want to share it with the audience.” \nHer recital should bring out the best in her\, from the melancholy lyricism of the Satie to a virtuoso climax in the energetic toe-tapping rhythms of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No.2. \nThis is a rare and highly recommended opportunity. And she’ll be playing the Dubai Opera Edition by Steinway & Sons\, one of the piano maker’s exclusive productions for specific international concert halls. DESCRIPTION:This is the gala opening performance for the Global Notes Series from Dubai Opera in collaboration with Encore Performing Arts. Global Notes is a new recital/concert programme “dedicated to celebrating the vibrant tapestry of cultural diversity and supporting young musicians from around the world”; we think in essence this means an opportunity to hear some excellent musicians in a relatively intimate setting\, though the phrase “gala opening” suggests it won’t be exactly informal … The ticket price includes a drink\, incidentally. \nLinus Roth\, who plays the 1703 Dancla Stradivarius on loan from Landesbank Baden-Württemberg\, is noted for his stylistic knowledge (as well as his performances as a soloist and chamber musician he is also an academic teacher of music and has been artistic director of music festivals) and his charismatic personality. For Linus’s Dubai debut we’re promised a programme of pieces from Brahms to Bartók that highlight his virtuosity and dynamic musicality. \nAccompanying him is one of the most sought-after collaborative pianists of his generation.\, Boris Kusnezow.

DESCRIPTION:A piano recital in SAMIT Group’s VIP Classical series presented as two halves: the Polish pianist Julia Kociuban starts with Chopin\, the Ballade No.3 Op.47 followed by Mazurkas\, Op.24; the three Polonaises Op.71; and finally the Andante spianato et grande polonaise brillante in E-flat major\, Op. 22. After the interval we have the  Canadian pianist Sanaz Sotoudeh with Busoni’s arrangement of Bach’s Chaconne in D minor; Beethoven’s hugely popular Moonlight Sonata\, the Piano Sonata No. 4; Liszt’s Liebesträume No.3; Liszt’s arrangement of Schubert’s Ständchen; and finally Liszt’s Étude en Douze Exercices No.3. (We checked: there is no misprint on the ticket price.)

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Classics 2023: Yo-Yo Ma & Kathryn Stott
DESCRIPTION:The celebrated cellist is accompanied on piano by his long-time friend and collaborator Kathryn Stott. We don’t know what the programme will be\, but their pandemic album Songs of Comfort and Hope had 21 tracks ranging across modern arrangements of traditional folk tunes\, canonical pop songs\, jazz standards\, and mainstays from the western classical repertoire. That could make for a promising evening; Yo-Yo Ma’s current obsession though is Our Common Nature\, “a celebration of the ways nature can reinvigorate the human experiment\, reuniting us in pursuit of a common future …” It’s a broad and searching initiative that explores ways in which we can heal\, and enrich\, our relationship with the world around us\, typically being realised as left-field collaborations and on-site explorations that may well inform this concert. Prices start at a very reasonable level.
