DESCRIPTION:The second weekend of performances for “the most exciting musical of its generation” (The Times). \nFirst seen in 1975 and still an all-round stunner\, it is based on a 1926 play by one-time reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins and is built around actual crimes on which she reported; the book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse paints a tantalising tale of passion\, murder\, greed\, betrayal\, and redemption through the journey of two fiercely competitive women – aspiring jazz performer Roxie Hart and former vaudevillian (and double-murderess) Velma Kelly. John Kander and Fred Ebb were responsible for the score\, with each song modelled on a traditional vaudeville number or a vaudeville performer – a format that helped to make explicit the show’s comparison between justice\, showbiz\, and contemporary society. \nPerformances: \n19 September 7pm\n20 September 7pm\n21 September 1pm\n21 September 7pm\n22 September 1pm\n22 September 6pm \nThere are the door-open times; we’d guess the actual performances start an hour later.
