SUMMARY:Youness Atbane: Untitled 14km
DESCRIPTION:The UAE premiere of a multidisciplinary work by the Moroccan artist Youness Atbane that combines dance theatre\, performance\, and installation in a satirical examination of how contemporary art engages with questions of identity – particularly what is framed as “Arab identity”. \nAtbane constructs an imagined exhibition at the fictional Museum of North Africa\, Middle East Contemporary Art. Within this setting\, an Arab-Andalusian poet\, a museum director\, a curator\, and a contemporary artist attempt to conceive an exhibition that re-examines modernism through two parallel lenses: the poetic legacy of the Arab-Andalusian era and the work of established contemporary Arab artists. \nTheir exchanges reveal the negotiations\, frictions\, and power dynamics involved in translating historical narratives into contemporary artistic frameworks. Through this constructed situation\, Untitled 14km questions legitimacy\, authority\, and representation within the global art system\, considering how identity is shaped through discourse\, competition\, and institutional validation\, contributing to a sharply witty examination of Orientalism in the arts. \nThere’s a second performance tomorrow (2 October).

SUMMARY:Mohamed Toukabri: Every-Body-Knows-What-Tomorrow-Brings-And-We-All-Know-What-Happened-Yesterday
DESCRIPTION:Known for his ability to navigate between different worlds – street and stage\, hip-hop and postmodernism\, personal and political – Mohamed Toukabri has a new solo work where movement becomes both excavation and rebellion.  Says SAF: “This piece pulses with the urgency of decolonising the imagination\, carving out a space where dance traditions do not compete but converse\, where forms long dismissed as ‘low’ hold their own against the canonised … The title is both a provocation and a reminder that the weight of history moves with us. What responsibility do we carry in what we pass on\, in what we erase or uphold?” \nThis is part of the fifth edition of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s season of curated performances that serve as an engaging space for exploring\, remembering and imagining – “treating the body as a site of artistic inquiry\, the programme shifts fluidly between intimate reflection and collective experience”.

SUMMARY:Maktaba: Performance as is\, Performing with Yoonsik Chico Park
DESCRIPTION:Maktaba is 421’s monthly gathering dedicated to collective reading\, viewing\, and discussion across disciplines. This session moves from thinking about performance to thinking through it – using the body\, space\, gesture\, and relationality as sites for inquiry. \nThrough a combination of discussion\, readings\, and performance-based activities\, participants will move between theory and practice\, translate ideas into gestures\, actions\, scores\, interactions\, and durational exercises\, as well as explore how meaning is created through the act of performing. The seminar will culminate in a series of shared exercises that invite participants to leave their mark through performance while reflecting on what performance can reveal\, disrupt\, or make possible within our social and cultural contexts. \nLunch will be provided.

SUMMARY:Mallika Taneja: Do You Know This Song?
DESCRIPTION:Surrounded by toys and objects from her childhood\, Mallika Taneja uses a harmonium and a microphone to look for what she has lost – a singer and her songs. As she moves between this tale of searching\, singing and grief\, Taneja invites the audience to travel with her through song. \nThis is part of the fifth edition of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s season of curated performances that serve as an engaging space for exploring\, remembering and imagining – “treating the body as a site of artistic inquiry\, the programme shifts fluidly between intimate reflection and collective experience”.

SUMMARY:Maria Hassabi: Us
DESCRIPTION:A 6m bench along the front edge of the stage compresses the space into a narrow\, linear runway. Five dancers trace this boundary through a sequence of calculated tableaus\, their bodies caught between rest and anticipation. The bench acts as a structural pivot\, serving simultaneously as physical support and a choreographic frame. Facing the audience directly\, the cast establishes a shared field of attention. Both individually and as an ensemble\, as well as among themselves and with the viewers\, the dancers navigate presence in real time. The performance unfolds within this shared alignment\, fostering a quiet exchange of attention and perception.
